Does the left aorta provide proton-rich blood to the gut when crocodilians digest a meal?
Article measuring blood parameters in the left aortae and atria of crocodilians. The findings do not support the hypothesis that a R–L shunt serves to deliver CO2 for the gastrointestinal system after feeding in crocodilians.

Using uncertainty quantification and machine learning techniques to study the evolution of odor capture
Data management plan for the research grant, "Using uncertainty quantification and machine learning techniques to study the evolution of odor capture." This research proposes the application of uncertainty quantification (UQ) and machine learning (ML) to a CFD model of odor capture to understand the role of hair-array morphology, kinematics, and fluid environment in odor capture. The combination of CFD modeling and UQ&ML techniques can map out the performance space under which these chemosensory hair arrays operate and the relative sensitivity of each parameter of odor capture to construct a global, quantitative understanding of how parameters control odor-capture performance. Furthermore, this analysis can eliminate parameters that have no influence on odor capture, extracting the root principles of odor capture and providing a more efficient way to construct bioinspired devices for chemical detection. This work is of interest to the Army for extracting design principles that can be used for biomimetic and/or bioinspired devices for sensing hazardous chemicals in the environment (e.g. explosives).

Lipoxygenase-mediated Oxidation of Polyunsaturated N-Acylethanolamines in Arabidopsis
Article hypothesizing that lipoxygenase (LOX) participated in the metabolism of PU-NAEs through the formation of NAE-oxylipins. The data suggests that Arabidopsis LOXs indeed compete with FAAH to metabolize PU-NAEs during seedling establishment. Identification of endogenous amide-conjugated oxylipins suggests potential significance of these metabolites in vivo, and FAAH mutants may offer opportunities to address this in the future.

The Transcriptional Co-activator MBF1c Is a Key Regulator of Thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana
Article reporting that the highly conserved transcriptional co-activator, MBF1c (multiprotein bridging factor 1c), is a key regulator of thermotolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana. Results provide evidence for the existence of a tightly coordinated heat stress-response network, involving trehalose-, SA-, and ethylene-signaling pathways, that is under the control of MBF1c.

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules
This article shows that that the coordinated read-write activity of the epigenetic machinery extends to the cytoskeleton, with PBRM1 in the PBAF chromatin remodeling complex reading microtubule methyl marks written by the SETD2 histone methyltransferase. This article opens a previously unknown window into how chromatin remodeler defects can drive disease via both epigenetic and cytoskeletal dysfunction.

Targeted Metabolic Profiles of the Leaves and Xylem Sap of Two Sugarcane Genotypes Infected with the Vascular Bacterial Pathogen Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli
This article identifies discriminant metabolites between a resistant (R) and a susceptible (S) sugarcane variety at the early stages of pathogen colonization (30 and 120 days after inoculation—DAI) by untargeted and targeted metabolomics of leaves and xylem sap using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The data represent a valuable resource of potential biomarkers for metabolite-assisted selection of resistant varieties to RS.

Discovery of higher-order topological insulators using the spin Hall conductivity as a topology signature
This article shows a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding modeling. The model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity (SHC) emerges within the HOTI phase. This work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.
