An Investigation Into the Use of the Computer as a Design Tool in the Creation of Modular Sculpture

The idea of using the computer as a design tool seemed ideal for my sculpture. The simplicity of my sculptures and their repeating elements are easily rendered by computer technology. The computer allowed me to perceive my designs accurately from different perspectives. My hand-rendered designs, by contrast, were difficult to read, especially from multiple views. The computer sharpened my designs, while showing me the different views in less time. Although the designs were computer assisted, I commanded all of the manipulations. This procedure is different from computer-generated design, in which the computer is programmed to do the designing itself. My investigation of the computer as a design tool answered several questions.

Spontaneous Imagery Within Shaped Formats

The primary concerns and problems which were addressed in this project were: 1. were the shaped formats more of less effective when derived directly from maps and/or photographic panoramas as opposed to deriving them from my own memory and imagination? 2.Was the negative space in which the intaglio prints float, more or less effective than the paintings and drawings which have no bordering negative space? 3. What differences exist in the spontaneous imagery when putting down the initial marks, with my eyes closed, as opposed to when my eyes were open. 4. Did values painted, drawn, or printed over the spontaneous imagery expand the spacial implications and enhance the overall coordination? 5. What problems arose in construction of the shaped formats, how they were solved, and what was the best way to finish the edges for presentation?

Also, imagery--so essential to the narrative quality of the work-- was to be expanded upon to provide a constant freshness that avoided repetition or variation for its own sake.

Combining Electroformed Copper and Raku

A major emphasis in my graduate studies in ceramics at North Texas State University has been on the production of raku wall pieces. Raku appealed to me for its unusual metallic glaze effects and the accidental qualities of the glazes and clay bodies due to the smoking reduction that takes place after the piece is removed from the kiln. During this same period I was also interested in and experimenting with the use of electroforming as a method of jewelry making. Again, the accidental qualities of this process were appealing. It was during these experiments, especially those involving non-conductive surfaces, that i frist considered applying the process to large ceramic pieces. The stoneware pieces were limited in size since they were to be developed into pieces of jewelry.

This study involves an investigation of artist's intent (purpose) and the effects of altering the dimensional structure of a print utilizing the materials as imagery. Concerning the nature of the creative project, The following questions arose: 1. How will changing my current two-dimensional format to a three-dimensional presentation produce the desired intensity of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual depth? 2. What kinds of materials can be combined to effectively produce the desired imagery? 3. What technical problems arise in regard to a supporting armature in the three dimensional structures? 4. How is the artist's intent communicated through the imagery created in the three-dimensional structures?

Clothing Derived From Lepidoptera Forms

Each design attempted to fulfill three requirements. The design should be effective as displayed in an exhibition; it should retain its sculptural effect when worn; and it should convey a feeling of envelopment for the wearer. In addition to these requirements, the seven pieces were designed and constructed with four problems in mind. First, how did changes in media or technique effect each garment in terms of surface embellishment, drapability, et cetera? Second, how did the scale of a garment alter the medium or technique used and the pattern shape used? Third, what were the design limitations of both the folded rectangle construction and the wing-sleeve design with triangular pattern shapes? Fourth, were some designs more successful than others in creating an envelopment for the body?

Handmade Paper as an Artistic Medium

The purpose of this study was to bring a new conceptual quantitative balance to the existing elements in my work thereby establishing a new clarity. It was felt that the above accomplishment would bring about new worth; so that when my work was perceived it would have a greater impact upon the viewer. An expectant visual richness in the imagery would prove that it had been strengthened through simplification of the relationship of form to content. This new visual richness would bring about a new conceptual level to the work, because it had been synthesized into a meaningful statement.

What part do cultural and anthropological sources play in the development of the shelter symbol? 3. How does surface embellishment affect the shelter symbol? 4. The Development and Articulation of Cross-Cultural Imagery

The purpose of this project was to develop a body of work in which the content has probable, if not definite, cross-cultural application. It was my intent to analyze images for their content and underlying themes. This collection of "image content" was to be used in the production of a body of work which hopefully would transcend cultural bias or limitations. I consulted art and anthropological texts, books, and periodicals (listed in bibliography) which contained images produced by different cultures.

What effects do overlapping, shape size, color and value have upon the figure/ground relationship? The portion of the investigation concerning the block-out process has two questions. They are as follow: 1. How do I begin the block-out process? 2. How do I decide what to block out?

For my creative project I produced five life-size pieces consisting of human and animal figures constructed in clay and mixed media. Rather than creating figures around or as part of an environment, the figure, being the primary subject, dictated what type and how much of an environment I built. I explored the manipulation of the materials in order to determine how best to produce emotional impact.

Each system, illustrated in the figures, attempted to create a different approach in using the light mediums.

Based upon this premise, the author attempted, with the cooperation of the art committee of the Dallas Junior League, to test the aesthetic judgement of selected groups of children in the Dallas Public Schools by evaluating their reactions to an exhibition of common household articles currently available on the Dallas market.

The Indigenous Architecture of Fredericksburg, Texas

In this study sixteen early stone buildings at Fredericksburg, Texas, are described and evaluated as examples of indigenous architecture. Chapter II presents a brief history of the founding of Fredericksburg. Chapter III presents a description of the town site and a discussion of the native materials as used by the pioneer immigrants in the construction of residences and other buildings. Chapter IV is devoted to a detailed description of fourteen buildings as specific examples of the indigenous architecture. Representative photographs of the buildings as they now appear, as well as floor plans, illustrate the text. Two early churches of the indigenous type, accompanied by photographs and floor plans, are discussed in Chapter V. In Chapter VI a summary of the study is given and conclusions are presented.

Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass as "Negation of Women"

The purpose of this study was to determine whether The Large Glass was a negation of women for Marcel Duchamp. The thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter I is the introduction to the thesis. CHapter II includes a synopsis of the major interpretations of The Large Glass. Duchamp's statements in regard to The Large Glass are also included in Chapter II. Chapter III explains how The Large Glass works through the use of Duchamp's notes. Chapter IV investigates Duchamp's negation of women statement in several ways. His personal relationships with relatives including his wives and other women, and his early paintings of women were examined. His idea of indifference was seen within the context of the Dandy and his alter ego, Rrose Selavy as a Femme Fatale. His machine paintings are also seen as a part of his idea of detachment and negation of women. Detachment as an intellectual pursuit was probed with his life-long interest in chess. The Large Glass was then seen as not only showing inconographically a negation of women but also as being an intrinsic component of his life and his work.

I decided to simplify the composition of my work in subject matter, color, size and style without destroying its visual impact. Experimentation in surface quality gave variety to the simplified content. My main commitment to the accomplishment of this problem was to avoid complexity in any form. Visual Literacy in Computer Culture: Reading, Writing, and Drawing Logo Turtle Graphics

This study seeks to explore relationships between Logo turtle graphics and visual literacy by addressing two related questions: (a) can traditional visual literacy concepts, as found in the published literature, be synthesized in terms of Logo turtle graphics, and (b) do the literature and "hands-on" experience with turtle graphics indicate that visual competencies are pertinent to graphics-based electronic communications in computer culture? The findings of this research illustrate that Logo turtle graphics is a self-contained model to teach visual literacy skills pertinent to computer culture. This model is drawn from synthesizing published literature and the classroom experience of Logo learners, which is demonstrated through their visual solutions to Logo assignments. A visual analysis and interpretation of the subjects' work concludes that the principles and competencies associated with traditional visual literacy skills manifest during the Logo turtle graphics experience. The subjects of this study demonstrate that visual literacy pertinent to computer culture includes reading, writing, and drawing alphanumerics and pictographic information with linguistic equivalence. The logic for this symbolic metaphor is body-syntonic spatial experience explained in geometric terms. The Logo learner employs computational models for visual ideas and visual-verbal symbols for spatial ideas in the course of doing turtle graphics.
