Analyzing Mass Spectrometry Imaging Data of 13C-Labeled Phospholipids in Camelina sativa and Thlaspi arvense (Pennycress) Embryos

This article uses currently available software and techniques to describe a workflow to analyze ¹³C-labeled isotopologues of the membrane lipid and storage oil lipid intermediate—phosphatidylcholine (PC). Results demonstrated greater ¹³C-isotopic labeling in the cotyledons of developing embryos compared with the embryonic axis.

Sub-Antarctic Freshwater Invertebrate Thermal Tolerances: An Assessment of Critical Thermal Limits and Behavioral Responses (open access)

Sub-Antarctic Freshwater Invertebrate Thermal Tolerances: An Assessment of Critical Thermal Limits and Behavioral Responses

Describes study which assessed the upper (CTmax) and lower (CTmin) thermal limits of three freshwater macroinvertebrate taxa with restricted low elevation distribution (20 m a.s.l.) and three taxa restricted to upper elevations (480 and 700 m a.s.l.) in the Magellanic sub-Antarctic ecoregion of southern Chile, and argues that their low tolerance to temperature increase can make them useful as indicators of thermal alteration in their habitats.

Homologues and homology and their related terms in phylogenetic systematics (open access)

Homologues and homology and their related terms in phylogenetic systematics

Article describes how, in the field of phylogenetic systematics, the terms homology and homologue and their relationship to cladistic terms such as character, character state, synapomorphy and symplesiomorphy, as well as their relationships to each other, have been and are still discussed frequently. A recent re-emergence of concepts of homology/homologue free of any reference to explanatory hypotheses prompted the authors to explore these concepts and their relationships to each other as well as to the concept of morpheme, as introduced recently.

Chemical and Genetic Studies on the Formation of Pyrrolones During the Biosynthesis of Cytochalasans (open access)

Chemical and Genetic Studies on the Formation of Pyrrolones During the Biosynthesis of Cytochalasans

This article investigates the role of the highly conserved α,β-hydrolase enzymes PyiE and ORFZ during the biosynthesis of pyrichalasin H and the ACE1 metabolite, respectively, using gene knockout and complementation techniques. Taken together the results suggest that the α,β-hydrolase enzymes are essential for first ring cyclisation, but the precise nature of the intermediates remains to be determined.

Spatial Engineering Direct Cooperativity between Binding Sites for Uranium Sequestration (open access)

Spatial Engineering Direct Cooperativity between Binding Sites for Uranium Sequestration

This article gives a full account of the conceptual and experimental development from randomly distributed functionalities to a convergent arrangement that facilitates cooperative binding is given, thus conferring exceptional affinity toward the analyte of interest. The concept presented here uncovers a new paradigm in the design of efficient sorbent materials by manipulating the spatial distribution to amplify the cooperation of functions.

Dissecting the transcriptional regulation of proanthocyanidin and anthocyanin biosynthesis in soybean (Glycine max) (open access)

Dissecting the transcriptional regulation of proanthocyanidin and anthocyanin biosynthesis in soybean (Glycine max)

This article analyzes the transcriptional control of PA and anthocyanin biosynthesis in soybean. Results show that engineered PA biosynthesis in soybean exhibits qualitative and spatial differences from the better-studied model systems Arabidopsis thaliana and Medicago truncatula, and suggest targets for engineering PAs in soybean plants.

Modulating Uranium Extraction Performance of Multivariate Covalent Organic Frameworks through Donor–Acceptor Linkers and Amidoxime Nanotraps (open access)

Modulating Uranium Extraction Performance of Multivariate Covalent Organic Frameworks through Donor–Acceptor Linkers and Amidoxime Nanotraps

Article presents a COF (covalent organic framework)-based adsorption-photocatalysis strategy for selective removal of uranyl from seawater in the absence of sacrificial reagents. This work shows that multivariate COF adsorption-photocatalysts can be rationally engineered to work efficiently and stably without sacrificial electron donors, thus opening the pathway for the economic and efficient extraction of uranium from the earth’s oceans.

Prioritizing riparian corridors for ecosystem restoration in urbanizing watersheds (open access)

Prioritizing riparian corridors for ecosystem restoration in urbanizing watersheds

This article explores restoration, rather than protection, being the basis for developing a watershed level strategy for improving water quality in urbanizing watersheds. This study uses a geographical information system (GIS) approach that utilizes riparian characteristics extracted from 40-meter wide corridors centered on streams and rivers. The model was applied to 90 sub-watersheds in the watershed of an important drinking water reservoir in north central Texas, USA.

Leaf Lipid Alterations in Response to Heat Stress of Arabidopsis thaliana (open access)

Leaf Lipid Alterations in Response to Heat Stress of Arabidopsis thaliana

Article measuring lipid levels with mass spectrometry to confirm the previously observed changes in Arabidopsis thaliana leaf lipids under three heat stress regimens. Additionally, in response to heat, increased oxidation of the fatty acyl chains of leaf galactolipids, sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerols, and phosphatidylglycerols, and incorporation of oxidized acyl chains into acylated monogalactosyldiacylglycerols are shown. The authors also observed increased levels of digalactosylmonoacylglycerols and monogalactosylmonoacylglycerols. The hypothesis that a defect in sterol glycosylation would adversely affect regrowth of plants after a severe heat stress regimen was tested, but differences between wild-type and sterol glycosylation-defective plants were not detected.

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age)

Authors of the article sought to examine the effectiveness of an acute prolonged exercise session on post-exercise executive function in physically active adults and to assess if age or pre-exercise cognitive performance was predictive of the magnitude of change in executive task performance. Their results support the effectiveness of a single prolonged exercise bout to augment executive function in physically active adults, irrespective of age.
