Biocultural Calendars Across Four Ethnolinguistic Communities in Southwestern South America (open access)

Biocultural Calendars Across Four Ethnolinguistic Communities in Southwestern South America

Article describes how, since the mid-20th century, the so-called Great Acceleration has amplified processes of ecosystem degradation, extinction of biological species, displacement of local peoples, losses of languages, and cultural diversity. The authors examine cultural practices and socio-environmental changes across four contrasting ethnolinguistic communities in southwestern South America, from southern to northern Chile along a marked climatic gradient to show the broad application of the concept of biocultural calendars.

Dynamic Motions of Topological Defects in Nematic Liquid Crystals under Spatial Confinement (open access)

Dynamic Motions of Topological Defects in Nematic Liquid Crystals under Spatial Confinement

Article discusses how topological defects (TDs) have become a sensational topic due to their significant influence on the unusual optical and physiochemical characteristics of the material. Here, authors assert how nematic liquid crystals confined in a cell exhibiting surfaces with periodic anchoring conditions containing surface topography are relied on.

Shedding New Light on Weak Emission-Line Quasars in the CIV-Hβ Parameter Space (open access)

Shedding New Light on Weak Emission-Line Quasars in the CIV-Hβ Parameter Space

Article describes how weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are a subset of Type 1 quasars that exhibit extremely weak Lyα+N V λ1240 and/or C IV λ1549 emission lines. The authors investigate the relationship between emission-line properties and accretion rate for a sample of 230 `ordinary' Type 1 quasars and 18 WLQs at z<0.5 and 1.5<z<3.5 that have rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectral measurements.

Thyroid hormone manipulation influences development of endothermy and hatching in white leghorn chickens (Gallus gallus)

Data collected on metabolic rates, body temperatures, morphology, plasma T3, and hatching of developing chicken embryos and hatchlings. To understand the role thyroid hormones play in hatch timing and development of thermogenic capacity and metabolic rate plasma thyroid hormone levels were manipulated in chicken embryos beginning at 80% development (day 17 of a 21-day incubation) with either a single dose of triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) or the thyroperoxidase inhibitor methimazole (MMI).

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists (open access)

Exposure to diesel exhaust particulates and desert sand dust generates microvesicle particles and platelet-activating factor agonists

The authors address the editor in their article, stating that the majority of the general population, particularly, servicemen and women deployed across the globe are exposed to various airborne hazards, including diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) and desert sand dust (DSD). Studies, including the author's study, have shown that exposure to ROS-generating pro-oxidative stressors ranging from environmental carcinogens to pollutants, including cigarette smoke, produces a class of potent phospholipid mediators, Platelet-activating factor (PAF) and PAF-like agonists via oxidative cleavage of lipid membrane glycerophosphocholines (GPCs).

Molecular Simulation Strategies for Understanding the Degradation Mechanisms of Acrylic Polymers (open access)

Molecular Simulation Strategies for Understanding the Degradation Mechanisms of Acrylic Polymers

Article describes how acrylic polymers, commonly used in paints, can degrade over time by several different chemical and physical mechanisms, depending on structure and exposure conditions. In this work, the authors studied the effects of different degradation mechanisms and agents on properties of acrylic polymers found in artists’ acrylic paints for the first time using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations.

A Remarkable Difference in Pharmacokinetics of Fluorinated Versus Iodinated Photosensitizers Derived from Chlorophyll-a and a Direct Correlation between the Tumor Uptake and Anti-Cancer Activity (open access)

A Remarkable Difference in Pharmacokinetics of Fluorinated Versus Iodinated Photosensitizers Derived from Chlorophyll-a and a Direct Correlation between the Tumor Uptake and Anti-Cancer Activity

Article says that to investigate and compare the pharmacokinetic profile and anti-cancer activity of fluorinated and iodinated photosensitizers (PSs), the 3-(1′-(o-fluorobenzyloxy)ethyl pyropheophorbide and the corresponding meta-(m-) and para (p-) fluorinated analogs (methyl esters and carboxylic acids) were synthesized. According to the authors, the nature of the delivery vehicle and tumor types showed a significant difference in uptake and long-term cure by photodynamic therapy (PDT), especially in the iodinated PS.

A multiscale approach reveals elaborate circulatory system and intermittent heartbeat in velvet worms (Onychophora)

Article describes how an antagonistic hemolymph-muscular system is essential for soft-bodied invertebrates. The authors analyzed the entire circulatory system of the peripatopsid Euperipatoides rowelli and claimed they discovered a surprisingly elaborate organization.
