Serenade for Viola and Orchestra (open access)

Serenade for Viola and Orchestra

The Serenade for Viola and Orchestra is a one-movement composition of three connecting sections with two main themes of contrasting character. The "relatedness" of the sections does not depend on common thematic material, but rather on a system whereby motives evolve out of the thematic material and from elements in preceding sections. The sonorous timbre of the viola is exploited and becomes the central tessitura for the piece. The title is representative of the lyrical nature of the composition as a whole, especially the first and third section.

Psalm (open access)

Psalm

Psalm is a composition for symphony orchestra. The duration is from twelve to fifteen minutes. The form is sonata-allegro. Tonal organization is twelve-tone, although melodic development is by traditional methods rather than by row technique. Tempo modulation has replaced the traditional tonal modulation of sonata form. The first theme provides the harmonic basis for the entire work after the introduction. The second theme is used extensively in the development. The development is a fugue in which the techniques of retrograde, inversion, diminution, and augmentation are used. As a study in textures, Psalm displays variety rather than development.

Primary Productivity and Nutrient Relationships in Garza-Little Elm Reservoir

A large, multi-basin reservoir (Garza-Little Elm Reservoir) in north central Texas was studied to determine the relative effects of various parameters on primary productivity. The basins were impounded several years apart, thus allowing the influence of age on water chemistry and biota to be considered. Another principal influence on water quality was secondary sewage effluent that entered one basin from a nearby source.

Interaction of Various Components of Staphylococcus Aureus

Previous reports have shown that killed cells of S. aureus potentiate the lethal effect of crude staphylococcal alpha toxin for mice. In the present study this synergistic effect has been demonstrated with highly purified preparations of alpha toxin. Time studies indicate that the active principle does not appear to be released until approximately two hours following administration of the whole cells.

A Study of Transient Molecular Ions Using a Resonant Microwave Cavity as a Probe

The microwave-resonant-cavity technique was employes as a probe to determine the presence of molecular ions of helium in a d.c.-discharge, helium-plasma filament placed coaxially in a TM010 mode cavity. The cavity-resonance profile was displayed on an oscilloscope, and the nature of the perturbation of this resonance was used to determine the nature of the ions present in the plasma stream.
