Perceptions of School Administrators on Evidence-Based Practices in Transition Planning for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Poor post-school outcomes for young adults with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have underscored the need to gain insight into the use of evidence-based practices (EBPs) in the planning and implementation of transition services. EBPs for effective transition planning and implementation have been documented in the literature but do not appear to be fully utilized in practice to achieve desired student outcomes, reflecting a research-to-practice gap. EBPs have the potential to produce positive outcomes at the high school level, if implemented with fidelity. Special education personnel, especially administrators, play a vital and unique role in transition planning. They can either facilitate or hinder the process. This phenomenological study investigated the perceptions of public school administrators regarding the extent of their awareness of EBPs to ensure the successful transition of students with ASD and associated barriers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 secondary-level public school administrators. Major themes identified through analyzing the qualitative data included (a) a positive vision for students with ASD, (b) characteristics of a good transition program, (c) administrators' roles in the transition process, (d) barriers to EBP implementation, (e) strategies to reduce barriers, and (f) ownership of what administrators can do to remedy the problem. A Performance Edition of the Vespers Settings in Sacri E Festivi Concenti, Opera Nona by Giovanni Legrenzi

Giovanni Legrenzi was a prolific composer of vocal music and maestro di cappella at the Basilica di San Marco but his vocal works are not often studied as a part of the Venetian lineage with composers such as Willaert, de Rore, Zarlino, Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Vivaldi. Despite his being a prolific composer who had significant influence on the work of other musicians in the traditional canon, references to Legrenzi in standard music publications (Grout, Taruskin, Grove Music Online, etc.) are at best sparse, and largely biographical. This dissertation is one step to correct that pattern by creating a performance edition of Sacri e festivi concenti, Opera nona, one of Legrenzi's significant works near the beginning of his Venetian period. This collection of sacred music was published on 12 June 1667 in Venice though Legrenzi's exact whereabouts at the time remain uncertain. This phase of his career can be defined by his having sought more prestigious and lucrative employment. Having lived and worked in rural Lombardy and Ferrara, he made unsuccessful overtures in places such as Milan, Bologna, Vienna, and Paris. The Power of Place: A Qualitative Evaluation of Stream Monitoring Data Usage by Decision-Makers in Dane County, Wisconsin

Has years of citizen-based nutrient sampling and baseline water quality monitoring efforts only had a "trivial" impact on natural resource management decisions? This thesis will explore this and other findings from a qualitative evaluation of the Rock River Coalition (RRC) citizen-based stream monitoring project in Dane County, Wisconsin, USA. These findings are the culmination of 47 semi-structured interviews with decision-makers from seven client-identified categories and participant observations of board meetings and other watershed groups. Interview questions focused on current strategies of data design and dissemination with the goal of constructing a clearer picture of existing data usage by Dane County decision-makers. In the wider picture of citizen science and community-based research, this case study aims to highlight barriers to data use and potential solutions. The results of this case study were understood through four key frames: (1) Bourdieu's concept of symbolic capital, (2) Barzilai‐Nahon's theory of network gatekeeping, (3) Newman et al.'s framework for leveraging the power of place, and (4) a Foucauldian approach to the production of scientific knowledge. Praseodymium Oxide and Organic Modified Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles for Electrodeposition of Nickel-Ceramic Nanocomposites to Enhance Corrosion Protection and Mechanical Properties

There is a consistent need in many industries, especially oil and gas, to develop coatings which have higher corrosion resistance and better hardness to extend the lifetime of equipment when it is exposed to hostile environments. Electrodeposition has been a favorable method in the synthesis of metal coatings because of its low cost, convenience, ability to work at low temperatures, and ability to control surface morphology and structure. The inclusion of ceramic nanoparticles in metal matrix composites has previously been investigated as a technique to not only increase the corrosion resistance of the native metal but also to improve the hardness and mechanical properties. Cerium oxide nanoparticles were modified through the grafting of organic groups with increasing hydrophobicity for use in nickel coatings on stainless steel to further improve the corrosion properties while maintaining the hardness of the nanocomposite coatings. The process of modifying the cerium oxide nanoparticles involved the use of aryl diazonium salts and resulted in multilayers forming on the surface of the nanoparticles. Praseodymium oxide nanoparticles were also investigated as additives to nickel coatings, since praseodymium oxide has not yet been studied as a possible corrosion protection enhancement in coatings. Preparing and Using Hydrophobic Fluorinated Polymers for Corrosion Protection on Aluminum Substrate

Corrosion is one of the most expensive failures in industries that used metal components and other construction materials. In fact, corrosion is responsible for hundreds of billions-dollar loss in the US alone each year. In general, corrosion occurs when metal surfaces are exposed to water, oxygen, acids, bases, or salts. Therefore, metal substrates must be protected by using materials that act as barriers to avoid destructive corrosion attack. Aluminum is one of the most common metals used in the industry; and it is used in many places such as refining and petroleum production equipment, pipelines, and fossil fuel power plants. Aluminum is known to have corrosion resistance due to the forming of an oxide layer that can be reformed rapidly if the surface gets damaged. However, in the long-term the oxide layer cannot protect the aluminum surface from corrosion because it is stable only in neutral mediums and it is soluble in acidic and basic environments. Process-Structure-Property Relationships in Friction Stir Welded Precipitation Strengthened Aluminum Alloys

Through a series of carefully designed experiments, characterization and some modeling tools, this work is aimed at studying the role of thermal profiles on different microstructural zones and associated properties like strength and corrosion through a variation of weld parameters, thermal boundary conditions and material temper. Two different alloys belonging to the Al-Cu and Al-Cu-Li system in different temper conditions- peak aged (T8) and annealed (O) were used. A 3D-thermal pseudo mechanical (TPM) model is developed for the FSW process using heat transfer module in COMSOL Multiphysics and is based on a heat source wherein the temperature dependent yield shear stress is used for the heat generation. The precipitation and coarsening model is based on the Kampmann and Wagner theoretical framework and accounts for the competition between the various nucleation sites for both metastable and equilibrium precipitates. The model predicts different precipitate mean radius and volume fraction for the various zones in the friction stir welded material. A model for the yield strength is developed which considers contributions from different strengthening mechanisms. Proximal Policy Optimization in StarCraft

Deep reinforcement learning is an area of research that has blossomed tremendously in recent years and has shown remarkable potential in computer games. Real-time strategy game has become an important field of artificial intelligence in game for several years. This paper is about to introduce a kind of algorithm that used to train agents to fight against computer bots. Not only because games are excellent tools to test deep reinforcement learning algorithms for their valuable insight into how well an algorithm can perform in isolated environments without the real-life consequences, but also real-time strategy games are a very complex genre that challenges artificial intelligence agents in both short-term or long-term planning. In this paper, we introduce some history of deep learning and reinforcement learning. Then we combine them with StarCraft. PPO is the algorithm which have some of the benefits of trust region policy optimization (TRPO), but it is much simpler to implement, more general for environment, and have better sample complexity. The StarCraft environment: Blood War Application Programming Interface (BWAPI) is open source to test. The results show that PPO can work well in BWAPI and train units to defeat the opponents. Quantile Regression Deep Q-Networks for Multi-Agent System Control

Training autonomous agents that are capable of performing their assigned job without fail is the ultimate goal of deep reinforcement learning. This thesis introduces a dueling Quantile Regression Deep Q-network, where the network learns the state value quantile function and advantage quantile function separately. With this network architecture the agent is able to learn to control simulated robots in the Gazebo simulator. Carefully crafted reward functions and state spaces must be designed for the agent to learn in complex non-stationary environments. When trained for only 100,000 timesteps, the agent is able reach asymptotic performance in environments with moving and stationary obstacles using only the data from the inertial measurement unit, LIDAR, and positional information. Through the use of transfer learning, the agents are also capable of formation control and flocking patterns. The performance of agents with frozen networks is improved through advice giving in Deep Q-networks by use of normalized Q-values and majority voting.

Revealing the Positive Meaning of a Negation

Negation is a complex phenomenon present in all human languages, allowing for the uniquely human capacities of denial, contradiction, misrepresentation, lying, and irony. It is in the first place a phenomenon of semantical opposition. Sentences containing negation are generally (a) less informative than affirmative ones, (b) morphosyntactically more marked—all languages have negative markers while only a few have affirmative markers, and (c) psychologically more complex and harder to process. Negation often conveys positive meaning. This meaning ranges from implicatures to entailments. In this dissertation, I develop a system to reveal the underlying positive interpretation of negation. I first identify which words are intended to be negated (i.e, the focus of negation) and second, I rewrite those tokens to generate an actual positive interpretation. I identify the focus of negation by scoring probable foci along a continuous scale. One of the obstacles to exploring foci scoring is that no public datasets exist for this task. Thus, to study this problem I create new corpora. The corpora contain verbal, nominal and adjectival negations and their potential positive interpretations along with their scores ranging from 1 to 5. Stephen Chatman's Piano Fantasies (1993): An Instructional and Performance Guide for Teachers and Intermediate Piano Students

Contemporary repertoire is not commonly taught or explored by teachers during the intermediate level, when a student's musical training is transitioning to an advanced level. Nonetheless, it is important for piano instructors to be open-minded about contemporary music and have some perspective on the development of music repertoire in the future. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a performance and pedagogical guide to Stephen Chatman's (b. 1950) Fantasies, from both technical and artistic viewpoints. The collection, which consists of eleven pieces, features a wide variety of contemporary idioms, styles, and means of notation. For instance, there are jazz-like syncopated rhythms, asymmetrical accents reminiscent of Primitivism, and Impressionistic or dissonant sonorities. Fantasies is not only a valuable tool for students to explore new sounds and improve their performing techniques while executing nontraditional notations and contemporary idioms, it is also a great teaching resource for instructors to promote students' musicality through hearing, seeing, and thinking. In this study, I provide individual, detailed descriptions for each of the pieces in the score, adding examples on how to address the difficulties they present to the performer. Substrate Nanotopography and Stiffness Modulation of Cell Behavior

The physical characteristics (i.e., nanostructure and stiffness) of the extracellular matrix where cells reside have been shown to profoundly affect numerous cellular events in vivo and also been employed to modulate cell behavior in vitro, yet how these physical cues regulate cell behavior is still elusive. Therefore, we engineered a variety of nanotopographies with different shapes and dimensions, and investigated how the nanotopographical cue, through focal adhesions-cytoskeleton-nucleus pathway, affected cell phenotype and function. We further designed and fabricated well-defined substrates which had either identical biochemical cue (adhesive ligand presentation) but different nanotopographical cues or identical nanotopography but different biochemical cues, and dissected the roles of these cues in cell modulation. In addition, we revealed that the human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) could obtain nanotopographical memory from the past culture environment, and the nanotopographical memory influenced the future fate decision of the hMSCs. Moreover, we evaluated the effects of substrate nanotopographical and stiffness cues on the fibrogenesis of human lung fibroblasts in response to carbon nanotubes and highlighted the significance of these physical cues in the development of physiologically relevant in vitro models for nanotoxicological study. Synthesis and Characterization of π-Extended Benzoporphyrins

Porphyrins offer a very synthetically flexible template which can be modified in numerous ways to synthesize molecules with very useful properties applicable in areas such as non-linear optical properties, photodynamic therapy, dye-sensitized solar cells, chemical sensors and organic electronic devices. β-Substituted π-extended porphyrins offer unique capabilities in tuning the properties of the molecule towards practical applications. Increased π-conjugation allows the HOMO-LUMO gap to decrease and hence to redshift the absorption into the near-IR region. β-Fused benzoporphyrins offer additional benefits in which the benzene ring itself can be further modified using electron donating substituents and electron donating substituents to electronically tune these porphyrins for various uses. The goal of the research pursued in this dissertation was to develop new methods for the development of β-Substituted π-extended porphyrins and to study their optical and electronic properties. To accomplish this goal, we developed new method to synthesize A2B2 type tetrabenzoporphyrins and we studied the electron transfer in such systems. We also studied the effectiveness of such systems in dye sensitized solar cells. A new method to synthesize functionalized naphthalene fused porphyrins was also developed and we were also able to use this method to synthesize a push-pull naphthalene fused porphyrin.

"Teach Me, Toward Me": Returning the SISTAH to the SISTAH: Exploring the Use of Afrocentric Pedagogy and Andragogy for Black Women in the Higher Education Classroom

The purpose of the study was two-fold. First, the study explored how self-identified Afrocentrist professors in higher education utilized Afrocentric pedagogy and andragogy to address the learning needs of students, specifically Black women students. Second, the study explored the ways in which Black women students experienced that learning in the higher education classroom. The purpose was advanced through an in-depth analysis of Afrocentric teaching and learning in the higher education. A sample of five self-identified Afrocentric faculty members - three females and two males - and five Black women students who studied with those professors was identified. Participants were interviewed individually in-person and by telephone. Data analysis resulted in the themes of the importance of living an Afrocentric life in which the African body is centered and elevated, rejection of European dominance and universalism, re-routing history, and introducing Afrocentricity as a methodology from which to analyze human life. These themes presented core values, approaches, practices and characteristics utilized in Afrocentric teaching. Findings also showed that the Black women student participants received multiple benefits from receiving an Afrocentric education that assisted them in their journeys through higher education. Three Essays on Internet of Things Adoption and Use

IoT is expected to become ubiquitous and influence every aspect of everyday experience. Toward A Typology of eLancers: A Psychology of Working Perspective

There is currently an increasing trend among the American working population to voluntarily join the gig economy. New terms like the gig economy, sharing economy, internet freelancing, and eLancing have been created to understand this emerging trend among today's workforce. There is a small, yet highly relevant, body of scholarly literature in human resource management that is focused specifically on the eLancing economy as a subset of the gig economy. The purpose of this research is to acknowledge and contribute to this timely literature, which has adequately recognized the enormous potential of this new trend of working. Grounded in the psychology of working theory, a theoretical typology of eLancers is proposed based on the workers' level of volition to be able to choose eLancing as their employment. Further, various predictors such as demographics and personality characteristics were explored on the basis of which eLancers can be classified into types. The study also proposes that different types of eLancers differ in their attitudinal and behavioral work and life outcomes. Transgender Representation in Mainstream Advertising

This study focuses on the transgender community's presence and portrayal in advertisements that reach a broad, mainstream audience base. Through a mixed-methods use of focus groups and qualitative content analysis, the content, context, and framings of ads between the years 2015 and 2018 are explored to illustrate current portrayals of the trans community and how the industry is approaching this subcultural group. Its findings contribute to advertising research by exploring current trends in trans portrayals in the cultural context they exist. Because trans advertising in both LGBTQ+ publications and to mainstream audience is largely unexplored, this study seeks to begin a conversation among advertising professionals. The main objective is to ultimately improve the number of genuine, positive portrayals of trans people in advertising and hold the industry accountable for the role they play in serving this community.

Two Essays on Non-GAAP Reporting

This dissertation investigates the interrelationships between a client's non-GAAP earnings disclosures, financial health (profit and loss status), and the external auditor's assessment of the client's going concern status. This dissertation comprises two essays. Essay 1 examines the informativeness and the quality of non-GAAP earnings disclosures in profit and loss firms separately. Using a large sample of non-GAAP earnings voluntarily disclosed by managers, I find that the informativeness and the quality of non-GAAP earnings vary in firms cross-classified by GAAP loss status and non-GAAP loss status. I also find that loss firms have higher quality non-GAAP exclusions relative to profit firms, although the expenses excluded by both profit and loss firms are associated with firms' future performance. Further, I posit and find that profit firms which voluntarily disclose non-GAAP losses have high-quality exclusions, while other non-GAAP reporting profit firms have low-quality exclusions. Having found that non-GAAP earnings in loss firms is opportunistic to some extent, I next study, in Essay 2, whether auditors understand the implications of low-quality non-GAAP reporting in these firms. UV Magnetic Plasmons in Cobalt Nanoparticles

The main goals of this research were to fabricate magnetic cobalt nanoparticles and study their structural, crystal structure, optical, and magnetic properties. Cobalt nanoparticles with average particle size 8.7 nm were fabricated by the method of high temperature reduction of cobalt salt utilizing trioctylphosphine as a surfactant, oleic acid as a stabilizer, and lithium triethylborohydride as a reducing reagent. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis confirmed the formation of cobalt nanoparticles. High resolution transmission electron microscopy images show that Co NPs form both HCP and FCC crystal structure. The blocking temperature of 7.6 nm Co NPs is 189 K. Above the blocking temperature, Co NPs are single domain and hence showed superparamagnetic behavior. Below the blocking temperature, Co NPs are ferromagnetic. Cobalt nanoparticles with a single-domain crystal structure support a sharp plasmon resonance at 280 nm. Iron nanoparticles with average particle size 4.8 nm were fabricated using chemical reduction method show plasmon resonance at 266 nm. Iron nanoparticles are ferromagnetic at 6 K and superparamagnetic at 300 K.

Who is Who in Zimbabwe's Armed Revolution? Representation of the ZAPU/ZIPRA and the ZANU/ZANLA in High School History Textbooks Narratives of the Liberation War

The liberation war was a watershed event in the history of Zimbabwe. According to the ZANU PF (Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front) ruling elites, an understanding of the common experiences of the people during the liberation war provides the best opportunity to mold a common national identity and consciousness. However, the representation of important historical events in a nation's history is problematic. At best events are manipulated for political purposes by the ruling elites, and at the worst they are distorted or exaggerated. In Zimbabwe, the representation of the ZAPU/ZIPRA and the ZANU/ZANLA as liberation movements in high school history textbooks during the armed struggle is a hot potato. This study critically examined and explored the contested "representational practices" of the ZAPU/ZIPRA and the ZANU/ZANLA as liberation movements during the Zimbabwean armed revolution. By means of qualitative content analysis, seven high school history textbooks from Zimbabwe were analyzed. Drawing from postcolonial perspectives and insights, particularly Fanon's concept of the pitfall of national consciousness, the study unveiled the way in which Zimbabwean high school textbooks portrayed the ZAPU/ZIPRA and the ZANU/ZANLA as very different liberation movements whose roles and contributions were unequal. 489 Days is an animated documentary about the harrowing experiences of Egyptian-American Mohamed Soltan, who survived 16 months of hunger strike in an Egyptian prison. Caught up in the political turmoil which followed the Arab Spring uprisings, Soltan was unjustly incarcerated between August 2013 and May 2015, when the United States government intervened to release him weeks after an Egyptian court sentenced him to life in prison. The film is also the larger story of an estimated 60,000 political detainees currently held in Egypt without due process, and in violation of local and international human rights conventions.

Application-Focused Investigation of Monovalent Metal Complexes for Nanoparticle Synthesis

Over the last 20 years, there has occurred an increase in the number, scope, and impact of nanomaterials projects. By leveraging the Surface Plasmon Resonance of metallic nanoparticles for labelling, sensing, and treatment, researchers have demonstrated the versatile utility of these nanomaterials in medicine. The literature provides evidence of use of simple, well-known chemistry for nanomaterials synthesis when the focus is new applications of nanomaterials. A case in point, is the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles, whereby HAuCl4, CuCl2, Cu(acac)2, and AgNO3 are typically employed as nanoparticle precursors. Unfortunately, the use of these precursors limits the number of applications available to these materials - particularly for AuNPs in medicine, where the byproducts of nanoparticle synthesis (most often surface-adsorbed reductants, toxic stabilizers, and growth directors) cause nanoparticles to fail clinical trials. Despite the several thousand publications detailing the advancements in nanoparticle therapeutics, as of 2017, there were only 50 FDA-approved nanoparticle formulations. Less than 10 were based on metallic nanoparticles. This is a problem because many of these nanoparticle therapeutics demonstrate potent cell killing ability and labeling of cells. Asian and Asian Indian American Immigrant Students: Factors Influencing Their Academic Performance

Asian American students have done well in school; they have had higher academic achievements, higher academic scores, lower dropout rates and higher college entrance rates as compared to other minorities and generally other students in the United States (U.S.). A possible explanation to the higher academic performance and achievement of the Asian American students is that they are more likely to have experienced an environment that is conducive to learning at home; their parents were involved and held higher expectations. Immigrant minorities have been found to do well in schools in many parts of the world. Similarly, here in the U.S. there has been increasing evidence that students of Asian ancestry, both immigrants and U.S. born, complete more years of education than most of the other ethnicities. Current research and data on the academic performance of Asian immigrants includes most Asian countries. Beyond Nothingness: A Broader Nihilism in Cinema Paradiso by Stephen Goss

Stephen Goss composed Cinema Paradiso, a six-movement suite for solo guitar, as an homage to films and film directors. Goss cites nihilism as a theme in Dogville, the film that inspires the fourth movement, "Mandalay," but I assert that all the films and many musical devices throughout the piece can be read through the lens of nihilism. The first movement, "Paris, Texas," depicts the stark landscape of the opening scene of the 1984 Wim Wenders film of the same name. "Modern Times" chronicles Charlie Chaplin's slapstick-laden descent from the factory to the insane asylum in the opening sequence of his 1936 Modern Times. "Noir" is a tribute to the procedures of film noir: violent storylines that depict the harshness of life, dim lighting, and anti-hero characters, all accompanied by jazz. Lars von Trier's Dogville provides the movement "Mandalay" with its nihilistic meaning, but Goss writes that he invokes the musical style of Kurt Weill's opera The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny. Bipolar Spectrum Traits in Day-to-Day Life: Ecological Momentary Assessment of Reward Sensitivity, Circadian Timing, and Experience of Reward in the Environment

The current study examined 236 undergraduate students in a week long twice-per-day ecological momentary assessment exploring the influence of baseline reward sensitivity and interactions between circadian variables (i.e., total sleep time, sleep quality) and daily measures of reward. Though primary study findings did not support reward sensitivity related moderation of sleep-reward pathways, a number of notable findings emerged. We found evidence of specific domains of reward sensitivity (anticipatory reward and reward responsiveness) which are uniquely related to daily experiences of reward. In addition, bidirectional circadian-reward pathways were found between sleep quality and daily rewards which suggests pathways towards reward-related engagement. Evidence also supported interactions between sleep quality and total sleep time on experience of daily reward, further highlighting the complexity of sleep-reward pathways and their relevance to mood symptoms.
