[The Thin Etched Line]

Photographs of the 1999-2000 artist's book competition honorable mention "The Thin Etched Line" created by Teel Savage. The volume is composed of fragments of intaglio prints of various styles and subjects, on which a single red line was added across every image. It is bound in white paper-covered boards with a red line, sewn Coptic style. The first image shows the bound book opened up. The page on the left contains a drawing of a young woman seen at a top angle. Image 2, the bound book is opened up. The page on the left contains a drawing of a young woman seen from the front. [Book in a Steel Box]

Photographs of the 2005-2006 artist's book competition winner "Book in a Steel Box" created by Eric Blake. A small cloth-bound volume with graphite lines throughout is welded into a steel box. The book is visible along the spine and fore-edge through steel bars. The box does not open, and the book cannot be removed, making it an "inaccessible text." [20 Soldiers a Day]

Photographs of the 2009-2010 artist's book competition winner "20 Soldiers a Day" created by Jung Eun Lee (or Jungeun Lee). The artist's book is a Japanese-sewn volume consisting of double-leaves sewn together. The recto of each leaf has a changing pattern of stains and marks, and the verso of each leaf has text from the inner surface becoming more and more visible as the reader moves through the volume. The next-to-last leaf has complete text, the testimony of a young Korean girl who was forced into sexual slavery at a comfort station for Japanese military personnel in Taiwan during World War II. The volume is tied closed with triple-strand white string and is wrapped in a stained square of white cloth that is tied with twine. The first image of is the cloth bundle up and tied together by the twine. Image 2, opened up cloth book. The left side has few stains, and the right side some black marks with string sticking out at the top. Image 3, closeup of a cloth page with black marks across the middle of it. [Response to Stress]

Photographs of the 2011-2012 artist's book competition winner "Response to Stress" created by Catherine Snapp Lavoie. The books contains no text. It is an accordion-fold book with five panels of double card stock joined together with one piece of cloth running in between the two layers of the panels. The verso and recto of each panel features collages in pastel earth tone colors. Pieces of crochet thread are applied to both recto and verso of the three panels. One panel has thread on the verso, the remaining on the recto only. The book is housed in a clam shell box that is covered in two-tone letterpress paper. The first image is the book opened up showing the pattern on the panels that are splashes of tan/yellow colors, stretched out in front of the case with a splotch of tan over it. Image 2, the stretched out panels and case seen from the top. Image 3, the open panels of the book are seen from the front, the yellow/tan splotches more visible with thread over it and propped on top the box.

[Surveying transit tool]

Two photographs of a surveying transit tool from the Byrd Williams Family Photography Collection, held by UNT Special Collections. The first image is of the tool alone, pointing to the distance at an angle so that a majority of the parts are visible. It is made out of a bronze material with glass parts and it is attached to a wooden base. The second image is of the tool and the box that it is stored it. The box has leather on the outside and straps and buckles with metal attachments. It is clearly old and has aged and fraying spots.
