The Development of a Personal Aesthetic Through the Melding of Functional and Sculptural Philosophies (open access)

The Development of a Personal Aesthetic Through the Melding of Functional and Sculptural Philosophies

In this body of work I have attempted to unify those aspects of utilitarian pottery and sculptural ceramics which I value most. I intended to join the inherent interactive nature of pottery with the capacity of sculptural ceramics to convey content through a personal aesthetic. Through this exploration I have developed a stronger personal expression in clay.

Validation of The Physical Activity Interview With Third and Fifth Grade Children (open access)

Validation of The Physical Activity Interview With Third and Fifth Grade Children

This study investigated the validity of the Physical Activity Interview (PAI) for assessing children's self-reported physical activity. Third and fifth graders wore an accelerometer and were interviewed using the PAI to determine 12-hour recall accuracy for activity expressed as energy expenditure (EE). Caltrac estimates of EE for the 12-hour day (12-HEE) and activity EE were the validation criteria. 12-HEE correlations were significant (p<.001) between Caltrac and PAI for third (r=.79) and fifth grade (r=.80). Caltrac and PAI Total Activity were significant for fifth grade (r=.82, p<.001) but not for third grade (r=.36, p<.021). Analysis of tertiles based on the Caltrac demonstrated that the PAI significantly (p<.002) discriminated between activity levels for fifth graders but not for third. The use of PAI may be age-dependent.

An examination of musical-textual relationships in the choral music of Colin Brumby: a lecture recital, with three recitals of selected works by Bartók, Duruflé-Chevalier, Duson, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Sallinen, and Schoenberg (open access)

An examination of musical-textual relationships in the choral music of Colin Brumby: a lecture recital, with three recitals of selected works by Bartók, Duruflé-Chevalier, Duson, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Sallinen, and Schoenberg

The purpose of this study is to investigate the choral works of Colin Brumby, with a special focus on the musical-textual relationships of selected works from his body of choral compositions, which number more than one hundred and twenty. This investigation includes information gathered in Australia at the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and the Australian Music Centre, as well as information furnished in a personal interview with the composer in Brisbane, Australia, in June 1994, in addition to an August 1994 telephone interview cnducted with Thomas Shapcott, the Australian poet with whom Brumby collaberated on over twenty choral compositions.

Mechanisms of rapid receptive field reorganization (open access)

Mechanisms of rapid receptive field reorganization

Rapid receptive field (RF) reorganization of somatosensory neurons in the cat dorsal column nuclei (DCN) was studied using electrophysiological and histological methods. Soon after denervation of the peripheral RF by lidocaine injection, every DCN neuron tested exhibited a reorganized RF.

Was Ist Silvia? Englanderin Oder Deutsche? Restoring the Orignial English Texts to Songs Schubert Set in Translation, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of H. Purcell, G. F. Handel, W. A. Mozart, F. Schubert, J. Brahms, H. Wolf, F. Poulenc and Others (open access)

Was Ist Silvia? Englanderin Oder Deutsche? Restoring the Orignial English Texts to Songs Schubert Set in Translation, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of H. Purcell, G. F. Handel, W. A. Mozart, F. Schubert, J. Brahms, H. Wolf, F. Poulenc and Others

Because of the lack of information concerning the success or failure of Schubert's bilingual edition and concerning the relationship between the English texts and Schubert's settings, most performers take the conservative route of performing both the songs from Lady of the Lake and the rest of Schubert's English song repertoire only with the German translations. Because of the desirability of performing this repertoire in English for English-speaking audiences, this study examines all of the English songs of Schubert to determine whether the original poems can be successfully substituted for the German translations. Editions of the settings that can be effectively performed with the English texts are included in the appendix, in order to make available editions which reflect Schubert's ambition to make his songs easily accessible to non-German-speaking audiences.

A Laboratory Study of the Asiatic Clam (Corbicula fluminea Müller) as Influenced by Substrate, Food Source and Water Type (open access)

A Laboratory Study of the Asiatic Clam (Corbicula fluminea Müller) as Influenced by Substrate, Food Source and Water Type

Growth of Corbicula fluminea was monitored in the laboratory. Three experiments were conducted. Experiment I utilized three substrates and one food type. Experiment II utilized three substrates and two food types. Experiments I and II were conducted to determine if substrate type or food type effected growth. Experiment III used no substrates, one food type and was conducted to determine growth response to different types of water. Clams were maintained in three substrates: sand, gravel and clay. Clams were also maintained without substrate. Growth was monitored by measuring shell length (mm) and recording the weight (mg) of clams over a period of thirty days. At the end of the test period data were evaluated for normality and homogeneity.

Diagnosing Learner Deficiencies in Algorithmic Reasoning (open access)

Diagnosing Learner Deficiencies in Algorithmic Reasoning

It is hypothesized that useful diagnostic information can reside in the wrong answers of multiple-choice tests, and that properly designed distractors can yield indications of misinformation and missing information in algorithmic reasoning on the part of the test taker. In addition to summarizing the literature regarding diagnostic research as opposed to scoring research, this study proposes a methodology for analyzing test results and compares the findings with those from the research of Birenbaum and Tatsuoka and others. The proposed method identifies the conditions of misinformation and missing information, and it contains a statistical compensation for careless errors. Strengths and weaknesses of the method are explored, and suggestions for further research are offered.
