Comparable Dissonance as Used by Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria in Three Masses (open access)

Comparable Dissonance as Used by Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria in Three Masses

The purpose of this thesis is to give an account of the comparable use of dissonance of Palestrina, Lassus, and Victoria through harmonic analysis and statistical comparison, illustrating the stylistic differences among the three composers works. The thesis does. not attempt to cover text setting, melodic construction, ranges, or aesthetic evaluation of composition other than that which pertains to dissonance. The analysis of dissonance was done with primary consideration being given to the vertical structure of the harmony, observing the linear structure only with relation to the approach and resolution of that dissonance.

A Comparative Study of Three Groups of Intellectually Superior Students who have Completed Two or More Years of College (open access)

A Comparative Study of Three Groups of Intellectually Superior Students who have Completed Two or More Years of College

The purpose of this study was to compare the activities and achievements in college of a population of three groups of academically able students who participated in a high school honors program. The population consisted of (1) those who completed an honors program, (2) those who dropped out of an honors program, and (3) those who entered an honors program at a time later than the entry of the first two groups. This study was concerned with discovering distinguishing activities and achievements of the male and female members of the three groups through an analysis and comparison of data relative to the groups after their completion of two or more years of college.

Cycloadditions of Dichloroketene (open access)

Cycloadditions of Dichloroketene

An investigation of the cycloaddition behavior of dichloroketene with various types of olefins seemed in order to determine if dichloroketene behaved similarly to dialkylketenes. It was anticipated that a study of this type would indicate the reactivity of dichloroketene to various types of olefinic compounds and thus establish if the ease of cycloaddition with dichloroketene parallels the nucleophilicity of the olefin as it does in dialkylketenes.

A Generalized Study of the Conjugate and Inner-Product Functions (open access)

A Generalized Study of the Conjugate and Inner-Product Functions

The usual practice in any discussion of an inner-product space is to restrict the field over which the inner-product space is defined to the field of complex numbers. In defining the inner-product function, (x,y), a second function is needed; namely the conjugate function (x,y)* so that (x,y) ± (y,x)*. We will attempt to generalize this concept by investigating the existence of a conjugate function defined on fields other than the field of complex numbers and relate this function to an inner-product function defined on a linear space L over these fields.

Music Education in the Protestant Church (open access)

Music Education in the Protestant Church

The purpose of this study was to determine and describe ways in which music education can be used in Protestant churches. During the last twenty years, participation in church music has grown very rapidly. The increase is a result of the growth of music in general. Music has become an important part of home, school, church, and community functions. This is evidenced by many facts: symphony orchestras, as well as community instrumental and choral groups have increased in number to the extent that there are more today than at any time in history; school music has taken tremendous strides since 19257 and church music programs have been developed to such a degree that they attract large numbers of people. In spite of the tremendous advance of music in general, and in the field of church music in particular, there is still much that needs to be done in church music. For example, when "Sacred Music" is mentioned to an average group of Americans, some will respond with blank and uninterested stares. Others will mention some of the well-worn sentimentalized, semi-religious songs such as "He," "The Man Upstairs," "You'll Never Walk Alone," or other examples of commercialized religion, Those people, and …
