Thyroid hormone manipulation influences development of endothermy and hatching in white leghorn chickens (Gallus gallus)

Data collected on metabolic rates, body temperatures, morphology, plasma T3, and hatching of developing chicken embryos and hatchlings. To understand the role thyroid hormones play in hatch timing and development of thermogenic capacity and metabolic rate plasma thyroid hormone levels were manipulated in chicken embryos beginning at 80% development (day 17 of a 21-day incubation) with either a single dose of triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) or the thyroperoxidase inhibitor methimazole (MMI).

Examining the Viability of the use of Sarocladium zeae as a Biocontrol Agent in the Agricultural Production of Maize (open access)

Examining the Viability of the use of Sarocladium zeae as a Biocontrol Agent in the Agricultural Production of Maize

Data management plan for the grant, "Examining the Viability of the use of Sarocladium zeae as a Biocontrol Agent in the Agricultural Production of Maize." Sarocladium zeae is a fungus that naturally grows within corn and produces pyrrocidines, compounds that inhibit the production of two exogenous threats to maize, aflatoxins and fumonisins. This project aims to identify other natural products that may be produced by S. zeae through genetic modification in native and non-native fungal hosts to ensure there are no toxins present. In doing so, further information will be gathered about the possibility of using S. zeae as a targeted biocontrol agent that protects against exogenous threats while remaining safe for consumption.

Structural and mechanistic studies of oxalate catabolism (open access)

Structural and mechanistic studies of oxalate catabolism

Data management plan for the grant, "Structural and mechanistic studies of oxalate catabolism." Biologically derived oxalic acid has been shown to have a negative impact on crop production and human health. Oxalate present in plant foods can decrease their nutritional value by binding to calcium and rendering that calcium unavailable for nutritional absorption. This project will study the structure and function of key enzymes in oxalate turnover to understand their biological functions and mechanisms, facilitating metabolic engineering of plants toward improving nutritional quality and production of plant derived foods.

Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics (open access)

Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics

Data management plan for the grant, "Approximation Theory and Complex Dynamics." This project involves the study of approximation theory in the setting of complex functions, with applications to complex dynamics. Approximation theory seeks to understand the extent to which the behavior of a general function can be effectively modeled by that of functions drawn from a more restricted class. Efficient approximation of functions is of relevance for numerical calculation. Since the only calculations that can be carried out numerically are the elementary operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, in practical terms it is of importance to understand when the values of general functions are well approximated by the values of either polynomial or rational functions. In many situations, the values of the approximant resemble those of the general function only for a sampling of input values. What can be said about values of the approximant for other choices of input? This is the main question studied in this project, with the following application in mind: when a general function is iterated to produce a dynamical system, to what extent does the dynamical behavior of an approximant resemble the dynamical behavior of the original function? The project will also contribute …

Reduced reflectance and altered color: The potential cost of external particulate matter accumulation on urban Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) feathers

Authors of the article state that airborne particulate matter (PM) can accumulate on feather surfaces and alter feather appearance, so they quantified PM accumulation on Rock Pigeon feathers and analyzed the spectral properties of extracted particulates. Their findings suggest that wild birds could incur an urban pollution penalty as PM accumulation has the potential to alter feather properties.

Evolutionary models of lateralization: Steps toward stigmergy?

Article discusses an interesting approach to accounting for brain and behavioral asymmetry based on competition and cooperation in phenotypically asymmetric individuals. The model in question shows, in an almost fully analytical way, that under proper conditions, there exists an unequal number of equilibrium of left-and right-lateralized individuals.

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age)

Authors of the article sought to examine the effectiveness of an acute prolonged exercise session on post-exercise executive function in physically active adults and to assess if age or pre-exercise cognitive performance was predictive of the magnitude of change in executive task performance. Their results support the effectiveness of a single prolonged exercise bout to augment executive function in physically active adults, irrespective of age.

Role of heterophase interfaces on local coercivity mechanisms in the magnetic Al0.3CoFeNi complex concentrated alloy (open access)

Role of heterophase interfaces on local coercivity mechanisms in the magnetic Al0.3CoFeNi complex concentrated alloy

Article describes how authors use state-of-the-art electron microscopy techniques to show that the magnetization reversal process in an Al0.3CoFeNi magnetic complex concentrated alloy (CCA), which is responsible for its coercivity, changes dramatically from a nucleation-type mechanism in the FCC+L12 state of the CCA. Their work reveals that heterophase FCC/BCC interfaces have a much stronger effect on coercivity than isostructural chemically ordered/disordered interfaces and provides a powerful guide to the rational design of microstructure to tune magnetic properties in both complex concentrated alloys and conventional magnetic alloys.

Insights into the Bioinformatics and Transcriptional Analysis of the Elongator Complexes (ELPs) Gene Family of Wheat: TaELPs Contribute to Wheat Abiotic Stress Tolerance and Leaf Senescence

Article states that elongator complexes (ELPs) are the protein complexes that promote transcription through histone acetylation in eukaryotic cells and interact with elongating RNA polymerase II. ELPs’ role in plant growth and development, signal transduction, and response to biotic and abiotic stresses have been confirmed in model plants, but the functions of the wheat ELP genes are not well documented. The present study identified 18 members of the ELPs from the wheat genome with a homology search.

The aim of their study is to present step-by-step instructions for fabricating an aeroponic system, also called a “caisson,” that has been in use in several legume research labs studying the development of symbiotic nitrogen fixing nodules, but for which detailed directions are not currently available.

POSMM: an efficient alignment-free metagenomic profiler that complements alignment-based profiling

Article presents POSMM, Python-Optimized Standard Markov Model classifier, which is a new incarnation of the Markov model approach to metagenomic sequence analysis. The authors claim that by combining POSMM with ultrafast classifiers such as Kraken2, their complementary strengths can be leveraged to produce higher overall accuracy in metagenomic sequence classification than by either as a standalone classifier. POSMM is a user-friendly and highly adaptable tool designed for broad use by the metagenome scientific community.

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls (open access)

FERONIA and wall-associated kinases coordinate defense induced by lignin modification in plant cell walls

Article discusses authors' findings that through genetic screening for suppressors of defense gene induction in the low lignin ccr1-3 mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana, we found that loss of function of the receptor-like kinase FERONIA, although not restoring growth, affected cell wall remodeling and blocked release of elicitor-active pectic polysaccharides as a result of the ccr1-3 mutation. They determine that engineering plant cell walls will require development of ways to bypass endogenous pectin signaling pathways.
