UNT Libraries Assistive Technology Report 2021
This report summarizes the results of a survey given to UNT Library employees on assistive technology practices. In fall 2021, the Library Accessibility Committee conducted an online survey about assistive technologies in the Libraries. The purpose of this survey was 1) to learn more about the assistive technology in the Libraries (e.g., types of technology, employee knowledge, etc.) and 2) to learn more about employee training preferences. The survey included 13 questions divided among three sections: assistive technology, training preferences, and suggestions. Sixty-seven (67) library employees responded to the survey. Results are provided in the Assistive Technology Survey Report.

Development and Exploration of End-User Healthcare Technology Acceptance Models
This dissertation consists of three studies that collectively investigate the factors influencing the consumer adoption intention towards emerging healthcare technologies. Essay 1 systematically reviews the extent literature on healthcare technology adoption and serves as the theoretical foundation of the dissertation. It investigates different models that have been previously applied to study healthcare technology acceptance. Meta-analysis method is used to quantitatively synthesize the findings from prior empirical studies. Essay 2 posits, develops, and tests a comprehensive biotechnology acceptance model from the end-user's perspective. Two new constructs, namely, perceived risk and trust in technology, are integrated into the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology. Research hypotheses are tested using survey data and partial least square – structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Essay 3 extends the findings from the Essay 2 and further investigates the consumer's trust initiation and its effect on behavioral adoption intention. To achieve this purpose, Essay 3 posits and develops a trust model. Survey data allows testing the model using PLS-SEM. The models developed in this dissertation reflect significant modifications specific to the healthcare context. The findings provide value for academia, practitioners, and policymakers.

Formulating a Scalable Approach to Patron-Requested Digitization in Archives
This article examines how archives were forced to rethink their modes of providing access to physical collections because of the coronavirus of 2019 (COVID-19). Whereas difficult copyright questions raised by reproducing items could previously be skirted by requiring researchers to work with materials in person, the long-term closure of reading rooms and decrease in long-distance travel mean that archives need a workflow for handling user digitization requests that is scalable and requires consulting only easily identifiable information and, assuming full reproduction is off the table, reproducing items in a collection under 17 U.S.C. § 108 or through a strategy of rapid risk assessment. There is a challenge in creating a policy that will work across different formats and genres of archival materials, so this article offers some suggestions for how to think about these parameters according to US copyright law and calls for a committee of experts to work out a model policy that could serve remote users of archival collections even after the COVID-19 crisis has passed.

The Heart of Librarianship: A Literature Review of Outreach in Academic Libraries
Presentation that provides a summary of the literature on library outreach and indicates how the literature review has impacted outreach developments at the UNT Libraries. Outreach has a positive impact on student success, but a clear definition of what outreach is looms beyond the literature. Intermixed with marketing, advertising, broader engagement methods, and social media use, outreach has become a catch-all term for activities that bring awareness to library resources, services, programs, spaces, and employees. It was presented at the Library History Seminar XIV: Libraries Without Borders event which was held virtually on June 10-12, 2021.

The Impact of Including Teacher and School Characteristics on Predicting Value-Added Score Estimates
Value-added models (VAMs) have become widely used in evaluating teacher accountability. The use of these models for high-stakes decisions making has been very controversial due to lack of consistency in classifying teachers as high performing or low performing. There is an abundance of research on the impact of various student level covariates on teacher value-added scores; however, less is known about the impact of teacher-level and school-level covariates. This study uses hierarchical linear modeling to examine the impact of including teacher characteristics, school characteristics, and student demographics aggregated at the school level on elementary mathematics and reading teacher value-added scores. Data for this study was collected from a large school district in north Texas. This study found that across all VAMs fitted, 32% of mathematics teachers and 37% of reading teachers changed quintile ranking for their value-added score at least once across all VAMs, while 55% and 65% of schools changed their quintile ranking of value-added scores based on mathematics and reading achievement, respectively. The results show that failing to control for aggregated student demographics has a large impact on both teacher level and school level value-added scores. Accommodating People Safety Curriculum for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students
Children with disabilities are three to four times more likely to be abused than their non-disabled peers due to the impact of challenges related to behavior, cognition, language, social skills, and communication skills. In September of 2018, the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) specifically noted the need to establish maltreatment prevention and response curricula and promote research and advocacy surrounding maltreatment of children with disabilities. One common curriculum recommended is Kidpower®. While Kidpower® shows promise in increasing people safety skills and offers some basic accommodations for use with disabled populations, a complete accommodation plan for deaf or hard of hearing students has not been developed. The purpose of this study was to explore how Kidpower® curriculum could be accommodated to meet the unique needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from the perspective of the deaf education community, including deaf adults, deaf education teachers, deaf education teacher preparation faculty, and parents with deaf or hard of hearing children. A combination of focus groups and interviews were utilized to review lessons and homework from the Kidpower® curriculum. Switchable and Memorable Adhesion of Gold-Coated Microspheres with Electrochemical Modulation
Switchable adhesives using stimuli-responsive systems have many applications, including transfer printing, climbing robots, and gripping in pick and place processes. Among these adhesives, electroadhesive surface can spontaneously adjust their adhesion in response to an external electric field. However, electroadhesives usually need high voltage (e.g. kV) and the adhesion disappears upon turning off the signal. These limitations make them complicated and costly. In this research, we demonstrated a gold-coated silica microsphere (GCSM) with highly switchable and memorable adhesion triggered by a relatively small voltage (<30 V). In the experiment, a silica microsphere with a diameter of 15 μm was glued to a tipless atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever. The nanoscale thick gold coating was sprayed on the surface of the microsphere by a sputter coater. AFM was used to explore the tunable adhesion with an external voltage at different relative humidity (RH). The results revealed that when applying a positive electrical bias at high RH, the adhesive force increased dramatically while it decreased to almost zero after applying a negative potential. The Impact of Library Instruction on Undergraduate Student Success: A Four-Year Study
This article reports on a four-year study done at the University of North Texas to compare variables of student success (GPA, pass or fail status in course, and retention) in students that attended library instruction sessions and students who did not. It finds a positive correlation between attending library instruction and student success.
