The letter is an expression of concern from the consortia who met prior to discuss the recent evaluation of the Institute. In the letter they have listed several of their concerns about the process and reporting methods used by the Center to evaluate. While the Institute understands the need to evaluate their efforts it has questioned their continued partnership and the entire collaboration and its impact for the future. In regards in the fact that the Art Museum of South Texas is submitting a proposal through Corpus Christi Art Foundation, Inc. for funds to support educational programs of the Museum and that NTIEVA, North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, supports and endorses the proposal and urges the Commission to take thoughtful consideration in the funding. McCarter and Davis go into detail about what NTIEVA does and what their program DBAE, discipline-art based education does for teachers, students and districts they work with. McCarter and Davis finish their letter saying how their continued collaboration and support in every way makes it possible to formulate art education initiatives and additional learning opportunities.

Attached to the letter are details of the conference's agenda for January 11th. In regards to Berry's upcoming participation in attending the Education Institute's National Conference, "Education For the Workplace Through the Arts" from January 9th - 10th, 1997 and the DBAE, discipline-based art education, leadership forum that follows on January 11th. The DBAE forum will discuss the mobilization of DBAE to a national scale and elicit ideas about the best way to mobilize such practitioners.

The letter describes the work done by Davis and McCarter, through the use of the Edward and Betty Marcus Foundation grant, to produce portfolios using images from the five museums that are apart of the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts consortium. The grant allowed them to produce 500 copies of the portfolio, which were given at no cost to the schools in the consortium for educational purposes, however, because of the popularity of the portfolio and the limited number of the original publication they have been contacted by vendors who have interest in producing the portfolio commercially. Davis and McCarter write about what a great opportunity this could mean when it comes to resources for the continued work of the Institute, yet one issues is that the Museum has to give them written consent to reproduce the images and content.

In regards to having staff faculty from the Marcus Foundation Board invited to the January conference as Melba Whatley is concerned about educating the board and feels like the conference would be a good opportunity. Davis understands, however, that not all the board members are able to attend due to the limited spacing the Getty Center has but would appreciation anything they can put together.
