This dissertation is a study of supernatural doubles in Victorian literature. It argues that these doubles expand our understanding of gender variance in the Victorian period. The texts in this dissertation privilege gender non-binarism through their depictions of materiality, gender embodiment, and temporality.

Perceptions of Charter School Administrators and Teachers about Factors Accounting for Academic Effectiveness

This qualitative case study examines academic performance effectiveness (or lack of effectiveness) of a charter school based on the perceptions of the administrator and teachers. This study explores what they perceived to be effective/ineffective, the reasons for this effectiveness/ineffectiveness, and the solutions to any identified challenges/problems at their charter school as they relate to students' academic performance. The participants in the study were from one charter school in a charter school system in North Central Texas. The study utilized surveys and interviews as sources of data that revealed administrator and teacher perception of what they considered to be the strengths and weaknesses of the school, factors accounting for the strengths and weaknesses, and possible solutions to the weaknesses of their charter school as related to students' academic performance. Five perceived strengths were identified to be instruction, curriculum, personnel, mission statement, and parent involvement. Likewise, three perceived weaknesses were identified to be instruction, curriculum, and parent involvement. Recommendations of the study for practitioners included recruitment and employment of preservice teachers from colleges and universities, partnering with alternative certification programs, creating a program of professional development, creating professional learning communities, creating a parent committee, and partnering with local agencies and community businesses. …

Modeling Email Phishing Attacks

Cheating, beguiling, and misleading information exist all around us; understanding deception and its consequences is crucial in our information environment. This study investigates deception in phishing emails that successfully bypassed Microsoft 365 filtering system. We devised a model that explains why some people are deceived and how targeted individuals and organizations can prevent or counter attacks. The theoretical framework used in this study is Anderson's functional ontology construction (FOC). The methodology involves quantitative and qualitative descriptive design, where the data source is the set of phishing emails archived from a Tier 1 University. We looked for term frequency-inverse document frequency (Tf-idf) and the distribution of words over documents (topic modeling) and found the subjects of phishing emails that targeted educational organizations are related to finances, jobs, and technologies. Also, our analysis shows the phishing emails in the dataset come under six categories; reward, urgency, curiosity, fear, job, and entertainment. Results indicate that staff and students were primarily targeted, and a list of the most used verbs for deception was compiled. John B. Denton: the Bigger-than Life Story of the Fighting Parson and Texas Ranger

Denton County and the City of Denton are named for pioneer preacher, lawyer, and Indian fighter John B. Denton, but little has been known about him. He was an orphan in frontier Arkansas who became a circuit-riding Methodist preacher and an important member of a movement of early settlers bringing civilization to North Texas. After becoming a ranger on the frontier, he ultimately was killed in the Tarrant Expedition, a Texas Ranger raid on a series of villages inhabited by various Caddoan and other tribes near Village Creek on May 24, 1841. Denton’s true story has been lost or obscured by the persistent mythologizing by publicists for Texas, especially by pulp western writer Alfred W. Arrington. Cochran separates the truth from the myth in this meticulous biography, which also contains a detailed discussion of the controversy surrounding the burial of John B. Denton and offers some alternative scenarios for what happened to his body after his death on the frontier.

Rare Integrity: A Portrait of L. W. Payne, Jr.

Leonidas Warren Payne, Jr. (1873-1945), counted Robert Frost among his friends and a member of the inner circle of poets who embraced him and sought his advice. He altered forever the perception of Texas when he created the Texas Folklore Society that continues to record, publish, and promote Texas history, myth, music, and customs. He guided J. Frank Dobie back into The University of Texas fold, where Dobie produced his finest work and established a voice for Texas literature. L. W. Payne, Jr., influenced generations of American school children through his anthologies that became basic English textbooks. Drawing upon Payne’s own writing, interviews with former colleagues and students, and private letters lain undisclosed since Payne’s death, Rare Integrity reveals a portrait of a man whose great gift of creative generosity and warmth of heart enabled him to see a person as the person wished to be seen.

Times Remembered: the Final Years of the Bill Evans Trio

In the late 1970s legendary pianist Bill Evans was at the peak of his career. He revolutionized the jazz trio (bass, piano, drums) by giving each part equal emphasis in what jazz historian Ted Gioia called a “telepathic level” of interplay. It was an ideal opportunity for a sideman, and after auditioning in 1978, Joe La Barbera was ecstatic when he was offered the drum chair, completing the trio with Evans and bassist Marc Johnson. In Times Remembered, La Barbera and co-author Charles Levin provide an intimate fly-on-the-wall peek into Evans’s life, critical recording sessions, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes of life on the road. Joe regales the trio’s magical connection, a group that quickly gelled to play music on the deepest and purest level imaginable. He also watches his dream gig disappear, a casualty of Evans’s historical drug abuse when the pianist dies in a New York hospital emergency room in 1980. But La Barbera tells this story with love and respect, free of judgment, showing Evans’s humanity and uncanny ability to transcend physical weakness and deliver first-rate performances at nearly every show.

The Bell Ringer

This is the story of Victor Rodriguez, star track athlete and San Antonio educator. From his earliest days in South Texas in the 1940s he broke many barriers. As a football player and track star he set records and won trophies at Edna High School, at Victoria College, and at North Texas State College. At each stage of his education, he often found himself the only Mexican American in his group. He developed his sports prowess from nine years of early morning running to the church in Edna, to ring the bell before Mass. He earned the first Hispanic scholarships as an athlete at both Victoria Junior College and North Texas State College. After graduating in 1955, he began a career in the San Antonio School District, ultimately retiring in 1994 after twelve years as Superintendent of the District. As a pioneer Mexican American educator in San Antonio, he brought dignity and respect to the people of the Westside, where he remains a role model today.

Investigation of Porous Ceramic Structure by Freeze-Casting

The design and fabrication of porous ceramic materials with anisotropic properties has, in recent years, gained popularity due to their potential application in various areas that include medical, energy, defense, space, and aerospace. Freeze-casting is an effective, low-cost, and safe method as a wet shaping technique to create these structures. To control the morphology of these materials, many critical factors were found to play an important role. In this dissertation, the processing parameters of the magnetic field-assisted freeze-casting method were optimized with a focus on comparing the structure obtained using vertical and horizontal magnetic fields and understanding the mechanisms that occur under different freezing modes. More specifically, this processing method was used to produce Al2O3 and B4C porous ceramics materials with unidirectionally-aligned pore channels. The effect of the vertical and horizontal magnetic field strength and direction, concentration of magnetic material (Fe3O4), cooling rate, and freezing time were examined. The resulting ceramics with highly aligned pore channels were infiltrated with molten metal to create metal matrix composites. The mechanical properties of these structures were measured and were subsequently correlated to their morphology and composition.

Alloy Design, Processing and Deformation Behavior of Metastable High Entropy Alloys

This dissertation presents an assortment of research aimed at understanding the composition-dependence of deformation behavior and the response to thermomechanical processing, to enable efficient design and processing of low stacking fault energy (SFE) high entropy alloy (HEAs). The deformation behavior and SFE of four low SFE HEAs were predicted and experimentally verified using electron microscopy and in-situ neutron diffraction. A new approach of employing a minimization function to refine and improve the accuracy of a semi-empirically derived expression relating composition with SFE is demonstrated. Ultimately, by employing the minimization function, the average difference between experimental and predicted SFE was found to be 2.64 mJ m-2. Benchmarking with currently available approaches suggests that integrating minimization functions can substantially improve prediction accuracy and promote efficient HEA design with expansion of databases. Additionally, in-situ neutron diffraction was used to present the first in-situ measurement of the interspacing between stacking faults (SFs) which were correlated with work hardening behavior. Electron transparent specimens (< ~100 nm thick) were used in order to resolve nanoscale planar faults instead of the thicker sub-sized specimens (on the order of millimeters in thickness) which exhibit the classical stages III work hardening behavior characteristic of low SFE metals and alloys. …

Multi-Omics Based Investigation of Distinct Early Oxidative Stress Responses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae to Various Oxidants

The early signaling mechanism(s) that control oxidant perception and signal transduction leading to activation of the antioxidant defense response and survival mechanisms tailored toward specific oxidative insult remains unknown. Here, we identified early changes in metabolome and proteome of S. cerevisiae in response to hydrogen peroxide, menadione, cumene hydroperoxide, and diamide. Firstly, global untargeted LC–MS/MS analysis allowed us to identify 196 proteins in response to hydrogen peroxide, 569 proteins in response to cumene hydroperoxide, 369 proteins in response to menadione and 207 proteins in response to diamide that were significantly regulated at 3 min after exposure. We revealed that each oxidant triggered unique signaling mechanisms associated with survival and repair mechanisms as early as 3 minutes of post treatment with a set of proteins that uniquely responded to the particular oxidant. In addition, our comprehensive pathway analysis revealed signaling pathways and the molecular players that are regulated globally by all oxidants at early time points namely Ran, mTOR, Rho, and eIF2. Additionally, we analyzed metabolic response using targeted GC-MS/MS that allowed us to identity 35 metabolites that were consistently detected in all samples at 3 min of exposure. Probabilistic Modeling for Whole Metagenome Profiling

To address the shortcomings in existing Markov model implementations in handling large amount of metagenomic data with comparable or better accuracy in classification, we developed a new algorithm based on pseudo-count supplemented standard Markov model (SMM), which leverages the power of higher order models to more robustly classify reads at different taxonomic levels. Assessment on simulated metagenomic datasets demonstrated that overall SMM was more accurate in classifying reads to their respective taxa at all ranks compared to the interpolated methods. Higher order SMMs (9th order or greater) also outperformed BLAST alignments in assigning taxonomic labels to metagenomic reads at different taxonomic ranks (genus and higher) on tests that masked the read originating species (genome models) in the database. Similar results were obtained by masking at other taxonomic ranks in order to simulate the plausible scenarios of non-representation of the source of a read at different taxonomic levels in the genome database. The performance gap became more pronounced with higher taxonomic levels. To eliminate contaminations in datasets and to further improve our alignment-free approach, we developed a new framework based on a genome segmentation and clustering algorithm. Structural Analysis and Finite Element Modeling of Aluminum Honeycomb Sandwich Structures

The objective of this research is to determine how the sandwich's physical characteristics have an impact on the mechanical properties, determine under what conditions the specimens will be lighter and mechanically stronger, and determine if the use of an aluminum honeycomb sandwich as a construction material is feasible. The research has aimed at the use of aluminum sandwiches as light and strong material. The study of the structural layers' damage resistance and tolerance demonstrated that the top and bottom layers play a crucial role. The thesis presents three test results from aluminum honeycomb sandwich compression horizontal, compressive vertical, and bending tests. Also, each group was displayed mechanically and simulated in Abaqus. The study determines the mechanical properties such as maximum elastic stress-strain, ultimate stress-strain, fracture point, density, poison ration, young modulus, and maximum deflection was determined. The energy absorbed by the FEA, such modulus of elasticity, resilience, and toughness, the crack propagation, the test's view shows aluminum honeycomb behaved like a brittle material with both compression test. And the maximum deflection, crack propagation, shear forces, bending moment, and images illustrated that the layers play a crucial role in the 3-point bend test.
