The study being undertaken was to ascertain the effect or effects of different firing conditions and colorants on glazes composed of wood ash from two trees indigenous to Texas. The problem was divided into two parts: first, to identify the best mixtures using the selected vegetable ash; second, to alter successful glazes with set percentages of colorants. The main objective of the study was to evaluate findings resulting from the variation of elements, firing conditions, and colorants used and to select successful glazes.

Symphony No. 1 is a three-movement work for orchestra. The movements have the following tempo indications: (I) Allegro ma non troppo, (II) Lento, and (III) Allegro giocoso. The composition is scored for 3 flutes (3rd flute interchangeable with piccolo), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, 2 bassoons, contra-bassoon, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, tuba, percussion (timpani, snare drum, and triangle), and the usual complement of strings.

Parody may be defined as a humorous or sarcastic imitation of a serious piece of literature. It appears, following this interpretation, that Carlos Ordoñez composed his marionette opera, Musica Dalla Parodie d'Alceste as a parody on Gluck's Alceste. A microfilm of the original manuscript of Ordoñez was procured from the National Szecheny Library in Budapest, the possessor of the only copy of the work.

John the Baptist is a passion focusing on the sufferings of John in six movements for contralto, tenor, baritone, and bass soloists; chorus of mixed voices; boys' choir; and orchestra.

"Symphonic Overture" is constructed like a symphony in miniature with the traditional sonata-allegro form used as a vehicle to expose the three contrasting actions, and to combine them into one concise movement.

In surveying the field of instrumental literature during the past one hundred fifty years it is notable that the majority of the larger orchestral works have been written ni the sonata form. This fact is the primary reason for the writers selection of the sonata form, which is employed in the Symphonic Piece in D Major.

The purpose of writing the Overture for Orchestra is two-fold: first, to produce a short orchestral work in the modern idiom; second, to compose a symphonic piece within the technical scope of semi-professional orchestras such as college and civic organizations.

The problem of classifying variations according to technical plan and stylistic treatment centers on the determination of which elements of the theme (melody, harmonic scheme, structure) are retained in each component variation and the compositional methods (elaboration, embellishment, motivic fragmentation) which are applied.

The first movement of the "String Quartet" opens with a gradual unfolding of the lead motive in the first six measures of the section marked "Largo." The second theme is heard in the first two measures of the section marked "Moderato" after a false start by the first violin. The third movement utilizes the essential dance characteristics of the "Minuet" marking.

The orchestral interpolations in this melodrama are written to support and enhance the spoken parts rather than compete with them. The alternating music and speech result in an intricately woven pattern which presents, ultimately, one dramatic picture. While the fragmented quality of the production could present many problems to a composer, Benda has woven the dramatic and the musical aspects of the composition together so well that one does not detract from the other.

Primarily the objective was to compose a piece for concert band in a large form with the ultimate aim of submitting the number for publication for perfromance by a college, or good high school band, with the additional hope this number might eventually be included on a high school band contest list. With the thought of publication in mind, it was necessary to cross-cue certain parts and limit the technical scope of the composition.

The problem of this study was to make a transcription of Lincoln Portrait for symphonic band. There is a drastic need for music of a better quality and music by modern composers for symphonic band.The problems of this study concern the following major phases: first, the instrumentation of the work;second an analysis from the point of view of the problem; third, a band transcription of Lincoln Portrait for symphonic band.

The first movement is probably best catalogued as highly altered sonata-allegro in form. Exposition of the main thematic material is in the form of a fugue. The main thematic germ of this entire work may be found in the first three ascending fourths.

This report consists of a presentation of prices paid for the various classifications and grades of cattle sold in the Fort Worth Livestock Market during 1952; a comparison of 1951-1952 prices showing a sharp decline in the price of all grades and classifications which began in June of 1952; and an examination of some of the major factors contributing to the decline in cattle prices as reflected in the Livestock Market, Fort Worth, Texas. From a study of cattle prices that prevailed in the Fort Worth market during 1951 and 1952, and a consideration of some of the factors contributing thereto, the following conclusions are drawn: First, prices of all grades of cattle soared to unusually high levels during 1951, thereby accentuating the drop in price which occurred in the latter part of 1952. Second, the withholding of cattle from slaughter, during a cattle build-up process, rather than a scarcity of cattle in this country was primarily responsible for extremely high prices in 1951. Third, cattle production in this country has progressed in cycles of eight to ten years duration of each; the period under consideration was on the build-up side of the present cycle which began in 1949; and …

A series of four stations for sampling the waters of the Red Rivers and Lake Texoma was established. Water samples from top, middle, and bottom levels of these four stations were taken on monthly intervals during periods of homothermousity and on two-week intervals during periods of thermal stratification. These samples were analysed for the cations sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, and for the anions normal carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride, nitrate, water hardness (expressed as calcium carbonate), and phosphates. Determinations for dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, temperature, and specific conductance were performed. Using these data, vertical profiles of the lake at these four stations were established. From the study of these data it was concluded that the waters of the Red River improve in quality coincident with impoundment, and that these improvements are sufficient to warrant the use of these waters.

This study was designed to identify the knowledge and skills that draftsmen employed in the greater Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas metropolitan area should posses. This study was conducted to identify the following as related to draftsmen in the Dallas-Forth Worth, Texas area: What kind of education and experience is required to prospective draftsmen? What are the general duties of draftsmen? How much emphasis is placed upon knowledge of and skill in the use of drafting equipment? How important are the basic concepts and principles of drafting usually taught in drafting courses? What methods are used to reproduce drawings?

The general purpose of this investigation is to examine the values of print making as compared with drawing and painting in their respective relationships as a part of the junior-high-school art program. The specific purposes of the investigation are: 1. To determine the values which are common to both the print-making arts and the drawing-painting arts. 2. To discover the values which are unique in the print-making arts. 3. To determine which of the print-making processes belong in the junior high school. 4. To recommend the grade placement and limitations of print-making for the junior high school. A conservative general conclusion, based upon objective evidence, can safely be drawn to the effect that in all phases of the learning experiences print making was found to be as valuable as painting and drawing. Its values were compared with respect to specific art development, to general educational growth, to socialization, and to character training.

The problem of this study is the economic status of college teachers in Texas, with emphasis on actual support afforded that profession in the past and in the present; and objective statistical analysis of the ability of the state to more adequately support the profession now and in the future, and the theoretical and actual importance which that economic status presages for out state and society. Actual support of higher education will be measured by salaries and expenditures; ability to support will be measured by the relative wealth of each state in per capita income.

The organization of the Emergency Conservation Work was found to possess many faults. The Seventy-Fifth Congress, taking cognizance of some of the more glaring imperfections, approved a measure reorganizing and re-establishing the Emergency Conservation Work under the name of The Civilian Conservation Corp. The bill eliminated many of the defects of the former organization, and invested authority and defined duties and regulations in such a manner that a more efficient institution resulted.
