Psychoimmunological Aspects of Anger: T-cell Correlates (open access)

Psychoimmunological Aspects of Anger: T-cell Correlates

Immunological correlates of anger conditions were investigated. Participants were 33 females and 36 males, ranging from 25 to 55 years old. Percentages of total T-lymphocytes, suppressor-T, helper-T, and ratio of helper-T to suppressor-T cells were measured. Differences were found between males and females for Anger Control and Anger Expression. For females, total T-cell percentages correlated with State Anger, Angry Temperament, Anger Out, and the combination of State Anger/Angry Reaction. Suppressor-T cell percentages correlated with State Anger, Trait Anger, Angry Temperament, Anger Out, Anger Expression, and the combination of Angry Temperament/Anger In. Helper-T cells correlated with State Anger, Angry Temperament, Angry Reaction, Anger Out, and Anger Control. Mindbody appears to function in a unified fashion.

An Analysis of Refuse Derived Fuel as an Environmentally Acceptable Fuel Alternative for the Cement Industry (open access)

An Analysis of Refuse Derived Fuel as an Environmentally Acceptable Fuel Alternative for the Cement Industry

Resource recovery is an attractive alternative to the waste disposal problem. The chief by-product of this process, refuse derived fuel (RDF) can be co-fired in traditional coal burning facilities. The cement industry is a potential user of RDF. This study, based on a test burn done at Texas Industries Inc. in Midlothian, Texas, demonstrated the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of using RDF fuel in a cement kiln. Technically, the cement showed no deleterious effects when RDF was substituted for coal/natural gas at 20% by Btu content. Environmentally, acid rain gases were reduced. Economically, RDF was shown to be a cost effective fuel substitute if a resource recovery facility was erected on site.

Chemical Ionization (CI) GC/MS Analysis of Underivatized Amphetamines Followed by Chiral Derivatization to Identify d and l-Isomers with Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry (open access)

Chemical Ionization (CI) GC/MS Analysis of Underivatized Amphetamines Followed by Chiral Derivatization to Identify d and l-Isomers with Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry

An efficient two step procedure has been developed using CI GC/MS for analyzing amphetamines and related compounds. The first step allows the analysis of underivatized amphetamines with the necessary sensitivity and specificity to give spectral identification, including differentiation between methamphetamine and phentermine. The second step involves preparing a chiral derivative of the extract to identify d and 1-isomeric composition.

The Relationship Between Level of Security Clearance and Stress in Engineering and Design Personnel (open access)

The Relationship Between Level of Security Clearance and Stress in Engineering and Design Personnel

The present study investigated the relationship between level of security clearance in engineering occupations and stress. A total of 63 male employees in the field of engineering and design with varying levels of security clearance employed by a large Southwestern defense company participated in the study. Data was obtained utilizing the Engineering Stress Questionnaire which measures sources of stress, work locus of control, social support, job difficulty, job characteristics, perceived stress, and demographic variables. T-tests revealed no statistically significant differences between employees with low security clearances and high security clearances with regard to perceived stress level. However, correlational support was found for hypotheses involving social support, job difficulty, job characteristics, sources of stress, and perceived stress. Path analysis was performed to investigate the impact of variable relationships.

Lay Spirituality in Fourteenth-Century England (open access)

Lay Spirituality in Fourteenth-Century England

In fourteenth-century England, a form of lay spirituality emerged, influenced by the writings and example of the famous mystics, both English and continental, of that period, but much affected by other developments as well. Against the background of socio-economic and political change, the emergence of lay spirituality is examined, with particular emphasis upon continuity and change within the church, the religious instruction of the age, and the spirituality of the English mystics. Finally, the sole surviving written record of lay spirituality of the period, The Book of Margery Kempe, is investigated, along with its author, Margery Kempe - pilgrim, visionary, and aspiring mystic.

Pathologies in Earthworms: Sublethal Biomarkers of Xenobiotic Toxicity (open access)

Pathologies in Earthworms: Sublethal Biomarkers of Xenobiotic Toxicity

This research is part of an overall program to develop and use a suite of acute and sublethal toxicity biomarkers, and testing protocols for use in assaying potential effects of complex mixtures of xenobiotics such as found in soils containing agricultural biocides and petrochemical wastes dredged sediments, and hazardous waste sites (HWS). The purpose of this study was to evaluate four biomarkers of sublethal pathology that could be used in an integrative model of multiple toxicity endpoints with the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris.

In Vitro Studies of the Effects of Hypothermia on Lesioned and Uninjured Mammalian Spinal Cord Neurons

The effects of hypothermia on cultured mammalian (mouse) spinal cord neurons which had been subjected to a defined physical trauma (amputation of a primary dendrite 100μM from the perikaryon) were investigated.

Brain-Reactive Antibodies: Molecular Specificity and Relationship to Biological Aging (open access)

Brain-Reactive Antibodies: Molecular Specificity and Relationship to Biological Aging

Brain-reactive antibodies (BRA) increase in frequency with age in several mammalian species and may be involved in the pathogenesis of age-related dementia. In this experiment, the molecular specificity of BRA in mouse sera was determined using an immunoblot assay, and the relationship of BRA to longevity was studied by comparing the rate of formation of specific BRAs in diet restricted C57BL/6NNia, B6D2F1/NNia, and DBA/2NNia, genotypes which differ markedly in life-span.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of the Stress Protein Response as a Biochemical Water Quality Biomonitoring Method (open access)

Evaluation of the Efficacy of the Stress Protein Response as a Biochemical Water Quality Biomonitoring Method

The stress protein response (SPR) is a conserved and ubiquitous mechanism that enables cells to tolerate a wide variety of environmental insults. This response involves the preferential synthesis of an array of proteins with different molecular weights. These proteins perform a variety of functions, such as protein folding, multimeric protein assembly, steroid receptor binding, and heme catabolism. To evaluate the potential use of the SPR as a biomonitoring tool, a stepwise plan was utilized that proceeded through various physical and chemical laboratory exposures and culminated with a field validation study. The goals of the laboratory exposures were threefold: (1) determine the time required for induction of the SPR; (2) determine the dose-responsiveness of the SPR; and (3) compare the increased syntheses and accumulations of stress proteins to classical toxicological endpoints (i.e. percent mortality, LC50, LC1, etc).
