Loss of Migratory Traditions Makes the Endangered Patagonian Huemul Deer a Year-Round Refugee in Its Summer Habitat

This article analyzes the historical spatiotemporal behavior of the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), an endangered deer endemic to Patagonia. Losing migratory traditions is a major threat, and may explain their presently prevalent skeletal diseases, reduced longevity, and lacking recolonizations for most remaining huemul subpopulations.

Crucial Development: Criticality Is Important to Cell-to-Cell Communication and Information Transfer in Living Systems (open access)

Crucial Development: Criticality Is Important to Cell-to-Cell Communication and Information Transfer in Living Systems

This article is the fourth paper of the Special Issue Memory and Criticality. It bridges the the theoretical debate on the role of memory and criticality discussed in the three earlier manuscripts, with a review of key concepts in biology and focus on cell-to-cell communication in organismal development. The authors suggest that in conjunction with morphogenetic gradients, there exist gradients of information transfer creating cybernetic loops of stability and disorder, setting the stage for adaptive capability. Criticality, therefore, appears to be an important factor in the transmission, transfer and coding of information for complex adaptive system development.

Replicate DNA metabarcoding can discriminate seasonal and spatial abundance shifts in river macroinvertebrate assemblages (open access)

Replicate DNA metabarcoding can discriminate seasonal and spatial abundance shifts in river macroinvertebrate assemblages

Article asserts that the delivery of consistent and accurate fine-resolution data on biodiversity using metabarcoding promises to improve environmental assessment and research. The authors propose a novel hierarchical approach to recovering abundance information from metabarcoding, and demonstrate this technique using benthic macroinvertebrates.

Stereochemical and Biosynthetic Rationalisation of the Tropolone Sesquiterpenoids (open access)

Stereochemical and Biosynthetic Rationalisation of the Tropolone Sesquiterpenoids

Article summarises the known structures, biological activities, and biosynthetic pathways of the tropolone sesquiterpenoid family of fungal secondary metabolites. Synthesis of this knowledge allows likely structural and stereochemical misassignments to be revised and shows how the compounds can be divided into three main biosynthetic classes based on the stereochemistry of key biosynthetic steps.

Green synthesis of olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks for hydrogen fuel cell applications (open access)

Green synthesis of olefin-linked covalent organic frameworks for hydrogen fuel cell applications

This article creates a green strategy to fabricate a highly crystalline olefin-linked pyrazine-based covalent organic framework (COF) with high robustness and porosity under solvent-free conditions. This study opens up new possibilities for the green synthesis of advanced materials and provides important guidance for the rational design and synthesis of polymeric materials for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell applications.

Enhanced Photoluminescence and Prolonged Carrier Lifetime through Laser Radiation Hardening and Self-Healing in Aged MAPbBr3 Perovskites Encapsulated in NiO Nanotubes (open access)

Enhanced Photoluminescence and Prolonged Carrier Lifetime through Laser Radiation Hardening and Self-Healing in Aged MAPbBr3 Perovskites Encapsulated in NiO Nanotubes

Article describes how organic-inorganic perovskites hold great promise as optoelectronic semiconductors for pure color light emitting and photovoltaic devices. This paper investigates the laser radiation hardening and self-healing-induced properties of aged MAPbBr3 perovskites encapsulated in NiO nanotubes (MAPbBr3@NiO) using photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM). After deliberately subjecting the MAPbBr3@ NiO to atmospheric conditions for two years, the sample remains remarkably stable.

Differential effects of soil conservation practices on arthropods and crop yields (open access)

Differential effects of soil conservation practices on arthropods and crop yields

Article describes how many agricultural management tactics, such as reduced tillage, aim to promote biodiversity and ecosystem services. Authors assessed how soil tillage and landscape context affected arthropod biodiversity and crop yield in canola crop fields.

Effect of Cu and Ni Inclusion on Tribological Performance of Tribocatalytically Active Coatings in Hydrocarbon Environments (open access)

Effect of Cu and Ni Inclusion on Tribological Performance of Tribocatalytically Active Coatings in Hydrocarbon Environments

Article describes how protective coatings are important for enhancing tribological behavior, preventing surface degradation, and reducing friction-induced energy losses during the operation of mechanical systems. The authors study the effect of catalytic metals, specifically their compositions and amount, on the tribocatalysis process.
