Hypoxic level and duration differentially affect embryonic organ system development of the chicken (Gallus gallus) (open access)

Hypoxic level and duration differentially affect embryonic organ system development of the chicken (Gallus gallus)

This article investigates how key organ systems are affected by hypoxia. The results indicated that either modest hypoxia (15% O2) throughout development, or hypoxia at any level during the late stages (d 11 to 18), increased the heart and chorioallantoic membrane weight, which partly compensated for the detrimental effects of hypoxia on embryonic development.

A gene based approach to test genetic association based on an optimally weighted combination of multiple traits (open access)

A gene based approach to test genetic association based on an optimally weighted combination of multiple traits

In this article, the authors propose a statistical method by Testing an Optimally Weighted Combination of Multiple traits (TOW-CM) to test the association between multiple traits and multiple variants in a genomic region (a gene or pathway). They investigate the performance of the proposed method through extensive simulation studies. Their simulation studies show that the proposed method has correct type I error rates and is either the most powerful test or comparable with the most powerful tests. Additionally, they illustrate the usefulness of TOW-CM based on a COPDGene study.

UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃) (open access)

UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃)

This article investigates maleic anhydride (C₂H₂(CO)₂O, Furan-2,5-dione) that is emitted into or formed in the atmosphere during bio-mass burning events as well as being a photochemical degradation product of some aromatic volatile organic compounds. The photochemical fate of maleic anhydride, however, is presently not well enough characterized to enable modeling of its impact on the environment and human health. In this study, the room temperature UV and infrared absorption spectra of maleic anhydride were measured and quantified using several complementary calibration methods.

Artificially structured boundary plasma trap

This article presents a computer simulation of single-species non-neutral plasma confinement using an artificially structured boundary. The Arabidopsis PAD4 Lipase-Like Domain Is Sufficient for Resistance to Green Peach Aphid (open access)

The Arabidopsis PAD4 Lipase-Like Domain Is Sufficient for Resistance to Green Peach Aphid

Article exploring PAD4 functions in plant defense by expressing the N-terminal PAD4 lipase-like domain (PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ) without its C-terminal EDS1-PAD4 (EP) domain. The authors show that transgenic expression of PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ in Arabidopsis is sufficient for limiting GPA infestation but not for conferring basal and effector-triggered pathogen immunity. This suggests that the C-terminal PAD4 EP domain is necessary for EDS1-dependent immune functions but is dispensable for aphid resistance. Moreover, PAD4ᴸᴸᴰ is not sufficient to interact with EDS1, indicating the PAD4-EP domain is required for stable heterodimerization. These data provide molecular evidence that PAD4 has domain-specific functions.

Influence of coherent population trapping on Raman scattering (open access)

Influence of coherent population trapping on Raman scattering

Article considering the Raman scattering in molecular media. Applying two laser fields in a two-photon resonance with vibrational transition, the authors study the role of rotational levels for excitation of vibrational coherence. It is shown that the molecular vibrational coherence strongly depends on the effect of coherent population trapping for rotational levels. The obtained results are important for applications of Raman spectroscopy to molecular detection in engineering, chemical, and biological applications.

Persistent spin helix in Rashba-Dresselhaus ferroelectric CsBiNb2O7 (open access)

Persistent spin helix in Rashba-Dresselhaus ferroelectric CsBiNb2O7

Article reporting that CsBiNb₂O₇, a layered perovskite of Dion-Jacobson type, is a robust ferroelectric with sufficiently strong spin-orbit coupling and spin texture reversible by electric field. The study reveals that its topmost valence band's spin texture is quasi-independent from the momentum, as a result of the low symmetry of its ferroelectric phase. The peculiar spin-polarization pattern in the momentum space may yield the so-called “persistent spin helix,” a specific spin-wave mode which protects the spin from decoherence in the diffusive transport regime, potentially ensuring a very long spin lifetime in this material.
