Transition in the form of municipal government is always a complex and challenging task. The process involves serious risks of instability in a municipality's affairs, and this in turn may have adverse consequences for the community as a whole. But at the same time, changes in the form of government and in the personnel responsible for the management of public affairs may hold promise of improvements, which will benefit a city and its citizens. This thesis examines the experience of Denton, Texas, in making a transition from a mayor-commission to a council-manager form of government. T his major governmental change in Denton required several years. The period of transition examined in this study will be from 1955 to the end of 1961.

American dialect studies have progressed rapidly within the last thirty years, but the progress seems to be concentrated within the Southern and New England areas of the United States. Though there have been studies made in other areas, they are sporadic, no work of any significance having yet been published. Texas, unfortunately, is one area of rich dialectal significance which has been neglected, with the exception of Oma Stanley's work on the dialect in East Texas. Even though that work is somewhat dated in many respects, few scholars have seen fit to undertake a revision of Stanley's work or a study of other areas of Texas which would be comparable to The Speech of East Texas. Several master's theses add to the small number of studies concerned with Texas dialects, notably Roy Elders' study of the stressed back vowels in the speech of Parker County, but such studies are also too few. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between manifest anxiety and orality as related to smokers and non-smokers as indicated on the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale and the Blaky Pitres Test (4). From the above theoretical background, the following relationships are hypothesized: Hypothesis I: Smokers will show more anxiety than nonsmokers. hypothesis 2: Female smokers will show more anxiety than male smokers. Hypothesis 3: Among the high anxiety group smokers will show more orality than non-smokers.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the pressure-flow relationships in the isolated canine cerebral vascular bed. These relationships in vessels which supply an organ surrounded by bone are theoretically influenced by limiting factors which are not present in those vessels surrounded by soft tissue. An evaluation of the extent of these limitations is essential to thorough understanding of the dynamics of the cerebral vascular bed.

The purpose of this study had been to design and test a corona column and an insulating gas distribution system for a small tandem Van de Graaff. The intent of this paper is to describe the gas handling system and to compare experimentally the effects of corona electrode shape on the corona current carried between adjacent sections of the column.

The major problem of this study is to identify through the use of the Critical Incident Technique the main requirements for successful ministerial service in the South Carolina Annual Conference of the Methodist Church, insofar as these requirements can be determined through lay observations and judgments. The following sub-problems are closely related to the major problem: 1. What special demands are made upon the minister by special subgroups within the church--e.g., youth, women's groups--in regard to pastoral behavior? 2. How important are the roles assigned to the minister by the church itself--e.g., preacher, teacher, counselor, visitor, administrator, priest? 3. Do churches of varying sizes differ in their expectations of the Ministerial office--e.g., do large churches place greater emphasis upon preaching? 4. Does educational training and/or the salary of the minister correlate with the number of successful incidents reported by respondents?

The problem of this study was to determine the effects of typewriting practice with selected auditory stimulation on student achievement in typewriting. It included the following sub-problems: 1. Determining the extent to which typewriting practice with selected auditory stimulation affected ability to compose at the typewriter. 2. Determining the extent to which typewriting practice with selected auditory stimulation affected ability to typewrite from dictation. 3. Determining the extent to which typewriting practice with selected auditory stimulation affected ability to typewrite from copy.

The primary purpose was to determine whether there were differences in the amount of change produced by two plans of elementary school organization for the instruction of rapid learners in order to develop a sound policy of organizing the elementary school. A secondary purpose was to determine the effects of the two plans on other pupils in the sections being studied.
