Isorhamnetin Inhibits Proliferation and Invasion and Induces Apoptosis through the Modulation of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor γ Activation Pathway in Gastric Cancer (open access)

Isorhamnetin Inhibits Proliferation and Invasion and Induces Apoptosis through the Modulation of Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor γ Activation Pathway in Gastric Cancer

Article investigating the potential effects of isorhamnetin (IH), a 3′-O-methylated metabolite of quercetin on the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) signaling cascade using proteomics technology platform, GC cell lines, and xenograft mice model. The study y proposes a novel agent for gastric cancer treatment.

Effect of increased embryonic temperature during developmental windows on survival, morphology and oxygen consumption of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (open access)

Effect of increased embryonic temperature during developmental windows on survival, morphology and oxygen consumption of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

This article applies a developmental 3-dimensional critical window experimental design for a vertebrate, using time, temperature, and phenotypic response (i.e., variables measured). To assess thermal effects on fish development, the authors examined trout hatchling phenotypes following rearing in constant temperatures (5, 10, 15 and 17.5 °C) and following exposure to increased temperature above 5 °C during specific developmental windows.

Elucidating the multifunctional role of the cell wall components in the maize exploitation (open access)

Elucidating the multifunctional role of the cell wall components in the maize exploitation

Article on the composition of the four cell wall fractions in diverse maize genotypes and to understand how this composition influences the resistance to pests, ethanol capacity and digestibility. Results evidence that there is no maize cell wall ideotype among the tested for optimal performance for various uses, and maize plants should be specifically bred for each particular application.

Abscisic acid regulates secondary cell-wall formation and lignin deposition in Arabidopsis thaliana through phosphorylation of NST1 (open access)

Abscisic acid regulates secondary cell-wall formation and lignin deposition in Arabidopsis thaliana through phosphorylation of NST1

Article using a combination of biochemical and genetic approaches to show how ABA can regulate lignin biosynthesis. This work provides a basis for designing trees and other biomass plants that are better adapted to stress and climate change. This article includes a correction on the first page.

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules (open access)

A cytoskeletal function for PBRM1 reading methylated microtubules

This article shows that that the coordinated read-write activity of the epigenetic machinery extends to the cytoskeleton, with PBRM1 in the PBAF chromatin remodeling complex reading microtubule methyl marks written by the SETD2 histone methyltransferase. This article opens a previously unknown window into how chromatin remodeler defects can drive disease via both epigenetic and cytoskeletal dysfunction.

Evaluation of pathways to the C-glycosyl isoflavone puerarin in roots of kudzu (Pueraria montana lobata) (open access)

Evaluation of pathways to the C-glycosyl isoflavone puerarin in roots of kudzu (Pueraria montana lobata)

Article describes how kudzu produces both O- and C-glycosylated isoflavones, with puerarin (C-glucosyl daidzein) as an important bioactive compound. The authors go on to explain how expression of recombinant UGTs in Escherichia coli and candidate C-glycosyltransferases in Medicago truncatula were used to explore substrate specificities, and gene silencing of UGT and key isoflavone biosynthetic genes in kudzu hairy roots employed to test hypotheses concerning the substrate(s) for C-glycosylation.

Benchmarking Metagenomic Classifiers on Simulated Ancient and Modern Metagenomic Data

Article describes how taxonomic profiling of ancient metagenomic samples is challenging due to the accumulation of specific damage patterns on DNA over time. The authors performed a comprehensive evaluation on simulated metagenomes representing human dental calculus microbiome, with the level of DNA damage successively raised to mimic modern to ancient metagenomes.
