Acoustic Metasurface-Aided Broadband Noise Reduction in Automobile Induced by Tire-Pavement Interaction (open access)

Acoustic Metasurface-Aided Broadband Noise Reduction in Automobile Induced by Tire-Pavement Interaction

Article demonstrating a technique utilizing acoustic metasurfaces (AMSes) with high reflective characteristics using relatively lightweight materials for noise reduction without any change in mechanical strength or weight of the tire. The proposed design can significantly reduce the noise arising from tire–pavement interaction over a broadband of acoustic frequencies under 1000 Hz and over a wide range of vehicle speeds using a negative effective dynamic mass density approach.

Rapid embryonic accretion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the brain of an altricial bird with an aquatic-based maternal diet

This article communicates the results of a study conducted on red-winged blackbirds where brain phospholipid composition during development was measured and diet was manipulated. The dietary study confirmed that nestling brains are sensitive to fatty acid supply. The findings of this article suggest that Red-winged blackbirds may be able to advance cognitive development relative to other altricial species owing to their aquatic maternal diet.

Remodeling the epigenome and (epi)cytoskeleton: a new paradigm for co-regulation by methylation

This article is a commentary on coordinated use of methyl marks to remodel both the epigenome and the (epi)cytoskeleton, which opens the possibility for integrated regulation (referred to as ‘epiregulation’) of other higher-level functions, such as muscle contraction or learning and memory, and could even have evolutionary implications.

UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃) (open access)

UV and infrared absorption spectra and 248 nm photolysis of maleic anhydride (C₄H₂O₃)

This article investigates maleic anhydride (Câ‚‚Hâ‚‚(CO)â‚‚O, Furan-2,5-dione) that is emitted into or formed in the atmosphere during bio-mass burning events as well as being a photochemical degradation product of some aromatic volatile organic compounds. The photochemical fate of maleic anhydride, however, is presently not well enough characterized to enable modeling of its impact on the environment and human health. In this study, the room temperature UV and infrared absorption spectra of maleic anhydride were measured and quantified using several complementary calibration methods.

Scaling of axial muscle architecture in juvenile Alligator mississippiensis reveals an enhanced performance capacity of accessory breathing mechanisms

Article describing the anatomy of the trunk muscles, their properties that determine muscle performance (mass, length and physiological cross-sectional area [PCSA]) and investigating their scaling in juvenile Alligator mississippiensis spanning an order of magnitude in body mass (359 g–5.5 kg). Findings support existing anecdotal evidence that crocodilians shift their breathing mechanics as they increase in size.

Temperature-sensitive Post-translational Regulation of Plant Omega-3 Fatty-acid Desaturases Is Mediated by the Endoplasmic Reticulum-associated Degradation Pathway (open access)

Temperature-sensitive Post-translational Regulation of Plant Omega-3 Fatty-acid Desaturases Is Mediated by the Endoplasmic Reticulum-associated Degradation Pathway

Article expressing two closely related plant FAD3 genes in yeast cells and found that their enzymes produced significantly different amounts of omega-3 fatty acids and that these differences correlated to differences in rates of protein turnover. The findings indicate that Fad3 protein abundance is regulated by a combination of cis-acting degradation signals and the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and that modulation of Fad3 protein amounts in response to temperature may represent one mechanism of homeoviscous adaptation in plants.

Altitudinal gradients in Magellanic sub-Antarctic lagoons: the effect of elevation on freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity and distribution (open access)

Altitudinal gradients in Magellanic sub-Antarctic lagoons: the effect of elevation on freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity and distribution

In this article, freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity associated with lakes and ponds along the altitudinal gradient of a Magellanic sub-Antarctic watershed are assessed. A monotonic decline in species richness was observed with increasing elevation, with simpler and more even community composition at higher altitude. This pattern differs from the mid-peak trend found in streams of the same watershed. Functional feeding group structure also diminished with increasing elevation.
