PubMed Commons: What Happened on the Way to the Forum? Retrospective Explanatory Case Study Research and Lessons Learned from the U.S. National Library of Medicine's Online Forum for Open Science

The U.S. National Library of Medicine brought the intensifying interest in open science to national attention when it joined enthusiastic scientists to introduce and host an Amazon-like rating forum on PubMed—the world's largest database of indexed biomedical and life sciences literature. The result was PubMed Commons. In June 2013, the commenting forum was introduced for open discussion about published scientific literature as part of a three-pronged approach to improve research rigor, reproducibility, and transparency. In Feb. 2018, the forum was unexpectedly discontinued. This retrospective explanatory case study research asked the question, "What happened on the way to the forum?" Answers came from a variety of resources using multiple methodologies for data collection and analysis. Historical data from PubMed Commons' 7,629 comments and 1,551 commenters; key informant interviews with PubMed Commons editors; and a systematized search for published articles, gray literature; and social media content about PubMed Commons were analyzed using computer-mediated discourse analysis and a social network analysis. Results from the quantitative content analysis described a forum with little participation, and the qualitative content analysis demonstrated that active forum members were focused primarily on providing links to other information resources and discussing aspects of post-publication peer review. Low-Energy Electron Irradiation of 2D Graphene and Stability Investigations of 2D MoS2

In this work, we demonstrate the mechanism for etching exfoliated graphene on SiO2 and other technological important substrates (Si, SiC and ITO), using low-energy electron sources. Our mechanism is based on helium ion sputtering and vacancy formation. Helium ions instead of incident electrons cause the defects that oxygen reacts with and etches graphene. We found that etching does not occur on low-resistivity Si and ITO. Etching occurs on higher resistivity Si and SiC, although much less than on SiO2. In addition, we studied the degradation mechanism of MoS2 under ambient conditions using as-grown and preheated mono- and thicker-layered MoS2 films. Thicker-layered MoS2 do not exhibit the growth of dendrites that is characteristic of monolayer degradation. Dendrites are observed to stop at the monolayer-bilayer boundary. Raman and photoluminescence spectra of the aged bilayer and thicker-layered films are comparable to those of as-grown films. We found that greater stability of bilayers and thicker layers supports a previously reported mechanism for monolayer degradation involving Förster resonance energy transfer. As a result, straightforward and scalable 2D materials integration, or air stable heterostructure device fabrication may be easily achieved. Effects of Attachment Height and Rail Material of Resistance Training Sled on Trunk Lean and Jerk During Linear Acceleration Training

Sprint acceleration training has been highly researched and found that resistance sleds are one of the most effective tools for maximizing training adaptations. The resistance sled is being used by many of the world leaders in athletic training but has yet to be researched for the kinetic and kinematic effects some of its key components cause. The aim of this study was to better understand the effects of the attachment height on the sled and sled rail material on the user's trunk lean and jerking effect caused by the sled. This was done because it was hypothesized that the attachment height has a direct impact on trunk lean and sled rail material has a direct impact on jerk caused by the sled. To test these assumptions, experimental and theoretical data was collected using a single subject study analyzing trunk lean and acceleration values of the sled. The results presented a significant decrease in trunk lean (more horizontal line of action) when the attachment height was raised. Additionally, no significant values were attained to support the assumption that by modifying the sled rail material, jerking effects will decrease. Optical Emission Spectroscopy Monitoring Method for Additively Manufactured Iron-Nickel and Other Complex Alloy Samples

The method of optical emission spectroscopy has been used with Fe-Ni and other complex alloys to investigate in-situ compositional control for additive manufacturing. Although additive manufacturing of metallic alloys is an emerging technology, compositional control will be a challenge that needs to be addressed for a multitude of industries going forward for next-gen applications. This current scope of work includes analysis of ionized species generated from laser and metal powder interaction that is inherent to the laser engineered net shaping (LENS) process of additive manufacturing. By quantifying the amount of a given element's presence in the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum, this amount can be compared to the actual amount present in the sample via post-processing and elemental dispersive x-ray (EDX) data analysis. For this work a commercially available linear silicon CCD camera captured metallic ion peaks found within the ultraviolet (UV) region to avoid background contamination from blackbody radiation. Although the additive manufacturing environment can prove difficult to measure in-situ due to time dependent phenomena, extreme temperatures, and defect generation, OEM was able to capture multiple data points over a time series that showed a positive correlation between an element's peak intensity and the amount of that element found in the …

Artificial Intelligence Teammates in a Collaborative Information Seeking Environment from the Perspective of Women Engineers in the United States

The purpose of this study was to collect design requirements from women engineers on artificial intelligence teammates such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Trello. A mixed methods research design was used for this study with an online survey and semi-structure interviews. The study results revealed design requirements from women engineers including solutions to sociotechnical issues that could arise from artificial intelligence teammates in the workplace. The results showed various ways women engineers collaborate in the workplace with and without artificial intelligence. Additionally, women engineers' attitude towards artificial intelligence was examined to identify if there was a correlation to self-efficacy. This research study fills a previous study gap that solicited design requirements from research scientists, by soliciting practitioners. Practitioners such as women engineers are underrepresented in the workplace, and they could benefit from an artificial intelligence teammate with their design requirements. Finally, this study contributes to the information science literature on collaborative information seeking, artificial intelligence design, and engineers' information seeking behaviors.

Continuing the Work of Our Ancestors: Black Radical Leadership and Disruptive Pedagogies in Affirming the Well-being of Black Students

Using Black feminist thought and BlackCrit/critical race theory frameworks, this qualitative study examined Black educators' practices in addressing the behavior of their students in an urban school district. It utilized counternarratives and storytelling to explore the cultural dynamics at play between Black educators and their Black students. The Black educators in this study operated under several behavior systems, including positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS), socio-emotional learning (SEL), restorative practices (RPs), and zero tolerance policies (ZTPs). Such systems have been implemented based on research that they have the capacity to train Black students to make appropriate decisions regarding their behavior. These systems are also reinforced under the notion that they create learning spaces which promote academic achievement. Due to their own experiences and understanding about how institutional practices and disciplinary interventions result disproportionately in oppression and violence against Black students, these educators disrupted these practices and utilized cultural approaches that centered Black-ness. In doing so, they were able to address behavior and affirm Black students' well-being. The cultural approaches conceptualized as disruptive pedagogies include aspects of othermothering, otherfathering, critical caring, sermonizing, womanist caring, and Black masculine caring. Making Sense of Things

Making Sense of Things is a piece composed through consideration of the relationship between music, meaning, and materiality. The piece, written for voice, flute, percussion, and live electronics, explores topics of the "sensible" and "nonsensical" in music, moving through a variety of sonic episodes that feature different notational approaches, electronic textures, technical instrumental practice, and theatrical elements in order to explore a variety of expressive possibilities while unified around the central musical ideas of scratching sounds and metal bars. The critical essay examines the relationship between the piece and the theoretical writings which inspired it. Reading through the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, I examine the relationship between Making Sense of Things and new materialist discourses, affect theory, and semiotics.

Alloy Design, Processing and Deformation Behavior of Metastable High Entropy Alloys

This dissertation presents an assortment of research aimed at understanding the composition-dependence of deformation behavior and the response to thermomechanical processing, to enable efficient design and processing of low stacking fault energy (SFE) high entropy alloy (HEAs). The deformation behavior and SFE of four low SFE HEAs were predicted and experimentally verified using electron microscopy and in-situ neutron diffraction. A new approach of employing a minimization function to refine and improve the accuracy of a semi-empirically derived expression relating composition with SFE is demonstrated. Ultimately, by employing the minimization function, the average difference between experimental and predicted SFE was found to be 2.64 mJ m-2. Benchmarking with currently available approaches suggests that integrating minimization functions can substantially improve prediction accuracy and promote efficient HEA design with expansion of databases. Additionally, in-situ neutron diffraction was used to present the first in-situ measurement of the interspacing between stacking faults (SFs) which were correlated with work hardening behavior. Electron transparent specimens (< ~100 nm thick) were used in order to resolve nanoscale planar faults instead of the thicker sub-sized specimens (on the order of millimeters in thickness) which exhibit the classical stages III work hardening behavior characteristic of low SFE metals and alloys. …

Anxiously Yours, (fe)mail: A Narrative Exploration of Anxiety, Empathy and Hope in Art Museum Education

This research explores the relationship between narrative, empathy and anxiety in art museum education. The study begins from my personal experience with anxiety and is methodologically rooted in narrative inquiry and friendship as method. In this study, I propose a creative method of narrative postcard writing called (fe)mail – rooted in a feminist ethic of care that seeks to understand and empathize with the experience of others through correspondence. This research asks relevant questions about the future of art museum programming for mental illness and the act of writing (fe)mail as a reflective practice for academics and educators in the field of social science. In my narrative analysis of the program and the data, I also problematizes my role as researcher, educator and friend throughout the study by considering my own biases, expectations and personal educator agenda. Nontraditional Six-Four Chords and Their Impact on Middleground Structures in Schumann, Brahms, and Saint-Säens

This dissertation explores middleground functionality of six-four chords by combining a voice-leading approach with hypermetrical analysis. By acknowledging the functional ambiguity of certain six-four chords that do not fit into traditional classifications (Aldwell and Schachter's cadential, consonant, passing, and neighboring six-four), or that can be seen as fitting in more than one category, I show that our interpretation of deeper-level structures is contingent upon how we choose to hear the functionality of these harmonies. Three types of six-four chords are introduced: cadential/consonant, passing/cadential, and neighboring/consonant six-four, illustrated by works by Robert Schumann, Brahms, and Saint-Säens. Each pair refers to an ambiguity—the same chord invites two alternative harmonic interpretations. I call these chords nontraditional in the sense that they shed more light on the musical structure with their ambiguity, rather than when being wedged into a single type of a six-four chord. This approach renews the ways of hearing the malleability of nonconventional Romantic structures and permits us to trace the path of each work as a unique tonal trajectory from a listener's perspective.

Creating a Public Pedagogy for Anti-Rape Activism: How We Learn to Advocate for Others

This thesis explores the way we learn to advocate for sexual assault survivors. This multi-methodological, qualitative study examines both popular cultural representations of sexual assault and official training materials provided by rape crisis centers and domestic violence organizations as sites of pedagogical messaging. I argue that it is imperative to incorporate intersectional feminist frameworks into understanding how advocacy is animated in these different sites of learning. This project offers an intersectional feminist analysis of two television shows: Netflix's Unbelievable and HBO's I May Destroy You, in addition to the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) training manual and supplemental training materials from six different rape crisis centers within a 75-mile radius of the Dallas Ft. Worth metroplex. Together, both sets of texts work pedagogically to teach us who is a worthy victim, what counts as "real" rape (and to challenge this very framework), and who deserves organizational resources. This thesis concludes by offering an Intersectional Rape Advocacy Toolkit, aimed at offering a set of values, lessons, and practices necessary for activists to grow in mutual advocacy for survivors and mutual support for fellow activists working to put an end to rape culture.

Participatory Research with Adolescent Emergent Bilinguals: Creating a Third Space to Support Students' Language and Literacy Learning

Teachers face pressures to meet the needs of an ever-changing diverse population of learners while simultaneously attempting to assist students in meeting state standards. There is a body of research that supports emergent bilinguals' growth in reading and writing. However, those practices do not necessarily reflect classroom instruction nor the needs of the students. The purpose of this study was to examine adolescent emergent bilinguals' perceptions about their learning from research-based literacy practices implemented in a classroom designed as a third space. Data were collected using participatory research and photo-elicitation and were analyzed using inductive analysis. The emergent bilinguals provided their insights about class assignments. Findings revealed that research-based literacy practices support emergent bilinguals' perceptions of learning when they are made accessible to them in distinctive yet extensive ways. For students to uncover which literacy activities they value, teachers need to present them with various opportunities to explore their own learning and encourage them to take ownership of their learning. Educators must consider the unique and individual needs of emergent bilinguals when designing the classroom environment and the lessons based on the standards. Recommendations for practitioners, professional development coordinators, and researchers are presented.

Socialization of the Strong Black Woman Schema

Black mothers socialize their daughters to embody the strong Black woman (SBW) schema to help them navigate gendered racist oppression. While research indicates that ascribing to the SBW schema offers Black women psychosocial benefits (e.g., increased self-esteem), identifying with the SBW schema has been linked to several negative psychological outcomes (e.g., anxiety, depression, and stress). Considering the evidenced negative implications associated with identifying with the SBW schema on Black women's mental health, the current study had three aims: (1) investigate the socialization messages Black women received about strong Black womanhood, (2) explore the extent to which they identified with these messages, and (3) assess the implications of this socialization on Black women's functioning. To address these aims researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 11 Black college women (Mage = 20.09; SD = 1.04). For this manuscript, we extracted data pertaining to aim one and analyzed this data using a consensual qualitative research (CQR) data approach. Findings revealed messages Black women were given about strong Black womanhood (i.e., know your worth, depend on yourself, overcome societal barriers, little to no messages about strong Black womanhood, and additional responses) and illuminated behaviors mothers modeled that exemplified strength (i.e., self-sufficient, preserving, caretaking, and additional …

Bio-Inspired Designs to Reduce Human-Exoskeleton Interaction to Prevent Falls in an Aging Population

As a large generation ages, the collective financial and ethical responsibility to prevent egregious bodily harm through fall prevention and gait assistant exoskeleton devices increases. Risk for falls increases with age and the severity of the fall does as well. To support this elderly population, motorized exoskeletons can both increase stability as well as respond faster to fall scenarios, but current models do not more around the existing biological framework. Giving participants a range of motion in key pelvic areas can closely approximate synchronous rotation around the femoral head, while limiting an increase in their sagittal profile. Utilizing 3D printed components while incorporating existing orthic methods provide short production times on modular designs. Although primarily mechanically based, these designs consider electronic requirements and are capable for supporting movement for a 200 lbs. user at a brisk walking pace for 1 hour.

Exploring the Complex Exchange Relationships in Direct Selling Channels

This dissertation research explores the factors that influence direct selling agents' sales performance and job satisfaction. In the direct selling channels, the agents not only sell the products to customers. They may concurrently perform a "distributor" role as a stand-alone entity composed of their own sales network. This dissertation research features two essays. The first essay investigates how direct selling agents' perceptions of control and sense of belonging relate to PO. This essay further explores how PO influences job performance and job satisfaction. Results suggest that perception of control and sense of belonging fuel PO. Furthermore, leader-member exchange mediates the relationship between PO and sales performance, as well as PO and job satisfaction in direct selling networks. The second essay introduces a new construct (relational incongruity) and discusses how complex sales environments and direct selling agents' organizational structures influence the relational incongruity in their organization and its ensuring effect on sales performance and job satisfaction. The results indicate that organizational complexity is positively related to relational incongruity. However, customer complexity has a negative impact on relational incongruity. Relational incongruity in direct selling agents' organizations has negative effects on job satisfaction but has no effects on sales performance. Epistemic curiosity undermines …

Environmental Philosophy after Standing Rock

In 2016, An estimated 15,000 people representing 400 Indigenous Nations and non-indigenous allies gathered at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in solidarity against the Dakota Access Pipeline to protect Mni Sose, the Missouri River. They became known as the Water Protectors. This dissertation analyzes the response in environmental philosophy journals to the #noDAPL protest at Standing Rock. Even though the Stand at Standing Rock became one of the most important and monumental environmental protests of the last decade, neither Standing Rock nor the Water Protectors appear in environmental philosophy journals at all--not once. Why? I suggest a possible answer by exploring the Stand of the Water Protectors as a moment in a much longer continuous history of resistance to settler colonialism. Settler colonialism attempts to facilitate the erasure of Indigenous populations by colonial ones, in order to gain access to territory—to land. The omission of Standing Rock from environmental philosophy journals represents the ease with which environmental philosophy can become complicit in the project of settler colonial erasure and replacement through absence. Drawing on Indigenous land-based philosophies of kinship, Latin American decolonial philosophy, settler colonial theory, and frameworks of Indigenous environmental justice, I show how the geo-politics of colonialism have …

Sociality in Harris's Hawks Revisited: Patterns of Reproductive Output and Delayed Dispersal

In the lower Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, more than half the nesting groups of Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus) include at least one auxiliary group member in addition to a breeding pair. To provide further insight into cooperatively breeding raptors, I evaluated sociality in Harris's hawks through the dual benefits framework. I explored the formation, structure, and stability of cooperative group formation across a spatially variable study area, which includes high levels of urbanization and development as well as remote, undisturbed native habitats with low anthropogenic impact. I used color banding, regular censuses of active territories, and a microsatellite relatedness analysis to examine patterns of sociality, including delayed dispersal, the effect of auxiliary group members on reproductive output, parentage of broods, and the relatedness of auxiliaries compared to the nestlings in their territories. I confirmed cooperative polygamy with genetic techniques for the first time in Harris's hawks and found 58% of juvenile hawks delayed dispersal for at least 6 mo. Using the dual benefits framework, I found social associations that formed through delayed dispersal followed predictions for resource-defense benefits, but sociality among mature non-related hawks more closely followed predictions associated with collective action benefits, specifically reproductive output was significantly …

Studies on the Fibrinolytic Pathway in Zebrafish

Fibrinolysis pathway is an important mechanism for dissolution of fibrin clot by the action of plasmin which is formed from plasminogen, a zymogen via the action of plasminogen activators, i.e. tissue plasminogen activator and urinary plasminogen activator. The regulation of fibrinolysis system in vivo is maintained by plasminogen activators and natural inhibitors i.e. α2-antiplasmin, α2-macroglobulin, Thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 and 2 (PAI-1and PAI-2). There are several fibrinolytic assays developed for human plasma but there are no reports describing fibrinolytic assay using zebrafish plasma. In this study, a fibrinolytic assay via using small amount of zebrafish plasma was developed. This assay was performed under different conditions; one by the addition of exogenous tissue plasminogen activator alone to the pooled zebrafish plasma along with calcium chloride and thromboplastin, second Dade ACTIN was used instead of tissue plasminogen activator and third Dade ACTIN along with thromboplastin was used. Epsilon amino caproic acid (EACA), a synthetic antifibrinolytic agent was used at different concentrations to inhibit fibrinolysis successfully.
