Planar shock compression of spark plasma sintered B4C and B4C-TiB2 ceramic composites (open access)

Planar shock compression of spark plasma sintered B4C and B4C-TiB2 ceramic composites

Article describes how blending of ceramic constituent phases enhances sinterability and performance in high strength ceramics. The authors describe how a near fully dense blended boron carbide (B4C)-titanium diboride (TiB2) composite produced through spark plasma sintering (SPS) is probed to understand the mechanical performance under dynamic uniaxial strain, or shock compression.

Hedgehog signaling is involved in acquired resistance to KRASG12C inhibitors in lung cancer cells (open access)

Hedgehog signaling is involved in acquired resistance to KRASG12C inhibitors in lung cancer cells

Article states that although KRASG12C inhibitors have shown promising activity in lung adenocarcinomas harboring KRASG12C, acquired resistance to these therapies eventually occurs in most patients. The authors report that the hedgehog signal is induced by KRASG12C inhibitors and mediates KRAS re-expression in cancer cells treated with a KRASG12C inhibitor.

A Shannon-Theoretic Approach to the Storage–Retrieval Trade-Off in PIR Systems

Authors of the article consider the storage–retrieval rate trade-off in private information retrieval (PIR) systems using a Shannon-theoretic approach. Their focus is mostly on the canonical two-message two-database case, for which a coding scheme based on random codebook generation and the binning technique is proposed.

CPS: Medium: Integrating sensors, controls, and ecotoxicology with decoupled aquaponics using brackish groundwater and desalination concentrate for sustainable food production

Data management plan for the grant, "CPS: Medium: Integrating sensors, controls, and ecotoxicology with decoupled aquaponics using brackish groundwater and desalination concentrate for sustainable food production." This project aims to develop a cyber-physical system (CPS) testbed of integrated sensors, controls, machine learning, and ecotoxicology tools to engineer sustainable food production systems based on aquaculture using brackish water. The testbed includes an automated recirculating aquaculture system integrated with a real-time ecotoxicology system, implementing the system using desalination concentrate to demonstrate that brackish groundwater desalination costs can be offset by using its byproducts for profitable food production. This project will engage students of the local communities in three major ways: developing an exhibit and activity emphasizing interdisciplinary CPS research conducted during the academic year, offering summer research experiences to students from underrepresented groups, and participating in STEM outreach events targeting underrepresented groups.

Effect of Polymer Removal on the Morphology and Phase of the Nanoparticles in All-Inorganic Heterostructures Synthesized via Two-Step Polymer Infiltration

This article uses iron oxide/alumina heterostructures formed by two-step infiltration of polystyrene-block-polyvinyl pyridine block copolymer with iron and aluminum precursors from the solution and vapor-phases, respectively, to show that the phase and morphology of iron oxide nanoparticles dramatically depend on the approach used to remove the polymer. The article extends the boundaries of structure manipulations in multicomponent heterostructures synthesized using polymer infiltration synthesis and their properties.

Ordering-mediated local nano-clustering results in unusually large Hall-Petch strengthening coefficients in high entropy alloys (open access)

Ordering-mediated local nano-clustering results in unusually large Hall-Petch strengthening coefficients in high entropy alloys

This article reports a dramatic increase in the grain boundary strengthening or Hall-Petch coefficient, K, by systematically investigating the effect of Al addition on tensile yield strength in CoFeNi and CoCrFeNi high entropy alloys (HEAs) or complex concentrated alloys (CCAs). Such a trend is attributed to the ordering mediated nano-clustering in Al containing HEA/CCAs.

Hydrogen bonding interactions of H2O and SiOH on a boroaluminosilicate glass corroded in aqueous solution (open access)

Hydrogen bonding interactions of H2O and SiOH on a boroaluminosilicate glass corroded in aqueous solution

This article simulates hydrous species (H2O and Si-OH) on nano-porous alteration layers (gels) formed on a boroaluminosilicate glass called International Simple Glass corroded in aqueous solutions at pH 7 and pH 9, and initially saturated with soluble silicon-containing species were analyzed using linear and non-linear vibrational spectroscopy in combination with molecular dynamics simulations. The simulation and experimental results obtained in this study indicate that the water mobility in the gel formed at pH 9 could be slower than that in the gel formed at pH 7, and as a result, the leaching rate at pH 9 is slower than that at pH 7.
