The problem of this study is to determine the administrative practices for securing the optimum use of instructional space in colleges. This necessitates the development of an instrument to evaluate these practices.

This study of Franz Liszt presents the Hungarian master as a figure of conflicting forces, a sort of conflicting forces, a sort of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde of music. In other words, Liszt was a dual personality. In this study of Liszt's major piano works, it will become evident that several factors were vital in the ultimate realization of these works.

The purpose of this paper will be to compare the Hindemith theory of harmonic tension as set forth in his book, Craft of Musical Composition, with his actual use of harmonic tension in compositional practice. The compositions used for this study are Hindemith's Sonaten für Klavier, published in 1936, consisting of three sonatas*. Although these pieces were published one year before the theory book, it seems reasonable to assume that Hindemith was at least formulating the ideas that would go into his book, and quite possibly was already writing it. The copyright date of the book is 1937. Therefore, any conclusions derived from the following analysis will not be affected to any degree by the time lapse between the writing of the two works in question. Analysis of the Sonaten für Klavier by Paul Hindemith reveals the fact that each of the sonatas is very different from the other two; hence, conclusions which apply to all three works are not generally possible.

The Requiem, for mixed chorus (4 and 8 parts), two brass quartets (2 trumpets, horn and trombone each), timpani (4) and organ, is divided into four sections or movements: I. Introit and Kyrie II. Sanctus III. Pie Jesu IV. "Take Thou Comfort". The principal feature of the Requiem is the cyclic treatment of the two main themes. These will be referred to as the "Introit" theme and the "Kyrie" theme, in that these are the sections in which they first appear, respectively.

It would be impossible to trace the evolution of the form of the scherzo without treating also to some extent the history of the minuet, as the scherzo would hardly have come into being in the way it did had there not been the minuet, even though as the scherzo grew to maturity it resembled less and less its parent-form. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of isorhythm in two of Arnold Schoenburg's chamber works, the Third and Fourth String Quartets. The study of rhythm in twelve-note music has been generally relegated to a position less prominent than that held by the study of any of the other important aspects of the style. This condition is due probably to the fact that rhythm underwent less change with the advent of the twelve-note school of composition than melody, counterpoint, or harmony experienced. However, Rufer states that "rhythm has a special formal function in Schoenberg's twelve-note music, in addition to its motivic function and to that of creating subdivisions.

This study, "Surface Textures of Unglazed Pottery," will record and evaluate a series of experiments performed that can be achieved on unglazed ceramic ware....The problem will be limited to experiments using a red clay from Horatio, Arkansas, a buff clay from Trenton, New Jersey, and a tan clay from Athens, Texas. The specimens will be fired at the temperature of 1643 degrees Fahrenheit...Experiments performed with the three clays will fall into three categories: (1) textures resulting from introduction of foreign matter into the clay (2) textures resulting from surface treatments of green ware and (3) textures resulting from surface treatments of bisque-fired ware. The experiments will be described and the fired clay specimens -- tiles 2"x2"x1/4" will be evaluated according to esthetic and practical standards.

The purpose of this study is to show the use of random sampling in solving certain mathematical problems. The origin of random numbers to be used in sampling is discussed and methods of sampling from known distributions are then given together with an indication that the sampling procedures are unbiased.

The investigator became interested in the status of basketball goal shooting in modern girls' basketball as compared to that of boys' goal shooting. Types of shots, their frequency and accuracy, and the zones on the court from which they were taken, were all considered as components of the status of basketball goal shooting. It was on the basis of this interest that the present study was undertaken.

The purpose of the problem was to develop a laboratory technique for mass culturing of the aquatic actinomycetes. In order to solve the problem, it was necessary to devise a suitable culture chamber that would nurture the various species in both primary and secondary stages. It was also important to provide an adequate medium for growth of these organisms. Finally, the construction of the culture chambers must provide for a continuous exhaust of the taste and odor compounds so that the production of these components could be correlated with growth stages.

The purpose of this thesis is to give the reader an insight into the development of solo trumpet literature as well as to present historical information concerning the development of the trumpet and the effect it had on the literature written for that instrument. Only music originally written for trumpet will be considered as the many transcriptions of older music that now appears are not characteristic of the idiomatic writing for trumpet at that time.

Imidazole derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinones are found to have biological activity which interferes with the utilization of vitamin K or of the purines since they have groups common to these two classes of compounds. This thesis shows the preparation of some 1-substituted-naphthimidazole-4,9-diones for possible biological activity.

The purpose of this study is fourfold: first, to study the local industrial resources; second, to assemble and analyze data concerning the availability of industrial resources for instructional enrichment of the industrial arts program; third, to assemble and analyze data concerning the extent of use of available industrial resources in teaching industrial arts in the Dallas Independent School District; and fourth, to make recommendations and conclusions based on the findings of the study.
