The Acute Effects of Intermittent Running on Serum CK and LDH Enzyme Activities in Runners and Non-Runners (open access)

The Acute Effects of Intermittent Running on Serum CK and LDH Enzyme Activities in Runners and Non-Runners

Acute effects of repeated sprinting upon serum creatine kinase (CK), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and isozymal activities were studied in five collegiate runners (R_s) and six non-runners (NR_s ). After an intermittent running treadmill test, blood sampling showed three-fold mean increases in CK with no change in LDH in both groups; group differences were insignificant (p>.05). Results suggest (1) intense anaerobic exercise produces moderate enzyme elevations; (2) relatively equivalent exercise intensities are critical to enzyme responses in exercising individuals of varying fitness levels; and (3) exercise-induced enzyme release may be consequential to muscle cell membrane permeability changes from decreased intracellular high-energy phosphates.

An Analysis of Perceived Exertion of a Graded Isometric Muscle Contraction of the Forearm Flexors Under Conditions of Magnitude Production and Magnitude Estimation (open access)

An Analysis of Perceived Exertion of a Graded Isometric Muscle Contraction of the Forearm Flexors Under Conditions of Magnitude Production and Magnitude Estimation

This study analyzed an individual's ability to perceive levels of exertion of an isometric contraction. Two samples of college students were tested under magnitude production or magnitude estimation. A significant F was obtained for the magnitude production condition. An insignificant F was obtained for the magnitude estimation condition. This study concludes that subjects tested under magnitude production will perceive the 100 percent level with the least amount of error and that error will increase as the percentages descend from the 100 percent level. Subjects tested under magnitude estimation will be equally in error when perceiving percentages of a maximum contraction of the forearm flexors.

An Analysis of the Factors Which Distinguish Tennis Players of Different Serving Abilities (open access)

An Analysis of the Factors Which Distinguish Tennis Players of Different Serving Abilities

The purpose of this study was to examine selected mechanical factors involved in the tennis serve. Special emphasis was placed on identifying factors which distinguish players of different serving abilities. Ten right-handed female tennis players, five ranked, and five unranked, were evaluated, following filming with a high-speed camera, on the basis of five good and five fault serves. The ranked players were seen to differ from the unranked players with respect to (a) serving consistency, (b) initial Y-center of gravity values, (c) certain segment angles at the peak of the ball toss and at ball contact, and (d) certain joint angles at the moment of the ball contact.

An Analytical Study of the Practices in the Administration and Conduct of Women's Fencing Programs in Colleges in Texas with the Development of a Manual on Fencing for College Women

The purpose of this study was to determine the number of colleges within the State of Texas which offer fencing in their Women's Physical Education Programs. An attempt was made, by mailing questionnaires to sixty-two colleges in the State, to discover the number of colleges which offer fencing, and the present practices in the teaching of fencing. Since most publications on fencing are written by the "professionals and the fencing masters," an effort has also been made to develop a fencing manual to be used by the individuals who have had the fundamentals of fencing, and as a guide to the beginning fencers in order to equip them with the necessary material for teaching and learning fencing.

Chronic Alterations in Joint Flexibility Associated with Aerobic Dance Instruction of College Age Females (open access)

Chronic Alterations in Joint Flexibility Associated with Aerobic Dance Instruction of College Age Females

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine if three selected aerobic dance related conditions would result in chronic alterations of flexibility of college women and (2) to compare flexibility measures of college age females during a semester of aerobic dance instruction. Subjects were sixty-three college women enrolled in aerobic dance, bowling, and archery classes. Eight flexibility measures were obtained during the third and eleventh weeks of the experimental period. Data were analyzed by a factor analysis the Pearson Product Moment Correlation, and eight oneway analyses of covariance. Conclusions of the investigation were (1) a program of aerobic dance alone is not sufficient to promote flexibility, and (2) supplemental flexibility activities of ten minutes duration used with aerobic dance training are beneficial in increasing hip flexion.

A Cinematographic Comparison of Two Long-Hang Kip Techniques on the Horizontal Bar (open access)

A Cinematographic Comparison of Two Long-Hang Kip Techniques on the Horizontal Bar

This study used cinematography to determine differences in velocity, acceleration, moments of force, and body centers of gravity in four different positions of two techniques of the long-hang kip. Three female gymnasts performed five attempts of each technique: the traditional method, with an arch in the lower back at the end of the forward swing, and approximate shoulder angle of 180 degrees or more; and the newer method, with no arch in the lower back and approximate shoulder angle of 90 degrees or less. Three. USGF-rated judges scored the kips, and due to inability to distinguish between the two techniques, two subjects were eliminated. Major differences occurred in the swing extension, with the newer technique producing more velocity and a higher center of gravity throughout the movement.

A Comparative Study of Job Satisfaction of Two-Year Community/Junior College and Four-Year University Physical Education Faculty

This investigation was undertaken to compare the degree of job satisfaction of physical education faculty who were employed at community/junior colleges and four-year universities. The relationship of selected demographic variables (sex, age, contract longevity, teaching experience, and highest degree completed) to faculty job satisfaction was also investigated. Faculty (N = 70) who were employed in community/junior colleges and universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area were chosen as subjects for the study. Two instruments were utilized to collect the data. These were the Personal Data Inventory (PDI) and the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire (PTO). Analysis of the data indicated that university faculty and community/junior college faculty differed significantly in their perceptions of job satisfaction in the specific areas of teacher rapport with immediate supervisor, curriculum issues, and school facilities and services. Four demographic variables (sex, age, contract longevity, and teaching experience) were significantly related to ten specific areas of job satisfaction and to the subjects' total job satisfaction.
