A Study of the Influences Upon Pre-Service Teachers' Pre-Planning, Lesson Planning, and Bases for Interactive Decision Making During Lesson Implementation

The primary objective of this study was to describe the influences upon pre-service elementary teachers' preplanning, lesson planning, and bases for interactive decision making during their lesson implementation. Six female volunteer pre-service elementary teachers from the teacher preparation program at the University of North Texas planned and taught three separate lessons in one of the following content areas-social studies, language arts, mathematics, science, and safety, at six different schools in the north Texas area. Each element of the lesson plans (18 total) was classified for analysis. Following the presentation of each lesson, the pre-service teachers were asked to use the repertory-grid technique to sort out five decisions from a series of lesson-implementation decisions which had been observed and recorded by the investigator. Then the six pre-service teachers were interviewed by the investigator using the stimulated recall technique. During the interview, each decision was discussed with the pre-service teachers, who responded to seven structural questions that probed their concerns, attitude, type of concerns, and number of concerns. The six pre-service elementary teachers possessed some ability to direct students in their classroom learning using activities and instructional knowledge. This enabled them to notice individual student performance and that of students in the …

Stylistic and Technical Considerations for Pedaling the Debussy Preludes, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L. van Beethoven, A. Berg, J. Brahms, F. Chopin, C. Debussy, W.A. Mozart, S. Prokofieff, A. Schoenberg, F. Schubert, and R. Schumann (open access)

Stylistic and Technical Considerations for Pedaling the Debussy Preludes, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L. van Beethoven, A. Berg, J. Brahms, F. Chopin, C. Debussy, W.A. Mozart, S. Prokofieff, A. Schoenberg, F. Schubert, and R. Schumann

The lecture recital was given November 6, 1989. Five Preludes by Claude Debussy were preformed following a lecture on some important considerations of approaching the pedaling complexities in his solo piano works. In addition to the lecture recital, three other solo piano recitals were performed. The first solo recital consisted of works by Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, and was performed on November 17, 1980. On March 1, 1982, the second solo recital was presented. This performance consisted of works by J. Brahms, W.A. Mozart, S. Prokofieff, and A. Schoenberg. The third solo recital was performed on November 21, 1988 and included the works of L. van Beethoven. A. Berg, F. Chopin, and C. Debussy. The four programs were recorded on tape and filed with the written version of the lecture as part of the dissertation.

Suicide: a Solo Interpretation Performance (open access)

Suicide: a Solo Interpretation Performance

The purpose of this project was to determine if oral interpretation in a social context setting can be used as a persuasive means of suicide prevention. A script on suicide was compiled, directed and performed as a solo performance by the writer. The thesis includes the script, a history of suicide prevention, the process of compiling a script for solo interpretation performance, and an overall evaluation of the production. This Author's evaluation was influenced by audience and critic responses.

Symphonic Poem "New Life" for Orchestra and Yang-Chin (open access)

Symphonic Poem "New Life" for Orchestra and Yang-Chin

Symphonic Poem New Life is a composition in one movement for orchestra and yang-chin. The work is divided into six continuous sections. It is written in resultant form which is a cumulative process by which all major musical elements return at the end of the work. The tritone is the prominent interval used throughout the piece. Some graphic notation is also employed. The work has a performance time of approximately 13-15 minutes. The yang-chin is a Chinese string instrument similar to the Hungarian cymbalon, which is played with a pair of small beaters. These instruments have similar ranges, and either instrument can be used in this work.

Syntheses and Structures of Substituted Polycyclic Molecules and Analysis of the Two-Dimensional NMR Spectrum of Thiele's Ester

Diels-Alder cycloaddition of methylcyclopentadienes to 2,5-dibromo-p-benzoquinone was performed. A single, isomerically pure cycloadduct was isolated, whose structure was assigned via analysis of its 1-D and 2-D NMR spectra. Diels-Alder cycloaddition of methylcyclopentadienes to 2 -methoxy-p-benzoquinone was performed. A single, isomerically pure cycloadduct was isolated, whose structure was assigned via analysis of the 1-D and 2-D NMR spectra of this cycloadduct and its reduction product obtained via stereo-specific reduction with sodium borohydride in the presence of cerous chloride. The structure of Thiele's ester was assigned via analysis of its 1-D and 2-D NMR spectra.

Synthesis, Structure, and Solution Dynamics of Co₄(CO)₈(dmpe)(mu₄-PPh)₂ (open access)

Synthesis, Structure, and Solution Dynamics of Co₄(CO)₈(dmpe)(mu₄-PPh)₂

Reaction of the tetracobalt cluster Co4(CO)10(t 4-PPh)2 with 1,2-bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe) affords the bis-substituted cluster Co4(CO)8(dmpe)(t 4-PPh)2. The bidentate dmpe ligand is shown to bind to the cluster in a chelating fashion by IR, NMR, and X-ray diffractions analyses. The fluxional nature of the ancillary carbonyl groups has been studied by variable temperature 13C NMR measurements which reveal two distinct carbonyl scrambling pathways. The stability of the phosphine-ligated cluster has been examined using in situ Cylindrical Internal Reflection (CIR) Spectroscopy. The effect of the dmpe ligand on the cluster polyhedron will be discussed with respect to the observed crystallographic and spectroscopic results

Toxicity of Chromium and Fluoranthene From Aqueous and Sediment Sources to Selected Freshwater Fish (open access)

Toxicity of Chromium and Fluoranthene From Aqueous and Sediment Sources to Selected Freshwater Fish

Research efforts in aquatic toxicology have historically centered on the chemical analyses and toxic effects of waters to aquatic organisms. More recently, sediment-source toxicity has been explored, with efforts concentrated on establishing sensitive and accurate methodologies. This study focused on the toxicity of trivalent chromium, hexavalent chromium, and fluoranthene to Pimephales promelas, Ictalurus punctatus, and Lepomis macrochirus. Test fish were exposed to both water-borne and sediment-source toxicants for 96 hours (h) and 30 days (d). A 96-h and 30-d LC50 (mg/L Cr, ug/L Fluoranthene) was determined for each fish species exposed to aqueous toxicants. In addition, 96-h and 30-d LC50s were determined for each fish species from sediment chromium concentrations (mg/kg) and sediment fluoranthene concentrations (ug/kg). Although lethality endpoints were used throughout this research, acute effects other than mortality were determined for Lepomis macrochirus exposed to hexavalent chromium. Lethal toxicity values (96-h and 30-d LC50 and their 95% confidence limits) for trivalent chromium could not be determined since trivalent chromium concentations above 6.0 mg/L could not be obtained at water pHs compatible with these fish species. Trivalent chromium addition to test waters at pHs compatible with fish survival resulted in a chromium precipitate that was not lethal to test fish. …

Validation of a Test Battery for the Selection of Driver Managers in a Trucking Organization (open access)

Validation of a Test Battery for the Selection of Driver Managers in a Trucking Organization

This study was a concurrent validation of a paper and pencil test battery used at a national trucking company. Forty-eight driver managers were rated by their immediate supervisors with the performance appraisal covering 12 dimensions of job behavior that was developed by the experimenter. The driver managers were also administered the Wesman Personnel Classification Test, the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, and the California Psychological Inventory (CPI). A biographical information blank was also developed and validated. Most validity correlations were nonsignificant, with the exception of the Dominance scale r = .25 (p < .05), the Self-control scale r = -.25 (p < .05), the Communanlity scale r = .29 (p < .05), and the Flexibility scale r = -.39 (p < .05), with overall performance.
