An Acoustical Comparison of the Tones Produced by Clarinets Constructed of Different Materials (open access)

An Acoustical Comparison of the Tones Produced by Clarinets Constructed of Different Materials

In music education today there is a trend toward a greater understanding of the fundamentals of music. Investigations have been undertaken to determine exactly what a musical tone is made of and why individuals respond to it in certain ways. In all fields these endeavors have led to an objective view of what has been primarily a subjective area. A knowledge of why something happens or of a relationship between factors in a situation is always of ultimate value in teaching situations. In this light many studies have been done concerning musical tone analysis, and particularly, clarinet tone analysis. The clarinet has been the center of tone analysis for some thirty-five years, perhaps because it is an acoustical enigma, or perhaps because there are more clarinetists interested in analyzing their instrument. In any case, analyses have been performed dealing with characteristic partial spectrums, design of the bore in relation to the tone, effect of the reed on tone, effect of the player on tone, and comparisons of tones produced by clarinets made of various substances. This paper deals with the latter of these topics: comparisons of tones produced by clarinets made of various substances. The object of this research is …

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception (open access)

The Effects of Group Counseling upon Visual Perception and its Relationship to Other Forms of Perception

The study of perception of visual images and the influence of counseling upon them has received little if any attention. This study was designed to investigate this uncharted area and to demonstrate the effects of counseling upon visual perception. The primary function of this investigation was to seek answers to the following questions. Is it possible for group counseling to have an effect on one's perception of visual stimuli? Will a counseling experience which produces a change in a person' behavior also cause that person to perceive visual images in a different way than he perceived them before counseling? In other words, does a concomitant relationship exist between visual perception and other forms of perception?

Algebraic Integers (open access)

Algebraic Integers

The primary purpose of this thesis is to give a substantial generalization of the set of integers Z, where particular emphasis is given to number theoretic questions such as that of unique factorization. The origin of the thesis came from a study of a special case of generalized integers called the Gaussian Integers, namely the set of all complex numbers in the form n + mi, for m,n in Z. The main generalization involves what are called algebraic integers.

The Political Potential of the Negro in Houston, Texas (open access)

The Political Potential of the Negro in Houston, Texas

"The major problem that motivated this study is the fact the Negro in Houston, 1969 does not have any real political power although the potential for such power exists. The major purpose of this study is to seek answers to the following questions. First does the Houston Negro have any real political potential under the present system; if he does, what can he do with it? Second, why are there such wide gaps between the number of Negroes who are eligible to vote and the number that registered to vote and between those who registered and those who actually voted in Houston? The third question is in what election has the Houston Negro demonstrated his greatest political interest and why? And finally, is the politics of Houston based on race or economics?" -- leaf v.
