Collaborative Research: LTREB Renewal - River ecosystem responses to floodplain restoration
Data management plan for the grant, "Collaborative Research: LTREB Renewal - River ecosystem responses to floodplain restoration." This project centers on researching the metabolic transformations of the metal-contaminated Upper Clark Fork River in western Montana, USA, that are shifting with environmental restoration efforts. Specifically, the work conducted at UNT includes dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemical characterization of river samples along a 200 km transect from the Upper Clark Fork River, metal concentration analysis, and short-term incubation experiments on the river water (30 days of microbial processes) using multiple analytical chemistry techniques such as absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic absorption spectroscopy or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Data will be analyzed to identify chemical and biological signals of restoration and assess ecosystem health.

Dry blood spot samples to monitor immune-associated mRNA expression in intervention studies: Impact of Baker's yeast beta glucan
Article describes how monitoring immunological response to physical stressors in a field setting is challenging because existing methods require a laboratory visit and traditional blood collection via venipuncture. The purpose of this study was to determine if our optimized dry blood spot (DBS) methodology yields sufficient total RNA to quantify the effect of Baker's Yeast Beta Glucan supplementation on post-exercise mRNA expression.

Manipulating microRNA miR408 enhances both biomass yield and saccharification efficiency in poplar
Article describes how the conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks to fermentable sugar for biofuel production is inefficient, and most strategies to enhance efficiency directly target lignin biosynthesis, with associated negative growth impacts. The authors demonstrate, for both laboratory-and field-grown plants, that expression of Pag-miR408 in poplar significantly enhances saccharification, with no requirement for acid-pretreatment, while promoting plant growth.

Systematic approaches to C-lignin engineering in Medicago truncatula
Article describes how C-lignin is a homopolymer of caffeyl alcohol present in the seed coats of a variety of plant species including vanilla orchid, various cacti, and the ornamental plant Cleome hassleriana. Silicon supply promotes differences in growth and C:N:P stoichiometry between bamboo and tree saplings

Using Machine Learning to Predict Genes Underlying Differentiation of Multipartite and Unipartite Traits in Bacteria
Article describes how, since the discovery of the second chromosome in the Rhodobacter spaeroides 2.4.1 in 1989 and the revelation of gene sequences, multipartite genomes have been reported in over three hundred bacterial species under nine different phyla. DNA metabarcoding captures different macroinvertebrate biodiversity than morphological identification approaches across a continental scale

A Highly Contiguous and Annotated Genome Assembly of the Lesser Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus pallidicinctus)

Using CRISPR/Cas to enhance gene expression for crop trait improvement by editing miRNA targets
Article states that gene editing tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 are often thought of as a means to prevent gene expression; however, a more subtle and yet powerful approach is the enhancement of gene expression by precise deletion of repressor sites within a gene of interest. Authors argue that gene editing of miRNA target sites is preferable over deletion of the miRNA genes themselves, given that it avoids the pitfalls of unspecific derepression of miRNA target(s) beyond the gene of interest.
