Edward O. Wilson's "Sociobiology: The New Synthesis": What it Means for Sociology (open access)

Edward O. Wilson's "Sociobiology: The New Synthesis": What it Means for Sociology

The implications of sociobiology as presented in Wilson's Sociobiology: The New Synthesis are examined to determine to what extent 1) sociobiology can subsume sociology; 2) sociobiology is antithetical to sociology; 3) sociobiology reflects a movement within sociology. Basic assumptions of sociobiology pertinent to sociology--degree of determinism, existence of human universals, and definitions of society, culture, and human nature--are scrutinized alongside Wilson's view of sociology as a scientific discipline. The thesis explores weaknesses of both sociology and sociobiology and concludes that sociobiology, in ignoring culture as a source of behavioral motivation, is limited in reducing the sociological perspective to a biological one. Although the two disciplines have antithetical foundations, sociology has already begun to incorporate selected aspects of the sociobiological perspective.

Gustav Mahler's use and cyclic integration of motivic and thematic quotations (open access)

Gustav Mahler's use and cyclic integration of motivic and thematic quotations

All of Mahler's works may be divided into four distinct chronological groups, referred to as "symphonic cycles." Motives and themes from the songs within each symphonic cycle were quoted in symphonies in the same cycle. This system of self reference was unique to Mahler, although earlier composers such as Schubert and Wagner set precedents for some of the techniques used by Mahler. The quotations in the early periods appeared only on the surface and did not blend well with their surroundings, but as time progressed Mahler developed the ability to combine the seemingly incompatible elements more smoothly. Mahler's early fascination with distant sounds was also a factor in his use of quotations. The appendix contains a catalog of 100 quotations.

Investigation of the Developmental Profile of Chromosomal Proteins in Zea Mays (open access)

Investigation of the Developmental Profile of Chromosomal Proteins in Zea Mays

Histone proteins were examined during development in the meiotic elongate and a genetically close line N6HT. Histones were also extracted from an F1 (el x N6Ht). Comparisonc beteen the histone samples from each line of N6HT and elongate, and the F1 for leaf, root, and stem were inconclusive. A tassel sample form elongate exhibited a markedly slower migrating band that was not present in N6HT. The histone profiles of elongate and N6HT also differed. Each line N6HT and elongate exhibited three protein bands in the H1 region. Maize histone samples have been shown to exhibit four major H1 bands. The possibility exists that an H1 protein altered in its molecular weight and possibly in its interaction with the chromosome is present in elongate.
