Spatial Targeting of Agricultural Support Measures: Indicator-Based Assessment of Coverages and Leakages (open access)

Spatial Targeting of Agricultural Support Measures: Indicator-Based Assessment of Coverages and Leakages

This article evaluates the targeting strategy of a national-level program in Mexico that distributed agricultural support based on seven criteria that prioritized poor smallholder farming communities at high risk of cropland failure. The findings highlight the continued lack of financial support for smallholder agriculture in Mexico, despite program rules and priority statements that stress the vulnerability of this sector. The article also illustrates the important role of spatial targeting in better aligning agricultural support payments with stated policy priorities.

The Earps Invade Southern California: Bootlegging Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and the Old Soldiers’ Home

Access: Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Most readers of the Wild West know Wyatt Earp, Virgil Earp, and Morgan Earp for the famous shootout on the streets of Tombstone, Arizona. But few know the later years of the close-knit Earp family, which revolved around patriarch Nicholas Earp, and their last push at a major monetary coup in Los Angeles. By 1900 a newly established Old Soldiers’ Home was in place at Sawtelle (between Santa Monica and Los Angeles), with thousands of veterans earning monthly pensions, but in an environment where alcohol was prohibited. Enter the Earps and their “blind pig” (illicit alcohol sales) scheme. Two of the Earps, Nicholas and son Newton, were enrolled in the Soldiers’ Home, and Newton’s far more famous half-brothers Wyatt and Virgil showed up from time to time, but the star of the operation was older brother James. Booze would flow, the pension money would be “dispersed about,” and jails were sometimes filled, as the Earps and several other men on the make competed for the veterans’ money. We are also reintroduced to Old West figures such as “Gunfighter Surgeon” Dr. George Goodfellow, “Silver Tongued Orator” Thomas Fitch, millionaire George Hearst, detective J.V. Brighton, Lucky Baldwin, and many other well-known westerners …

New approach for identification pHFO networks to predict epilleptogenesis (open access)

New approach for identification pHFO networks to predict epilleptogenesis

Data management plan for the grant, "New approach for identification pHFO networks to predict epilleptogenesis." About 40% of epilepsy patients fail to control seizures after treatment, and currently there is no treatment that can prevent epilepsy. The goal of this study is to perform multi-scale electrophysiological investigations combine with advanced computational algorithm development to understand the characteristics of the pathological brain networks during the latent period of epilepsy. The findings of this project will lead to a better understanding of the network mechanisms of epileptogenesis and suggest novel approaches to prevent the process of epileptogenesis.

Selective Noncatalytic Reduction of NOx Using Ammonium Sulfate (open access)

Selective Noncatalytic Reduction of NOx Using Ammonium Sulfate

Article discusses how ammonium sulfate (AS) is of interest as an additive in stationary combustion plants for the simultaneous control of NOx (through selective noncatalytic reduction, SNCR) and deposition and corrosion (through sulfation of alkali chlorides). The results indicated that sulfur from ammonium sulfate is mainly released as SO3, even though SO2 is detected in increasing concentrations at temperatures above 1000 °C. This is the accepted manuscript version of the published article.

Complexity synchronization: a measure of interaction between the brain, heart and lungs (open access)

Complexity synchronization: a measure of interaction between the brain, heart and lungs

Authors of the article address the measurable consequences of the network effect (NE) on time series generated by different parts of the brain, heart, and lung organ-networks (ONs), which are directly related to their inter-network and intra-network interactions. The authors assert that these same physiologic ONs have been shown to generate crucial event (CE) time series, and herein are shown ,using modified diffusion entropy analysis (MDEA) to have scaling indices with quasiperiodic changes in complexity, as measured by scaling indices, over time.
