Article drawing on a process-focused model of interpersonal decentering's causal validity, the authors manipulated activation experimentally, comparing decentering scores from expressive writing essays under standard instructions (activation condition) versus control instructions, then correlated decentering scores with use of activated language. With condition controlled, both decentering scores correlated significantly with greater proportions of present-tense verbs, positive emotion words, and cognitive words, showing trait effects.

Article estimating the effects of different scenarios of forest fragmentation to find an optimized pattern of forest patches for increasing pollination in an agricultural landscape. The authors use simulated agricultural landscapes and landscape metrics to estimate the relationship between pollination and landscape structure.

This article used gaze-tracking technology to understand the navigation and use of web-based health information by deaf adults who communicate with sign language and by hearing adults. The findings of this study show that incorporating gaze-tracking technology offers beneficial avenues for better understanding how individuals interact with health information.

Article providing an explanation as to why citizens of some states differ from others in their role conceptions, especially those states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union. The authors offer a novel theoretical explanation that accounts for variation in roles, based on each country’s historic relationship with Russia, its emerging relationship with the West and China, and domestic ethnopolitical conditions.

This article argues that elite purges in consolidated dictatorships have a different purpose and logic. Dictators, who have consolidated their position, seek to maximize the efficiency of rule by making the elite obedient through purges. For this purpose, dictators carefully select the purge target by considering various factors. To test this theory, the article examines the pattern of elite purges in North Korea based on an original individual-level dataset, which contains the personal background of 367 North Korean elites and their purge records between 1948 and 2019. Findings suggest that coup-proofing is not the only purpose of elite purges but that ensuring the leader’s political superiority is another purpose of elite purges in consolidated dictatorships.

Data management plan for the grant, "Patterns and Drivers of Intra-Urban Heat and Pollution Island Interactions." Research on the urban heat island (UHI) and urban pollution island (UPI) effects at the neighborhood scale by integrating sensor networks, earth observations, and geospatial analysis. The spatial patterns and intra-annual variability of UHI-UPI interactions and model the urban form drivers controlling UHI-UPI interaction variability will also be examined. These data will be analyzed to determine when and where urban heat islands and urban pollution islands occur, and the risks that their interaction poses to urban residents. These results will support informed decision-making for urban heat and air pollution mitigation.

This article investigates the psychometric properties of the Posttrauma Risky Behaviors Questionnaire (PRBQ) using item response theory to examine (a) item analysis (b) person fit, and (c) differential item functioning (DIF) across gender-based groups and two different samples.

This article evaluates the targeting strategy of a national-level program in Mexico that distributed agricultural support based on seven criteria that prioritized poor smallholder farming communities at high risk of cropland failure. The findings highlight the continued lack of financial support for smallholder agriculture in Mexico, despite program rules and priority statements that stress the vulnerability of this sector. The article also illustrates the important role of spatial targeting in better aligning agricultural support payments with stated policy priorities.

This article uses three common open-access satellite image datasets (Sentinel-2B, Landsat-8, and Gaofen-6) for extracting information on rocky desertification in a typical karst region (Guangnan County, Yunnan) of southwest China, using three machine-learning algorithms implemented in the Python programming language: random forest (RF), bagged decision tree (BDT), and extremely randomized trees (ERT).

This article studies atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition in urban areas on two native prairie grass species, Schizachyrium scoparium and Nasella leucotricha. Findings indicate that while native prairie grasses may exhibit a positive biomass response to increased N deposition up to ~18 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, total inorganic N deposition is well above the estimated critical load for herbaceous plant species richness in the tallgrass prairie of the Great Plains ecoregion and thus may negatively affect these plant communities.

This article proposes an educational methodology, called field environmental philosophy (FEP), which orients ecotourism practices to reconnect citizens and nature in order to contribute to local and global sustainability. FEP’s methodology is starting to be adapted in other world regions, such as Germany, Japan, and Mexico, to integrate education and ecotourism for sustainability.

Article examining the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on pollination separately according to the Lonsdorf model. Results show that the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation on pollination are completely different at the landscape and farm levels. This article shows that using the Lonsdorf model could lead to confusing results for the landscape ecologists and farmers who want to reduce the adverse effects of fragmentation on their products by creating new forest patches.

This article collected detailed primary data—the Elementary School Operating Status database (ESOS)—to measure the percentage of school districts offering in-person, remote, and hybrid instruction models for elementary schools by state in September 2020 to understand the nature and magnitude of school closures across states during the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on maternal labor force participation. The article shows that schools are a vital source of care for young children, and that without in-person instruction, mothers have been sidelined from the labor force.

This article uses agent-based simulations in three “artificial societies” (one predominantly religious; one predominantly secular; and one in between), to demonstrate that worldview pluralism within one’s neighborhood and family social networks can be a significant predictor of religious (dis)affiliation but in pluralistic societies worldview diversity is less important and, instead, people move toward worldview neutrality.
