A History of Concert Waltzes for Piano (Lecture-Recital) Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by Rachmaninov, Stravinsky, Schubert, J.S. Bach, Reger, Adams, Covino, Chopin, Schönberg, Ives, and Beethoven

The first three recitals contained solely performances of piano music. The first one consisted of an Etude-Tableau by Rachmaninov, the Capriccio by Stravinsky (the chamberensemble accompaniment arranged for second piano), and the great Sonata in A minor by Schubert. The second recital contained a Prelude and Fugue by J. S. Bach, Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Bach, a Romance by the performer, Peter Covino's Toccatina Op. 4 No. 8, and Chopin's Nocturne Op. 55 No. 2 and Scherzo in E. The third recital consisted of Schonberg's Sechs Kleine Klavierstilcke, Ives's Some South-Paw Pitching, and the Sonata Op. 106 ("Hammerklavier") by Beethoven. The fourth recital featured a lecture which surveyed the piano waltz throughout its history. Several complete examples, namely Weber's Invitation to the Dance, Chopin's Waltz in A minor, and La Valse by Ravel, and incomplete examples including a Lundler by the performer, several of Schubert's waltzes, Chopin's Waltz Op. 42, and Man Lebt Nur Einmal! by Strauss-Tausig interspersed the lecture. All four recitals, tape-recorded, and the lecture, typewritten, are filed together in the Graduate Office of the North Texas State University.

A Comparison of Two Models for Training Personnel for Teaching the Moderately and Severely Retarded

The problem of this study is the effect of two training models on personnel who teach moderately and severely retarded children. The subjects of this study were sixty-two staff members who work with the moderately and severely retarded pupils in two large metropolitan school systems. Eighteen teachers, eighteen aides, and twenty-six volunteers participated in the study. Two observation instruments administered by trained observers were used as pre- and post-tests to measure the trainees' competencies in applying operant conditioning techniques in both group and one-to-one instructional situations. The purposes of this study were (1) to compare the effectiveness of an experiential model and a didactic model in preparing personnel to deliver cues and reinforcers when working with moderately and severely retarded children; (2) to compare the costs of equipment and supervisory personnel; and (3) to examine the relationship between the trainees' effectiveness of delivering cues and reinforcers to a group of moderately and severely retarded youngsters and the on-task behavior of those students. A Study of Female Employees' Responses on an Attitude Survey

This study was conducted to clarify the use of an annual attitude survey by a certain company, as it relates to that company's female employees. In previous surveys using the Job Descriptive Index, it was noted that the scatter of scores about the mean for the satisfaction with Work, Pay, Promotion, Supervisor, and Co-workers sub-tests was much greater for the females than for the males. It was postulated that the female group might be composed of two or more definable subgroups which had statistically different means. It was also shown that for satisfaction with supervisor, whites had higher satisfaction than blacks. On satisfaction with promotion, persons twenty-five years or younger scored higher than did those who were fifty-five and older, and then those who were from twenty-five to thirty-four years old. All of the above differences were statistically significant at the p < .05 level. No statistically significant differences were found in groups stratified by having dependents, or by tenure. The primary hypothesis was accepted. No subsidiary hypothesis was found acceptable by this study.

A Study of the Role of Staff Development Trainer in Organizations

This investigation examines the differences in perception of the role of staff-development trainer in organizations, a role identified as an emerging occupation, held by three professional groups. The focus is on sources of stress and strain in the job performance of the trainer. Purposes of the study are (1) to collect data from three coworker groups, administrators, directors of nursing, and trainers relative to the role of the trainer, (2) to examine differences in perception between the groups, (3) to examine the differences as potential sources of stress when viewed from the perspective of role theory, and (4) to delineate the role. This study indicates that knowledge about behavioral sciences and skill at interpersonal communications are important areas in both background and in personal qualities needed. Nurses and trainers widely perceive a lack of commitment to training by administrators. This relates to sources of strain in the role of trainer. There is a generally held expectation in the field that the role will grow in importance and scope.

The problem with which this study was concerned was that of determining some of the ways and to what extent Texas upper-level universities in their academic units and the individual university as a whole have uniquely met the needs of public higher education in Texas. It was concluded that upper-level universities are fulfilling their roles in innovative/experimental programs. However, as a group upper-level universities are not advancing any more rapidly toward meeting their initial goals and purposes than the four-year universities.

A Study of Due Process Appeal Cases Involving Professional Personnel Coming Before the State Commissioner of Education for the Period of Time 1970-1975 and the Impact of These Cases upon School District Operations in Texas

This study sought to review the due process appeal cases that came before the Texas State Commissioner of Education from 1970 to 1975 in order to determine the impact of the decision upon school districts' management and operation. Five purposes directed this study and are as follows: (a) to review the cases appealed to the State Commissioner from 1970 to 1975, (b) to develop a cross reference for cataloging these decisions, (c) to develop a handbook on reference materials for local administrative use, (d) to outline a special procedure for orderly due process, and (e) to determine the impact of these decisions rendered to concerning local school district policy. These five purposes were attained through a research design combining historical research methodology with survey research methodology. In conclusion, negligible impact was observed on school districts as a result of due process appeal cases. No school board changed policy as a result of the commissioner's decision. In summary, the five purposes were met. Attaining these five purposes produced the following, which are contained in the report: (a) a Cross-reference Matrix for cataloging decisions, (b) an Administrative Due Process Handbook containing case briefs, (c) a procedure for orderly due process, and (d) …

An Analytical Study of the Recommendations of Early Childhood Education Authorities with Regard to the Role of the Public Library in Serving Children from Infancy to Six Years of Age

This study investigated the role of the public library in serving children from infancy to age six. The purposes of this research were to obtain recommendations from early childhood education authorities pertaining to the areas of services, programs, materials, physical facilities, and personnel and to utilize these data in the development of guidelines for public libraries. Findings revealed that the majority recommended utilization of volunteers and of early childhood education consultant; preparation of children's librarians in working with adults and young children; provision of services and programs focusing on parent education, led by specialists; preparation of child care personnel in storytelling; programs involving parent and child participation; coordination of public library efforts with those of other community agencies in order to avoid duplication; and services, programs, materials, and physical facilities which facilitate and encourage interest in books and which relate to reading. The minority recommended services, materials, and physical facilities which focus on unstructured recreational play; and services, programs, and materials which focus on formal teaching or testing in cognitive areas.

Child Rearing Attitudes, Perceived Parental Behavior Patterns, and Learning Disabilities in Adoptive and Natural Families

The problem of this study is to investigate the differences in perceived parental behavior patterns, child rearing attitudes, and learning disabilities in natural and adoptive families. The purposes of this study are to compare the child rearing attitudes of adoptive and natural parents, to compare the child's perception of parental behavior in adoptive and natural families, to discover if the two groups differ in their ability to predict their children's perceptions of parental behavior, and to investigate the incidence of learning disabilities among adoptive children. Findings indicate that significant differences exist between natural and adoptive parents as measured by the PAS and the CRPBI-R. Adoptive fathers are not as likely as natural fathers to feel it is impossible to change a child from his already determined way of behaving and believe parental or environmental influences to be more important than natural or inherent causations. The younger the child was at the time of adoption, the better the adoptive parents were able to predict what the child would report about parental discipline. Adoptive parents are also found to be more accepting of childhood behaviors and feelings and have more mutual trust and understanding of their children than are natural parents. There …

Principles for Formulating and Evaluating Instructional Claims

The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of developing (a) the concept of instructional claim, and (b) credible principles for instructional claim formulation and evaluation. The belief that these constructions are capable of contributing to the advancement of curricular and instructional research and practice is grounded in three major features. The first feature is that of increased precision of basic concepts and increased coherence among them. The second feature is the deliberate connecting of instructional strategies and goal-states and the connecting of instructional configurations with curricular configurations. The third feature is the introduction of fundamental logical principles as evaluative criteria and the framing of instructional plans in such a way as to be subject to empirical tests under the principles of hypothesis testing that are considered credible in the empirical sciences.

The Identification of Factors Related to Potential Child Abusiveness in Adults

The purposes of this study were to determine if there are differences between the responses of abusive and nonabusive adults to potentially anger-provoking child behaviors; if there are differences between abusive and nonabusive adults; if there are differences between the children of abusive and nonabusive adults; and if there are combinations of these characteristics of the adults and characteristics of children as well as the behaviors of children which relate to child abusiveness in adults. The basic problem was to determine factors that help identify potentially child abusive adults. Certain factors, such as the limited size of the sample and the initial use of a new instrument, served as limitations to broad generalizations. However, based on the analysis of the data of this study, the following conclusions seem tenable 1. Certain behaviors of children are more upsetting to abusive adults than to nonabusive adults. 2. Characteristics of adults are not necessarily related to child abusiveness in adults. 3. The age of the child and the number of children living in the home are significantly related to child abusiveness in adults. 4. The Affective Value of Planetarium-Related Curricula in High-, Middle-, and Low-Achieving Secondary School Students

The problem of this study was to measure the effects of differing curricular patterns involving the use of planetarium centered activities on the affective domain of high-,middle-, and low-achieving secondary school students. Two different curricular patterns were studied. At each achievement level, one group viewed two planetarium lessons in conjunction with their classroom work in astronomy. Also, at each achievement level, two groups viewed the planetarium lessons as review activities which followed their completion of classroom work in astronomy earlier in the school year. The following conclusions were made with respect to the planetarium-related curricula studied. 1. Two exposures to planetarium lessons as a review activity caused a significant decline in the attitude toward astronomy among high-achieving students. 2. Two exposures to planetarium lessons did not significantly improve students' attitudes toward astronomy at any achievement level or with either curricular pattern studied. 3. Middle- and low-achieving students' attitudes were not significantly affected by two exposures to the planetarium lessons. Varying the manner of employing the planetarium in relation to classroom work in astronomy, in the manner studied, made no significant differences in the attitudes of students at either of these achievement levels.

An Affective-Cognitive Group Counseling Procedure for Use with Parents of Handicapped Children: A Comparative Study of its Effectiveness for Changing Attitudes and Training Parents in a Method of Child Guidance

This study concerned the paucity of group counseling procedures designed specifically for use with parents of handicapped children. Purposes of the study were- (1) design of an affective-cognitive group counseling procedure, (2) investigation of affective-cognitive group counseling procedural effects with parents of handicapped children, (3) determination of procedural effects in a. changing the intra- and interpersonal attitudes of parents, b. increasing parents' knowledge of Positive Behavior Management, and (4) determining comparative procedure effects. Four research hypotheses related to the efficacy of the affective-cognitive group counseling procedure were formulated and tested at the .05 level of confidence. Statistical analysis of data indicated that parents participating in the affective-cognitive group counseling procedure did not achieve significantly higher posttest mean scores on the Acceptance of Self and Others test or in the five areas of the Parent Attitude Survey Scale than did parents participating in the affective, cognitive, or control group. Data did reveal that parents participating in the cognitive group did achieve significantly higher adjusted posttest mean scores on the Positive Behavior Management Assessment than did parents participating in the affective-cognitive, affective, or control group. Time-sharing computer systems permit large numbers of users to operate on common sets of data and programs. Since certain parts of these computer resources may be sensitive or proprietary, there exists the risks that information belonging to one user, may, contrary to his intent, become available to other users, and there is the additional risk that outside agencies may infiltrate the system and obtain information. The question naturally arises of protecting one user's stored program and data against unauthorized access by others.

The scientific subroutine package is one of the most important parts of the software for the scientific industry. By now, most big computers have scientific packages, but applying such a software package in microprocessors requires consideration of the microprocessor's facilities, such as limited main memory, slow execution time, and only a few small registers. In any scientific package, the trigonometric functions are the ones more widely used. This paper discusses a method for implementing several trigonometric function programs in a scientific package in microprocessors. These programs will contain routines for computing sin, cos, tan, and cot of any angle within the range of (-360°,+360°).

This continues throughout one's academic career, with little emphasis placed on experimentation with other metals. During my undergraduate and graduate studies I etched with zinc. I had wanted to use aluminium and magnesium in order to explore the similar and dissimilar qualities of the three.

An Investigation of the Sculptural Possibilities of Warp Distortion and Manipulation Through Warp Weighting

The purpose of this project is to investigate the sculptural possibilities of warp distortion and manipulation through the utilization of the weighted-warp process. A secondary purpose is to explore the technique of warp weighting beyond a single fabric layer. It is projected that a weighted layer can be combined with one which is tensioned evenly and tied onto the floor loom (loom tensioned). In this manner, the loom-tensioned layer remains stable. The weighted layer is free to move through the heddles while maintaining tension on the warps.

Are the primary colors (red, yellow, blue) in manufactured unaltered fabric more effective than painted or altered fabric? 3. Is there a correlation between the color and imagery in the paper pieces and those of the fabric pieces? 4. Of the project pieces, is there a size that generally appears to be more successful than others?

A Series of Self-Portraits Made In Jewelry Form

The problem consisted of creating a series of jewelry pieces in metal which embody the concept of a self-portrait. Each piece in the series has a physical outside and an inside area in its structure which together form a conceptual self-portrait. Each piece was partly preplanned in detail and partly spontaneously executed. The spontaneously executed parts of the individual pieces serve to include the presence of the subconscious self-image. The series when viewed as a whole or as individual parts will give an insight to my self-image.

How complex a design can be executed by the laminating process? 2. How close to the design will the initial lamination be? 3. What are the best methods of lamination for each process: types of clamps, types of wood, types of glue, dowels and weights? 4. How successful may these lamination techniques be combined? 5. As the work was in progress, which became more important-- the surface quality or the form? 6. Will laminated forms remain stable?
