Numerical Values of the Hausdorff and Packing Measures for Limit Sets of Iterated Function Systems

In the context of fractal geometry, the natural extension of volume in Euclidean space is given by Hausdorff and packing measures. These measures arise naturally in the context of iterated function systems (IFS). For example, if the IFS is finite and conformal, then the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of the limit sets agree and the corresponding Hausdorff and packing measures are positive and finite. Moreover, the map which takes the IFS to its dimension is continuous. Developing on previous work, we show that the map which takes a finite conformal IFS to the numerical value of its packing measure is continuous. In the context of self-similar sets, we introduce the super separation condition. We then combine this condition with known density theorems to get a better handle on finding balls of maximum density. This allows us to extend the work of others and give exact formulas for the numerical value of packing measure for classes of Cantor sets, Sierpinski N-gons, and Sierpinski simplexes.

Ready to Run: Fort Worth's Mexicans in Search of Representation, 1960-2000

This dissertation analyzes Fort Worth's Mexican community from 1960 to 2000 while considering the idea of citizenship through representation in education and politics. After establishing an introductory chapter that places the research in context with traditional Chicano scholarship while utilizing prominent ideas and theories that exist within Modern Imperial studies, the ensuing chapter looks into the rise of Fort Worth's Mexican population over the last four decades of the twentieth century. Thereafter, this work brings the attention to Mexican education in Fort Worth beginning in the 1960s and going through the end of the twentieth century. This research shows some of the struggles Mexicans encountered as they sought increased representation in the classroom, on the school board, and within other areas of the Fort Worth Independent School District. Meanwhile, Mexicans were in direct competition with African Americans who also sought increased representation while simultaneously pushing for more aggressive integration efforts against the wishes of Mexican leadership. Subsequently, this research moves the attention to political power in Fort Worth, primarily focusing on the Fort Worth city council. King of the News: An Agenda-Setting Approach to the John Oliver Effect

Journalists have insisted that John Oliver has inspired a new kind of journalism. They argue that Oliver's show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has inspired real-world action, a phenomenon journalists have called the "John Oliver Effect." Oliver, a comedian, refuses these claims. This thesis is the result of in-depth research into journalists' claims through the lens of agenda-setting. By conducting a qualitative content analysis, I evaluated the message characteristics of framing devices used on Oliver's show, then compared those message characteristics to the message characteristics and framing devices employed by legacy media.

Cold-Formed Steel Member Connections Using BAC Screw Fasteners

In this project, the main research objective is intend to seek criteria for evaluating the capacity of BAC screw fasteners with mixed configuration of waterproof seal washer, sealer tape and different pre-drill holes to determine shear and tension strength values for the screws used in cold-formed steel connections. The thesis presents the design methods and test program conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of the screw connections in shear and tension test. Test results were compared with AISI design provisions to determine if new design equations will be developed for those screws used in BAC cooling tower applications. LRFD resistance factors and ASD safety factors were investigated to the proposed design equations.

The Evolution of Learning Technologies within the UNC German Consortium 2000-2016: A Hermeneutic Phenomenlogical Analysis of German Faculty Member Experiences

Beginning in 2000 and continuing today, the University of North Carolina (UNC) German Consortium offers online German courses to undergraduate students across sixteen of the seventeen UNC public universities. The delivery of online classes differs per faculty member and little previous research investigated the UNC German Consortium's learning technologies. This dissertation investigates the evolution of learning technologies within the UNC German Consortium over the last sixteen years among German faculty from different UNC public universities. Seven faculty and one administrator shared their experiences through interviews. The methodology for this research was hermeneutic phenomenology. Interviewees shared their experiences with learning technology and teaching in the UNC German Consortium including how learning technologies changed over time. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to deduce themes. Themes included the importance of the North Carolina Research Education Network (NC REN) for teaching German online, an asynchronous versus synchronous debate, how professors taught in synchronous courses, the importance of learning management systems (LMS) systems, the resilient characteristics of UNC German Consortium faculty, and the need for continual learning as an instructor.

Topology and Lattice-Based Structural Design Optimization for Additively Manufactured Medical Implants

Topology-based optimization techniques and lattice structures are powerful ways to accomplish lightweight components with enhanced mechanical performance. Recent developments in additive manufacturing (AM) have led the way to extraordinary opportunities in realizing complex designs that are derived from topology and lattice-based structural optimization. The main aim of this work is to give a contribution, in the integration between structural optimization techniques and AM, by proposing a setup of a proper methodology for rapid development of optimized medical implants addressing oseeointegration and minimization of stress shielding related problems. The validity of the proposed methodology for a proof of concept was demonstrated in two real-world case studies: a tibia intramedullary implant and a shoulder hemi prosthetics for two bone cancer patients. The optimization was achieved using topology optimization and replacement of solid volumes by lattice structures. Samples of three lattice unit cell configurations were designed, fabricated, mechanically tested, and compared to select the most proper configuration for the shoulder hemi prosthesis. Weight reductions of 30% and 15% were achieved from the optimization of the initial design of the tibia intramedullary implant and the shoulder hemiprosthesis respectively compared to initial designs. Microfluidic-Based Fabrication of Photonic Microlasers for Biomedical Applications

Optical microlasers have been used in different engineering fields and for sensing various applications. They have been used in biomedical fields in applications such as for detecting protein biomarkers for cancer and for measuring biomechanical properties. The goal of this work is to propose a microfluidic-based fabrication method for fabricating optical polymer based microlasers, which has advantages, over current methods, such us the fabrication time, the contained cost, and the reproducibility of the microlaser's size. The microfluidic setup consisted of microfluidic pumps and a flow focusing droplet generator chip made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Parameters such as the flow rate (Q) and the pressure (P) of both continuous and dispersed phases are taken into account for determining the microlaser's size and a MATLAB imaging tool is used to reduce the microlaser's diameter estimation. In addition, two applications are discussed: i) electric field measurements via resonator doped with Di-Anepps-4 voltage sensitive dye, and ii) strain measurements in a 3D printed bone-like structure to mimic biomedical implantable sensors.

A Systemic Model for Family Functioning: Mutual Influences of Spousal Attachment, Marital Adjustment, and Coparenting

The current study examined direct and indirect influences of romantic attachment processes, marital adjustment, and the coparenting relationship on family functioning. Data was collected from a community sample of 86 heterosexual couples with a child aged eight to eleven living in the home. Both spouses completed a demographic questionnaire, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale, the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, the Coparenting Scale, and the Self-Report Family Inventory as part of a larger study on family processes in middle childhood. Data analysis included multilevel modeling, utilizing the actor-partner interdependence model. Results indicated that marital adjustment mediated the association between attachment processes and family functioning, suggesting that a healthy marital relationship is an important variable that helps explain links between attachment security and the family functioning. Findings also highlighted the benefit of conceptualizing adult romantic attachment, marital, and coparental subsystems within a systemic framework.

The lost generation: World War I poetry selected from the Donald Thomas War Poetry Collection

Donald Lee Thomas was born in Dallas, Texas in 1943. Before graduating high school he enlisted, at age 17, in the U.S. Navy, serving several tours of duty before being ordered to Vietnam in 1968. There he served as part of Medical Unit Self-Contained Transportable ONE, a joint Navy and Marine Corps crew which operated an experimental infl atable hospital with jet turbine engines. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V” for his service in Vietnam. In 1972 Mr. Thomas graduated with a Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences from the University of North Texas and briefly joined the library faculty of the University of Arizona before being accepted for commissioning in the Navy Medical Service Corp in 1973. In his first commissioned position as Assistant Chairman of the Educational Resources Department at the Naval Medical Center of Bethesda, Maryland his duties included management of the professional library. Mr. Thomas retired from the Navy in 1986 to pursue his interest in librarianship. He served in faculty librarian positions at Baylor Health Science Library and Texas A&M University before taking an administrative position with the Harris County Public Library System where he has responsibility for Financial Services …
