Inhibition of Very Long Chain Fatty Acids Synthesis Mediates PI3P Homeostasis at Endosomal Compartments

This article uses metazachlor, an inhibitor of VLCFA synthesis, to find that VLCFAs are involved in the TGN/MVB distribution of PI3P. This effect is independent from either synthesis of PI3P by PI3-kinase or degradation of PI(3,5)P2 into PI3P by the SUPPRESSOR OF ACTIN1 (SAC1) phosphatase. Results suggest that PI3P might be transferable from TGN to MVBs and that VLCFAs act in this process.

The Cluster Transfer Function of AtNEET Supports the Ferredoxin–Thioredoxin Network of Plant Cells (open access)

The Cluster Transfer Function of AtNEET Supports the Ferredoxin–Thioredoxin Network of Plant Cells

This article develops an inducible expression system to study AtNEET function in mature plants using a time-course proteomics approach. The authors report that the suppression of AtNEET cluster transfer function results in drastic changes in the expression of different members of the ferredoxin (Fd), Fd-thioredoxin (TRX) reductase (FTR), and TRX network of Arabidopsis, as well as in cytosolic cluster assembly proteins.

Deep Minimum and a Vortex for Positronium Formation in Low-Energy Positron-Helium Collisions (open access)

Deep Minimum and a Vortex for Positronium Formation in Low-Energy Positron-Helium Collisions

This article finds a zero in the positronium formation scattering amplitude and a deep minimum in the logarithm of the corresponding differential cross section for positron–helium collisions for an energy just above the positronium formation threshold. Results show that there is a valley in the logarithm of the positronium formation differential cross section that includes the deep minimum and also a minimum in the forward direction.

Histological features of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease revealed in response to mixed vehicle emission exposure and consumption of a high-fat diet in wildtype C57Bl/6 male mice (open access)

Histological features of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease revealed in response to mixed vehicle emission exposure and consumption of a high-fat diet in wildtype C57Bl/6 male mice

Article describes how non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently plaguing the population at pandemic proportions and is expected to become more prevalent over the next decade. The authors investigated the hypothesis that exposure to a mixture of gasoline and diesel engine emissions (MVE), coupled with the concurrent consumption of a HF diet, promotes the development of a NAFLD phenotype within the liver.

Biomimics of [FeFe]-hydrogenases incorporating redox-active ligands: synthesis, redox properties and spectroelectrochemistry of diiron-dithiolate complexes with ferrocenyl-diphosphines as Fe4S4 surrogates (open access)

Biomimics of [FeFe]-hydrogenases incorporating redox-active ligands: synthesis, redox properties and spectroelectrochemistry of diiron-dithiolate complexes with ferrocenyl-diphosphines as Fe4S4 surrogates

Article prepares and characterizes a small series of new [FeFe]-ase biomimics which contain a ferrocenyl diphosphine as a surrogate for the Fe₄S₄ moiety in the H-cluster of the enzyme. Mechanistic details of both proton reduction and H₂ oxidation have been studied by DFT allowing speculative reaction schemes to be developed.

Developmental programming of DNA methylation and gene expression patterns is associated with extreme cardiovascular tolerance to anoxia in the common snapping turtle (open access)

Developmental programming of DNA methylation and gene expression patterns is associated with extreme cardiovascular tolerance to anoxia in the common snapping turtle

This article explores DNA methylation's role in the regulation of gene expression in reptiles. Results show that embryonic hypoxia programs DNA methylation and gene expression patterns and that these changes are associated with enhanced cardiac anoxia tolerance in snapping turtles later in life.

A metabolomic platform to identify and quantify polyphenols in coffee and related species using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (open access)

A metabolomic platform to identify and quantify polyphenols in coffee and related species using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry

Article describes how products of plant secondary metabolism, such as phenolic compounds, flavonoids, alkaloids, and hormones, play an important role in plant growth, development, stress resistance. The authors state that the overall goal of this study was to develop a high-throughput workflow to identify and quantify plant polyphenols.

Fatty acid amide hydrolase and 9-lipoxygenase modulate cotton seedling growth by ethanolamide oxylipin levels (open access)

Fatty acid amide hydrolase and 9-lipoxygenase modulate cotton seedling growth by ethanolamide oxylipin levels

Article asserts that polyunsaturated N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) can be hydrolyzed by fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) or oxidized by lipoxygenase (LOX). Altogether, the authors conclude that the growth of cotton seedlings involves fine-tuning of 9-NAE-HOD levels via FAAH-mediated hydrolysis and LOX-mediated production, expanding the mechanistic understanding of plant growth modulation by NAE oxylipins to a perennial crop species.

A Novel ppb-Level Sensitive and Highly Selective Europium-Based Diketone Luminescent Sensor for the Quantitative Detection of Aluminum Ions in Water Samples (open access)

A Novel ppb-Level Sensitive and Highly Selective Europium-Based Diketone Luminescent Sensor for the Quantitative Detection of Aluminum Ions in Water Samples

Article describes how a novel Eu(tta)3([4,4′-(t-bu)2-2,2′-bpy)] complex (tta-thenoyltrifluoroacetone), a ratiometric luminescent-based optical sensor for the quantitative determination of aluminum ion, is synthesized and characterized using XRD and 1H NMR. The sensor reported here is tested for 11 common cations and shows no interference on sensitivity. According to the authors, this is the first known Eu-based luminescence sensor that successfully exhibited the ability to detect aluminum ions in ppb levels in aqueous environments.
