A Technique for Increasing the Optical Strength of Single-Crystal NaCl and KCl Through Temperature Cycling (open access)

A Technique for Increasing the Optical Strength of Single-Crystal NaCl and KCl Through Temperature Cycling

This thesis relates a technique for increasing the optical strength of NaCl and KCl single-crystal samples. The 1.06-μm pulsed laser damage thresholds were increased by factors as large as 4.6 for a bulk NaCl single-crystal sample. The bulk laser damage breakdown threshold (LDBT) of the crystal was measured prior to and after heat treatment at 800*C using a Nd:YAG laser operating at 1.06 μm. Bulk and surface LDBTs were also studied on samples annealed at 400° C. These samples showed differences in damage morphology on both cleaved and polished surfaces, and the cleaved surfaces had improved damage thresholds. However, neither the polished surfaces nor the bulk showed improved threshold at the lower annealing temperature.

An Empirical Investigation into the Information Content of Financial Accounting Standards Board Statement No. 33 Current Cost Reporting Requirement

The purpose of this study was to determine the informational value of FASB Statement No. 33 current cost disclosures using the analytical technique of industry-wide decomposition analysis. The industry-wide decomposition model was used to measure the informational content of both the historical cost balance sheets (reported in the firm's annual reports) and the current cost balance sheets (prepared from the current cost disclosures) of firms in the Electric Services and Retailers industries. The two measures were then compared to determine the informational value of FASB Statement No. 33 current cost disclosures.

Textile Constructions and their Affect on Personal Imagery (open access)

Textile Constructions and their Affect on Personal Imagery

The problem was to combine yarns and fabrics, through various textile processes, (off-loom and on-loom techniques may be incorporated), that involve a personal dimension and an aesthetic value. The specific questions to be examined were the following: 1. How are successful textural surfaces achieved? 2. What kinds of interdependence among color, surface texture, and imagery exist? 3. How foes scale affect the works? 4. In what ways are autobiographical images compatible with the processes?

The Effects of Perceived Sex-Appropriateness of a Task on Performance of Selected Sports Skills (open access)

The Effects of Perceived Sex-Appropriateness of a Task on Performance of Selected Sports Skills

Recent literature reveals that sex differences in performance actually might be reflections of sex differences in perceptions about the sex-appropriateness and the masculinity and femininity of certain activities. Therefore, this study was designed to determine the effects of perceived sex-appropriateness of a task upon performance of selected sport skills.

Vibrational Dephasing of Haloalkanes and Halobenzenes (open access)

Vibrational Dephasing of Haloalkanes and Halobenzenes

The Raman linewidths of the carbon-halogen stretching mode was measured as a function of temperature in ethyl bromide, isopropyl chloride, isopropyl bromide, t-butyl chloride, t-butyl bromide, chlorobenzene, bromobenzene, iodobenzene and o-dichlorobenzene. The vibrational relaxation times showed a very clear trend. Together with earlier work on methyl iodide, these results provide evidence that the vibrational dephasing efficiencies (T^-1_iso) of the carbon-halogen mode vary in the order of Cl > Br > I. Vibrational dephasing times were calculated from the Fischer-Laubereau Isolated Binary Collision Mode. If further work shows this transferability to extend to other types of skeletal modes in molecular systems, this would have significant ramifications on future vibrational lineshape studies.

A Comparison of PPVT and PPVT-R Scores of Mentally Retarded Adults (open access)

A Comparison of PPVT and PPVT-R Scores of Mentally Retarded Adults

The comparability of PPVT and PPVT-R scores among retarded adults were examined. The sample consisted of 96 clients, who had been previously diagnosed as mildly, moderately, or severely retarded. The PPVT (Form A) and PPVT-R (Form L) were administered to all participants in counter balanced order. Significant correlations were found between the two tests for the total sample as well as for females and males. Additionally, the PPVT-R was found to be capable of discriminating differing levels or retardation. However, with the exception of the severely retarded group, mean PPVT-R Standard Score Equivalent (SSE) scores tended to be approximately 20 points lower than PPVT IQ scores. Some clinical implications of these results were discussed.

Prohibition in Symbol Communication (open access)

Prohibition in Symbol Communication

Literature in semiotics lacks consideration of the elements in symbols that communicate specific concepts. Prohibition was the concept chosen for study. Potential prohibitors were represented by line configurations superimposed on background symbols. Seven prohibitors coupled with symbol backgrounds to form 49 experimental symbols were studied through a symbol inventory. Prohibitors constituted the independent variable, while dependent variables were verbal responses by 105 college students to the experimental symbols. Two hypotheses were tested: a) Prohibitors differ in effectiveness in communicating prohibition and b) Prohibitors differ in frequency of distortion of symbol meaning. Chi square analyses and comparisons of proportions showed diagonal lines most frequently elicited prohibition responses. A chi square analysis displayed no significant relationship between prohibitors in distortion of symbol meaning.

Purification and Studies of Methylglyoxal Reductase from Sheep Liver (open access)

Purification and Studies of Methylglyoxal Reductase from Sheep Liver

The objectives of these investigations were (1) the purification of MG reductase from sheep liver and (2) studies of some of its characteristics. MG reductase was purified 40 fold and showed a single band on SDS-PAGE. Molecular weight estimations with SDS-PAGE showed a molecular weight of 44,000; although gel filtration with Sephadex G-150 gave a molecular weight of 87,000 indicating that the enzyme might be a dimer. The Km for MG is 1.42 mM and for NADH it is 0.04 mM. The pH optimum for the purified enzyme is pH 7.0. Isoelectric focusing experiments showed a pI of 9.3. In vivo experiments involving rats treated with 3,3',5-triiodothyronine (T_3) and 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) indicated that MG reductase was depressed by T_3 and elevated by PTU.

The Effect of Intervalence-Band Absorption, Auger Recombination, Surface Recombination, Diffusion and Carrier Cooling on the Picosecond Dynamics of Laser-Induced Plasmas in Germanium (open access)

The Effect of Intervalence-Band Absorption, Auger Recombination, Surface Recombination, Diffusion and Carrier Cooling on the Picosecond Dynamics of Laser-Induced Plasmas in Germanium

The picosecond optical response of germanium is investigated by performing excitation-probe experiments on a thin, intrinsic-germanium wafer maintained at 135 K. The results of three distinct experiments are reported: (1) the transmission of a single pulse is measured as a function of irradiance, (2) the probe transmission is measured at a fixed time after excitation as a function of the excitation energy, and (3) the transmission of a probe pulse is monitored as a function of time after excitation. These experiments employ 10-picosecond laser pulses at 1.06 um and Stokes-shifted pulses at 1.55-um.

Double Binding Communication: Emotionally Disruptive Effects on College Students (open access)

Double Binding Communication: Emotionally Disruptive Effects on College Students

This study investigated the emotionally disruptive effects of double binding communication, as compared with overtly punitive, and warm, accepting interactions. Forty-two college undergraduates scoring above the mean on the Neuroticism Subscale of Eysenck's Personality Questionaire were each directed to play the part of a small child in a spontaneous role-played family interaction. A pre-post mood test (Multiple Adjective Affect Check List), sensitive to changes in depression, hostility, and anxiety was administered. It was found that subjects in the double-bind and punitive conditions evidenced significant mood disturbance while subjects in the control group did not (all ps < .05). Implications for Double Bind Theory were discussed.

The Effects of Various Types of Preschool-Age Day Care on Later Academic Performance and Conduct in School (open access)

The Effects of Various Types of Preschool-Age Day Care on Later Academic Performance and Conduct in School

Since World War II there has been a "revolutionary" increase in nonparental preschool-age child care. However, the effects of nonparental preschool care remains illusive. In an effort to address some of the limitations of previous research, seven different types of preschool-age care were statistically analyzed. Survey research and available data were gathered on 456 students in a large mid-south metropolitan area. Academic performance was measured by intelligence test scores and report card spelling grades from the sample children's third grade permanent record file. School behavior was measured by the child's conduct score over several years. Fourteen background conditions served as controls.

Separation-Individuation in Female Adult Development (open access)

Separation-Individuation in Female Adult Development

This study examined separation—individuation developmental issues for young adult women, from the perspective of object-relations theory. Its purpose was to explore a woman's perception of her relationship with mother as it is affected by age and request for psychotherapy as well as the relationship between the mother-daughter bond and selfreported personality characteristics. Ninety-six women from 17 to 40 years of age volunteered to participate, and they were grouped into two age ranges. Life Stage 1 women were 17-22 years of age, while Life Stage 2 women ranged from 23-40. Within each Life Stage, the women were further categorized into clinical and non-clinical groups. All of the participants were college students and/or working women from clerical, managerial, and professional occupations who were recruited from their respective schools, jobs and outpatient clinics. Each woman completed the test packet which included a demographic data questionnare; the Identity vis-a-vis Mother Questionnaie (IVM-20) developed by Crastnopol (1980); the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire (CAQ) and Rotter1s Locus of Control Scale. The IVM-20 contains four scales, each designed to measure a unique mother-daughter relationship: Individuated (Ind), Symbiosis (Syra), Practicing (Prac) and Distancing (Dist). Ind is supposed to reflect a healthy autonomy with a loving mother-daughter bond, while Prac …
