Migratory movements of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica naumanni from high Arctic Greenland
This article is the first to present data on the migratory movements of the “large-billed” subspecies, F. a. naumanni, that breeds in the high Arctic and which has significantly larger body size than those farther south.

The Long-Term Effects of Developmental Hypoxia on Cardiac Mitochondrial Function in Snapping Turtles
This article investigates the long-term effects of developmental hypoxia on mitochondrial function in a species that regularly encounters hypoxia during development. Findings speculate that adjustments might improve mitochondrial hypoxia tolerance, which would be beneficial for turtles during breath-hold diving and overwintering in anoxic environments.

A multiscale approach reveals elaborate circulatory system and intermittent heartbeat in velvet worms (Onychophora)
Article describes how an antagonistic hemolymph-muscular system is essential for soft-bodied invertebrates. The authors analyzed the entire circulatory system of the peripatopsid Euperipatoides rowelli and claimed they discovered a surprisingly elaborate organization.

An “ideal lignin” facilitates full biomass utilization
This article describes the ideal nature of the Catechyl lignin (C-lignin) via a revised compositional characterization of the vanilla seed coat fiber, new features of the C-lignin's reactivity and stability, and successful attempts at converting it to monomers in near-quantitative yields.

Prebiotic/probiotic supplementation resulted in reduced visceral fat and mRNA expression associated with adipose tissue inflammation, systemic inflammation, and chronic disease risk
Article describes how prebiotic/probiotic supplementation represents a viable option for addressing elevated systemic inflammation and chronic disease risk in overweight individuals. The key findings support that 90-day prebiotic/probiotic supplementation may be associated with reduced adipose tissue inflammation, reduced systemic inflammation, and reduced chronic disease risk.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺-ATPase (SERCA) activity during the transition to endothermy in an altricial bird
Article describes SERCA activity in the pectoralis muscle and heart ventricle of red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nestlings, fledglings and adults. Additionally, using a diet manipulation, the authors tested the hypothesis that muscle SERCA activity is affected by dietary fatty acid composition, as has been shown in some previous studies.

Crowdsourcing biocuration: the Community Assessment of Community 1 Annotation with Ontologies (CACAO)
Article describing an approach to expand biocuration through crowdsourcing with undergraduates in the community-oriented wiki framework for GO annotation called the Gene Ontology Normal Usage Tracking System (GONUTS). This multiplies the number of high-quality annotations in international databases, enriches the coverage of the literature on normal gene function, and pushes the field in new directions.

Multi-omic characterization of bifunctional peroxidase 4-coumarate 3-hydroxylase knockdown in Brachypodium distachyon provides insights into lignin modification associated pleiotropic effects
Article discusses how a bifunctional peroxidase enzyme, 4-coumarate 3-hydroxylase (C3H/APX), provides a parallel route to the shikimate shunt pathway for the conversion of 4-coumarate to caffeate in the early steps of lignin biosynthesis. Here, a multi-omic approach was used to characterize molecular changes resulting from C3H/APX-KD associated lignin modification and negative growth phenotype in Brachypodium distachyon.
