Cēgə Trouhèst (open access)

Cēgə Trouhèst

Cēgə Trouhèst is a three-movement work of about thirteen minutes duration. The text by the composer provides a vehicle for aural stimulation only. Cēgə Trouhèst is a continuum of resonances embellished by melodic and rhythmic passages. These embellishments along with other devices and the choice of instrumentation all contribute to the development of the varied timbres. The first two movements introduce the material to be employed in the third, which continues the idea of change exhibited in the text by modification and extraction. Timbre is the most important aspect of this work. It is exploited homophonically, contrapuntally, and through instrumental/vocal interchange and timbre modification of a single tone.

New York City: A Collage of Cultures (open access)

New York City: A Collage of Cultures

New York City: A Collage of Cultures is a single-movement programmatic orchestral work that features polytonality, prallelism, sound-mass, micro-tones, polychordal rhythmic ostinato, neo-impressionism, and folk themes and anthems from sundry cultures and nationalities. The simultaneity of contextual material at one point necessitates the employment of three conductors. The composition portrays America as a "melting pot" through its busiest immigration center, itself a microcosm of diverse international elements. This is achieved by the depiction of three different settings: a boat sailing from a foreign port, bound for New York Cty; New York itself in all of its awesome fury; and a capsule image of a conglomerate of turn-of-the-century emigrants and their interaction throughout the voyage.

Ritual, Sermon, and Prophecy for Bass and Orchestra (open access)

Ritual, Sermon, and Prophecy for Bass and Orchestra

This composition is a symphonic setting of three original poems within the confines of an expanded sonata-allegro form and is an approximately twenty-two minutes in duration. The three poems are designed with certain cyclic implications which are related formally to the recurrence of musical ideas. The main application of this plan is found in the duality of formal roles assigned to each of the three major sectional divisions of the work. This is an expanded sonata-allegro, but each section (exposition, development, and recapitulation) is enlarged and individualized to the point of becoming a complete movement in itself. Each is intended to have the internal formal capacity to stand alone and at the same time serve as a section part of the whole. Formal unity is established without excessive dependence upon the poems, as both the music and the texts are formally evolved from the principles of sonata-allegro procedures. The poems were written specifically for this musical setting by the composer and are as an integral part of the compositional process itself; however, the poetry is didactic in purpose and is something of a jeremiad. Each poem relates principally to one of three aspects of existence: a ritual of history, a …

The Cycle of Life Symphony (open access)

The Cycle of Life Symphony

This symphony is a representation of the composer's philosophy of life, which includes a belief in a pre-existent life (Beginnings), a mortal life (Searchings and Wanderings), and a life after death (Return Home). Three out of four of the cyclic elements in the Symphony are symbolic. Theme one represents the influence for good which emanates from a living God; motive one represents the influence for evil, or the Devil; motive two represents the influence of Christ. All three of these influences were present in the pre-existence, they are present in earth life and in the life after death, where good will ultimately triumph over evil. Motive three is found in both first and third movements, but has no symbolic meaning.

Hegira

Hegira is a work for full orchestra making use of piano as well as an augmented percussion section. The title, taken from Mohammed's flight to Mecca in 622 A.D., did suggest certain directions during the compositional process, but it does not imply a specific program for the music. The compositional process employed many techniques, including thematic transformation, serialization, rotation, contrapuntal textures, as well as the intuitive juxtaposition of material.

Introspections :a Composition for String Quartet

The title is intended to suggest that the work expresses the composer's innermost thoughts and feelings, even though these thoughts and feelings have no concrete realizations or programmatic connotations. It is precisely because of their abstractness that the thoughts and feelings are expressed in music rather than in words or some other concrete mode of communication. The total performance time is approximately twenty minute. The individual movements last about ten, four and one-half and five and one-half minutes, respectively.

Serenade for Viola and Orchestra (open access)

Serenade for Viola and Orchestra

The Serenade for Viola and Orchestra is a one-movement composition of three connecting sections with two main themes of contrasting character. The "relatedness" of the sections does not depend on common thematic material, but rather on a system whereby motives evolve out of the thematic material and from elements in preceding sections. The sonorous timbre of the viola is exploited and becomes the central tessitura for the piece. The title is representative of the lyrical nature of the composition as a whole, especially the first and third section.

Symphony Number Five

Symphony Number Five is a composition in three movements for orchestra. It is characterized by an economy of materials and a clarity of presentation of those materials. Further, the materials are expressed in a simplistic manner which avoids intricate textural content and complex melodic and harmonic structures. The symphony was chosen as a pattern of structure for this composition since it represents a microcosm of the history and development of musical style since 1760.

The Marginality, Social Class, and Goal Orientations of American Indian Migrants in Fort Worth, Texas (open access)

The Marginality, Social Class, and Goal Orientations of American Indian Migrants in Fort Worth, Texas

The concepts of marginality, social class, and goal-orientation were operationally defined. The relationships between these concepts were explored in order to discern their utility in describing the marginal conditions of Indian migrants to an urban area. Marginality was found to be reflected by the extent of identification of Indian migrants with the urban community. Marginal conditions were also more closely linked to social class than goal orientations of parents. Differences in the types of marginality experienced are related to the length of residence in the urban area.

The Overtures of Samuel Wesley

Born into one of the most distinguished families in eighteenth-century England, Samuel Wesley (1766-1837) distinguished himself as a child prodigy, an ardent devotee of the music of J. S. Bach, and as a composer, performer and music lecturer. His four extant overtures, written from the year 1778 to 1824, offer an insight into his development as a composer. This edition, drawn from the Wesley manuscripts housed in the British Library, is preceded by a commentary dealing with Wesley's life, the history of the overture as an independent for, and with Wesley's place in the history of English instrumental music.

Testing the Significance in Predictability Between Multiple Sets of Variables Differing in Number on Job Facet Satisfactions and Performance Rating of Supervisors and Technicians in a Large Public Utility Company (open access)

Testing the Significance in Predictability Between Multiple Sets of Variables Differing in Number on Job Facet Satisfactions and Performance Rating of Supervisors and Technicians in a Large Public Utility Company

This study tests whether criteria variance in five job-facet satisfactions and performance rating explained by selected demographic and personality variables is significantly greater than by the selected demographic variables. This study offers a useful procedure for treating job-satisfaction data and predictor variables and measures the significance in predictability between criteria variance accounted for by variables not generally found in personnel files and those usually found there. It was found that job satisfactions and performance rating differ both in terms of predictability and functional relationships with Predictor Sets.
