Investigations on Abundance, Habits, and Distribution of Amphibians and Reptiles of Denton County, Texas (open access)

Investigations on Abundance, Habits, and Distribution of Amphibians and Reptiles of Denton County, Texas

The purpose of the present study of the herpetofauna was to obtain additional information regarding the vertebrates of Denton County, and to produce a well-preserved, cataloged collection of the amphibians and reptiles for the Museum of Zoology, North Texas State University. An understanding of the vertebrate life of the county also involves an investigation of the habitats within the county that may, in part, count for the distribution of these animals. It is well recognized that the environmental areas of the county have altered vastly during the last one hundred years. This alteration is due largely to agriculture and industry. However, there are adequate numbers of natural environments, as well as newly created ones that may contribute to the distribution of the vertebrates at the present time. Therefore, the problem not only concerned the collection of specimens, but also the identification, abundance classification, general habitat classifications, and county distribution.

The Unaccompanied Choral Music of Felix Mendelssohn (open access)

The Unaccompanied Choral Music of Felix Mendelssohn

The purpose of this study was to analyze for reasons of interpretation the unaccompanied choral music of Felix Mendelssohn. What comparisons and conclusions based on the analyses can be made concerning the character of compositional style in Felix Mendelssohn's unaccompanied choral music? What conclusions can be made concerning the interpretation of Felix Mendelssohn's unaccompanied choral music based on the compositional style of his music and an understanding of his musical attributes?

Comparable Dissonance as Used by Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria in Three Masses (open access)

Comparable Dissonance as Used by Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria in Three Masses

The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of the comparable use of dissonance of Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria through harmonic analysis and statistical comparison, illustrating the stylistic differences among the three composers works. The thesis does. not attempt to cover text setting, melodic construction, ranges, or aesthetic evaluation of composition other than that which pertains to dissonance. The analysis of dissonance was done with primary consideration being given to the vertical structure of the harmony, observing the linear structure only with relation to the approach and resolution of that dissonance.

A Study of Rorschach Intellectual Indicators in Adolescents (open access)

A Study of Rorschach Intellectual Indicators in Adolescents

There seems to be a need for further exploration in this area for the purpose of clarifying which Rorschach indices are indicators of intelligence. R. W. W%, D%, F+%, A%, H, H%, M, and N have each been selected for statistical analysis on the basis of one or more of these three factors: (1) Rorschach, Klopfer and Kelly, and Beck have stated that the index is an indicator of intelligence, (2) extensive definition of the index implies some relation to intelligence, (3) past literature indicates that the index correlates positively with intelligence.

The Occult as a Dramatic Device in Shakespearean Tragedy (open access)

The Occult as a Dramatic Device in Shakespearean Tragedy

What this study will demonstrate is that Shakespeare's use of occult manifestations is not as superficial as it is sometimes said to be. On the contrary, it is the contention of this study that, especially in certain of the major tragedies, occult phenomena are integral to the main action, provide the play with essential motivation, and, in fact, are indispensable to a proper resolution.

Synthesis of Ether-free Organomagnesium Compounds (open access)

Synthesis of Ether-free Organomagnesium Compounds

At the time this work was begun, there was some confusion about the technique necessary for the successful synthesis of organomagnesium compounds in hydrocarbon solvents and without solvents. It was decided to repeat the work of Bryce-Smith and Zakharkin. Thus began the study of the synthesis of organomagnesium compounds without solvents; the study of the reaction products of these organomagnesium compounds in hydrocarbons plus 2-butanone compared to the reaction products of the corresponding etheral Grignard reagent plus 2-butanone; and a preliminary study of the nature of these organomagnesium compounds in hydrocarbon solvents.

Application of the Wigner Formalism to a Slightly Relativistic Quantum Plasma (open access)

Application of the Wigner Formalism to a Slightly Relativistic Quantum Plasma

A slightly relativistic fermion gas is described by the dynamical theory obtained from the Wigner distribution function. The problem is approached in a self-consistent manner including the two-body Darwin Hamiltonian. The goal is to find the departures from equilibrium and dispersion relations for wave propagation in the gas.

A Comparative Analysis of Selected Characteristics of Foster Grandparents Assigned to Criterion Groups on the Bases of Tenure and Supervisor Evaluations

This study was concerned with determining whether those foster grandparents employed at Denton State School and seen as more or less successful in job performance could be differentiated on the basis of selected psychological and sociological characteristics. In summary, it may be said that the study was exploratory in terms of the population involved but borrowed its methods and variables for investigation from studies of similar purpose of groups participating in "helping relationships."

Effects of Varied Intervals of Rest between Warm-Up and Performance on 440-Yard Dash Times (open access)

Effects of Varied Intervals of Rest between Warm-Up and Performance on 440-Yard Dash Times

A comparative study was made of the effects of varied time intervals of rest between warm-up and performance in the 440-yard dash by students in selected physical education classes at North Texas State University during the spring semester of 1967. This study was made to determine if the length of a rest interval after cessation of warm-up activity has any significant effect upon the subsequent performance in a 440-yard dash, and to determine if any length of rest interval facilitates performance in a 440-yard dash.

The City of Denton Computer Installation: A Study of Conversion in a Medium-Sized Municipality

It will be the purpose of this thesis to describe and analyze the events and factors which shaped installation of the first electronic data processing system acquired by the City of Denton, Texas--a "medium-sized" municpal organization operating under the council-manager plan. Because the environment may have some degree of effect upon such an effort within the public sector, a certain amount of space will be given over to description of the community as a geographic location, as an aggregation of people engaged in varied activities, and, by implication, as a background for the operation of a municipal government.

Relationships Between Self-Actualization and Sociometric Status for Adolescents

It was the purpose of this present investigation to display the tentative relationships between self-actualization and sociometric status of adolescent school students. In light of the theoretical and related literature presented, the following hypotheses were posited: 1) students who are high sociometrically will evidence higher personal orientation inventory (POI) means than the middle or low groups on more positive POI scales and 2) students who are low or middle sociometrically will evidence higher POI means than the high group on the major negative POI scales.
