To Determine If the Industrial Arts Teachers of Texas Need Or Want State-Wide Industrial Arts Supervision (open access)

To Determine If the Industrial Arts Teachers of Texas Need Or Want State-Wide Industrial Arts Supervision

Industrial Arts today is included in a majority of the large high school curricula, and most school administrators do not consider the school program well rounded unless such work is offered. However, the Industrial Arts teachers of Texas do not have the advantage of a supervisor in their field of work. Each school is an entity in itself. There is no concerted state-wide program, no link between widely diversified needs and situations, no one to advise the young teacher beginning his work, and no one to aid the more experienced teachers in different situations. The State Department of Education recommends a uniform course of study, but each teacher is free to use his own interpretation of what he should teach and what he should not teach. Educators, mindful of the beneficial results of supervision in other fields, have asked for a State Supervision of Industrial Arts, and provision has been made in the next school budget for such an official if the Legislature approves. 1 The purpose of this investigation is to determine, if possible, whether a supervisory program is needed or wanted by the Industrial Arts teachers of Texas.

The Genio-Hyoid Vocal Interference (open access)

The Genio-Hyoid Vocal Interference

Both science and empirical knowledge seem to indicate that anatomical considerations relating to potential muscular interference be established at the incipiency of the serious study of voice. Experience shows that if this aspect of vocal development is not pursued with utmost diligence, an early deterioration of the vocal instrument is possible many years before a normal expectancy. It has been discovered, also, that the study of articulation, pronunciation, modulation, emphasis, gestures and interpretation seem to avoid, primarily, the necessity of muscular training, per. This thesis will not include, in detail, the aspects of the use of the breath, except in a perfunctory manner. The same can be said of resonance and diction. It will endeavor, however, to indicate the muscular differences of the singing and swallowing actions. Furthermore, it will advance some suggestions for the avoidance of constrictive muscular influences which might impede the singing musculature. Finally, a phonatory process will be presented for consideration as a muscular mechanism to be made operative in connection with a direct control procedure.

A Stylistic Analysis of Béla Bartók's "Mikrokosmos" (open access)

A Stylistic Analysis of Béla Bartók's "Mikrokosmos"

Bela Bartok's art is a perfect microcosm of the art of the twentieth century. It is interwoven with the musical conceptions and techniques of the great Western European masters, without in any way obscuring the individuality, the national consciousness, and the personal style and originality of the composer's own musical language -- a language rooted in the glorious tradition of his people. In the six volumes of the Mikrokosmos, or "little world," Bartok has presented a series of progressively difficult pieces designed -- if not intentionally, at least effectively -- to introduce to the piano student a technical approach to piano playing in the modern idiom. Admittedly, the etude does not cover every pianistic technical problem. It clearly shows that Bartok fully appreciates the worth of the great wealth of piano literature, and does not prescribe his method as a "cure-all" for the technical problems of piano playing.

A Digest of Published Opinions About the Teaching of Music Reading in the Elementary School (open access)

A Digest of Published Opinions About the Teaching of Music Reading in the Elementary School

Throughout the history of public school music in the United States, one of the problems which has continually been in the foreground is that of music reading, It is primarily a problem for the elementary school as that is the place where reading must begin in order for the children's interest and ability to be balanced. The elementary school is the focal point for the teaching of all skills and tools in learning. Certainly, reading is one of the major tools in the process of musical learning. In many cases the ability of the students to read music has been the basic criterion of the entire music program. Davison states that the aim and end of a large percentage of instruction has for so long been to train students to sing music at sight that it has grown to be a fetish. While such a standard as that is an over-emphasis of reading, most music educators will agree that the place of music reading in the elementary school is of utmost importance. The differences of opinions lie not so much in the goals to be reached as in the methods of reaching them. The purpose of this study is not …

A Study of the Treatment of Time in the Plays of Lyly, Marlowe, Greene, and Peele (open access)

A Study of the Treatment of Time in the Plays of Lyly, Marlowe, Greene, and Peele

Because Shakespeare borrowed so many ideas and devices from other writers, we wonder whether he also borrowed the trick of double time from some of his predecessors; therefore one of the purposes of this study is to discover whether or not this device was original with Shakespeare. In this study I have considered the works of John Lyly, Christopher Marlowe, Robert Greene, and George Peele because these four seem to have influenced Shakespeare more than did any of the other of his immediate predecessors. To discover what influence, if any, these men had upon Shakespeare ts treatment of time is not, however, the only purpose of this study; for I am also interested in the characteristics of the works of these men for their own values, independent of any influence which they may have had on the works of Shakespeare.
