Market Power in the Common Market (open access)

Market Power in the Common Market

This study involved an analysis of the competitive philosophy and market structures of the European Economic Community. The investigation was concerned with market power both within the EEC itself and between the EEC and its eighteen African Associates. Although the present Association is in part a vestige of the colonial era, its economic nature is closely related to the economic nature of the EEC. It was the object of this study to define these characteristics, showing how they evolved from forces concomitant with postwar recovery and integration.

The Antihero in the Novels of Juan Antonio de Zunzunegui

Although some of Zunzunegui's works are not so moralistic in intent as others, it will be seen that each one of them criticizes a particular bad trait in the protagonist which leads to unhappiness or defeat, either for the character himself or for someone close to him.

A Descriptive Ecological Study of Selected First Admissions to a Private Psychiatric Hospital 1960 through 1963 (open access)

A Descriptive Ecological Study of Selected First Admissions to a Private Psychiatric Hospital 1960 through 1963

Following Hawley's point of view regarding the definition and inclusiveness of human ecology, ecological data must include both a population and its characteristics and some measurements of the environment of this population. Following Hawley, an ecological investigation must select from available data and examine at least some of the relationships that may exist among these measurable population and environmental characteristics, in an effort to find and isolate the causes of mental disorders, particularly of those now called "functional."

Francis Thompson as a Myth-Maker (open access)

Francis Thompson as a Myth-Maker

The purpose of this paper is to establish that Francis Thompson, the English poet who lived from 1859 until 1907, is a myth-maker. In doing this, it will be necessary to define the term "myth-maker." The theme will then be developed by considering it in relation to the following topics: a brief resume of the events of his life having a direct bearing upon his mythic system, difficulties the student of his work must face, proof that he is a myth-maker of noteworthy significance, a consideration of the nature of his myth, a discussion of his most notable mythic values, and a special look at his mythic development of "The Hound of Heaven."

Jesse Henry Leavenworth: Indian Agent (open access)

Jesse Henry Leavenworth: Indian Agent

In 1763, the British government attempted to control land hungry colonists by prohibiting settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. The ambitious attempt failed. Two years later! Great Britain, submitting to the pressure of land speculators, homestead seekers, and fur trappers, initiated the treaty making process with the American Indians. Although the Indians had no concept of private property, they exchanged their mountains and valleys for whiskey, beads, and muskets. Following independence, the American government continued the British policy of treaty making and pushing the red men out of the path of white civilization. After the Louisiana Purchase, many Americans considered the region lying beyond the Mississippi River a convenient area in which to settle the Indians. A policy of concentration evolved through John C. Calhoun's idea of a permanent Indian country where settlers had no desire to go. The white man's drive for the western lands doomed this policy to failure. During the 1850's the federal government extinguished Indian title to much of the Great Plains and opened the prairies for white settlement. By the 1860's, only two large areas remained in which to concentrate the red men--Indian Territory and the public lands north of Nebraska. Treaty negotiations for moving …

The Effects of Hexadecanol on the Microbiota of Lake Hefner

It seemed desirable to investigate more fully the effect of hexadecanol on the microbial population of a reservoir. It was the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of hexadecanol on the micro-biota of Lake Hefner, to ascertain which organisms were stimulated by hexadecanol both in the laboratory and the reservoir, and to investigate the degradation of hexadecanol by microorganisms selected from Lake Hefner.

The Effectiveness of Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form in Evaluating an Operant Training Program for Severely Retarded Boys (open access)

The Effectiveness of Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form in Evaluating an Operant Training Program for Severely Retarded Boys

The problem of this study was to evaluate Denton State School's Developmental Evaluation Form as it is now being used in their operant conditioning techniques in certain basic self-help areas, and to suggest a more effective and informative method of scoring the Evaluation Form. The present method of scoring this evaluation form requires that -all items at each developmental level be passed in order to receive credit for that level. No partial credit is given at any level. This method of scoring yields a developmental level at which. the individual is functioning. It does not, however, point out the total overall development of the individual. The present type of basal developmental scoring is not as discriminating as far as picturing an individual's total development as the one which will be suggested.

Running Speed in the Long Path of a Single Choice Maze as a Function of Frustration in the Short Path (open access)

Running Speed in the Long Path of a Single Choice Maze as a Function of Frustration in the Short Path

The purpose of the present study was to further investigate the effects of frustration on the reward value of a goal object. Under the assumption that animals will learn to take the shortest path to a goal and that the reward value of an object will increase as effort increases, the following hypothesis was proposed: If rats are frustrated in the short path of a single choice maze (experimental group) then the experimental group's running time for the long path will be less than that of a control group not frustrated in the short path.

Aesthetics in the Popular Culture (open access)

Aesthetics in the Popular Culture

The purpose of this thesis is to consider three opposing statements regarding aesthetics in our popular culture. The first statement is that the youth of this age are demolishing the old standards of aesthetic taste and are creating a nonaesthetic; the second statement is that the youth are enlarging the vision and scope of the accepted standard of aesthetic and changing its direction; the thrid statement is that the creations of the youth in our popular culture of today are neither new nor nonaesthetic, but merely a continuation of aesthetics as they are accepted. One statement will be chosen as the most valid of the three.

Continuous Solutions of Laplace's Equation in Two Variables

In mathematical physics, Laplace's equation plays an especially significant role. It is fundamental to the solution of problems in electrostatics, thermodynamics, potential theory and other branches of mathematical physics. It is for this reason that this investigation concerns the development of some general properties of continuous solutions of this equation.
