Actinoplanes Philippinensis: Effect of Carbon Sources on Zoospore Production (open access)

Actinoplanes Philippinensis: Effect of Carbon Sources on Zoospore Production

Actinomycetes are able to utilize a great variety of carbohydrates, like sugar. The particular kind of sugar and its concentration has decisive effect on the growth of microorganisms. The proper nutritional media aids also in the production of spores. Based on this generalization, that the growth and sporulation of microorganisms are greatly influenced by the nature and the concentration of carbohydrates, an attempt has been made to study Actinoplanes philippinensis with respect to this influence.

Aesthetics in the Popular Culture (open access)

Aesthetics in the Popular Culture

The purpose of this thesis is to consider three opposing statements regarding aesthetics in our popular culture. The first statement is that the youth of this age are demolishing the old standards of aesthetic taste and are creating a nonaesthetic; the second statement is that the youth are enlarging the vision and scope of the accepted standard of aesthetic and changing its direction; the thrid statement is that the creations of the youth in our popular culture of today are neither new nor nonaesthetic, but merely a continuation of aesthetics as they are accepted. One statement will be chosen as the most valid of the three.

The Antihero in the Novels of Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui

Although some of Zunzunegui's works are not so moralistic in intent as others, it will be seen that each one of them criticizes a particular bad trait in the protagonist which leads to unhappiness or defeat, either for the character himself or for someone close to him.

The Bender-Gestalt Test: A Factor Analytic Study of Each Design as it Relates to Various Individual Personality Traits (open access)

The Bender-Gestalt Test: A Factor Analytic Study of Each Design as it Relates to Various Individual Personality Traits

Is it possible that the Bender-Gestalt (B-G) protocol of an individual is complex of many different, discrete, perceptual tests? Is it possible to find the relationships among the scoring factors for the B-G and by factor analysis find some systematic order among the individual designs useful in predicting specific behavioral propensities? If a consistent relationship can be shown to exist between scorable deviations on the B-G designs and certain personality variables among individuals, then perhaps a start can be made toward predictive validity of the B-G.

Choral Problems in Handel's Messiah (open access)

Choral Problems in Handel's Messiah

The purpose of this study was to investigate, through stylistic analysis, the choral problems in twelve selected choruses from George Frederick Handel's oratorio, Messiah. The twelve choruses were selected for analysis in this study after consultation with several authorities in the field of choral music and on the basis that they are representative of problems encountered in the remaining choruses. Each of the twelve choruses was analyzed individually. Chapter I of this study presents the purpose of the study, the sub-problems involved, definitions of terms, delimitations, the basic hypothesis of the study, the basic assumptions of the study, methodology and the plan of the report. Chapter II of this study contains a brief biographical sketch of Handel, a discussion of the circumstances surrounding the composition of Messiah, and a survey of the Handelian oratorio Chorus. Chapter III presents the results of the analysis relevant to a discussion of each of the twelve choruses followed by a sectional presentation of the choral problems. In Chapter IV, a summary, some conclusions and recommendations are offered. Appendices A and B present reviews of selected recordings and vocal-piano editions of Messiah respectively.

Continuous Solutions of Laplace's Equation in Two Variables (open access)

Continuous Solutions of Laplace's Equation in Two Variables

In mathematical physics, Laplace's equation plays an especially significant role. It is fundamental to the solution of problems in electrostatics, thermodynamics, potential theory and other branches of mathematical physics. It is for this reason that this investigation concerns the development of some general properties of continuous solutions of this equation.

A Descriptive Ecological Study of Selected First Admissions to a Private Psychiatric Hospital 1960 through 1963 (open access)

A Descriptive Ecological Study of Selected First Admissions to a Private Psychiatric Hospital 1960 through 1963

Following Hawley's point of view regarding the definition and inclusiveness of human ecology, ecological data must include both a population and its characteristics and some measurements of the environment of this population. Following Hawley, an ecological investigation must select from available data and examine at least some of the relationships that may exist among these measurable population and environmental characteristics, in an effort to find and isolate the causes of mental disorders, particularly of those now called "functional."

The Dielectric Constant of Galvinoxyl (open access)

The Dielectric Constant of Galvinoxyl

The molecules in many substances are know to undergo at characteristic temperatures a change in their rotational freedom in the solid state, signifying either a change in structure of the material of the onset of limited rotation of the molecule about some symmetry axis. The purpose of this research was to determine from dielectric constant measurements over the 100°K-420°K temperature range whether or not the organic free radical galvinoxyl and its diamagnetic parent molecule, dihydroxydiphenylmethane, undergo any such transitions.

The Effectiveness of Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form in Evaluating an Operant Training Program for Severely Retarded Boys (open access)

The Effectiveness of Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form in Evaluating an Operant Training Program for Severely Retarded Boys

The problem of this study was to evaluate Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form as it is now being used in their operant conditioning techniques in certain basic self-help areas, and to suggest a more effective and informative method of scoring the Evaluation Form. The present method of scoring this evaluation form requires that -all items at each developmental level be passed in order to receive credit for that level. No partial credit is given at any level. This method of scoring yields a developmental level at which. the individual is functioning. It does not, however, point out the total overall development of the individual. The present type of basal developmental scoring is not as discriminating as far as picturing an individual's total development as the one which will be suggested.

It seemed desirable to investigate more fully the effect of hexadecanol on the microbial population of a reservoir. It was the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of hexadecanol on the micro-biota of Lake Hefner, to ascertain which organisms were stimulated by hexadecanol both in the laboratory and the reservoir, and to investigate the degradation of hexadecanol by microorganisms selected from Lake Hefner.

Fact, Interpretation, and Theme in the Historical Novels of A. B. Guthrie, Jr. (open access)

Fact, Interpretation, and Theme in the Historical Novels of A. B. Guthrie, Jr.

One can compare Guthrie's fiction with a sampling of the primary source material, to determine in general his degree of historical accuracy. Then one can compare Guthrie's interpretation with the interpretations of some widely read historiographers, to determine points of agreement or divergence. Finally, Guthrie's interpretation of history can be studied in relation to the themes he develops in his fiction.

Francis Thompson as a Myth-Maker (open access)

Francis Thompson as a Myth-Maker

The purpose of this paper is to establish that Francis Thompson, the English poet who lived from 1859 until 1907, is a myth-maker. In doing this, it will be necessary to define the term "myth-maker." The theme will then be developed by considering it in relation to the following topics: a brief resume of the events of his life having a direct bearing upon his mythic system, difficulties the student of his work must face, proof that he is a myth-maker of noteworthy significance, a consideration of the nature of his myth, a discussion of his most notable mythic values, and a special look at his mythic development of "The Hound of Heaven."
