This study examines the effect of employment on the school life, progress, citizenship, and character of middle school children. Data for the study came from an examination of students attending middle school in Odessa, Texas.

The conditions selected, those which are common to the schoolroom or home environment, were chewing gum, physical education classes, room confusion, rhythm band, singing, and recorded music. This study attempted to determine to what degree, if any, each of these distracting environmental conditions affect the process of study in the first grade.
