Oral History Interview with Myrven H. Cron, November 8, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Myrven Cron. Cron joined the Navy in 1942 and enrolled in Rice University’s V-12 program. After graduating with a degree in chemical engineering, he attended midshipmen’s school at Northwestern University. Upon completion, he was assigned to the USS Chicago (CA-136) as a junior gunnery officer. When he arrived at Tokyo Bay, he was reunited with his brother, who was there as part of Underwater Demolition Team 6. Cron later requested and was granted use of a Jeep so that he could visit Hiroshima. He finished his tour of duty near Shanghai and returned home safely.

Oral History Interview with Jerome Crowley, September 23, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Jerome Crowley. Crowley was born in Cituate, Maine 17 March 1924. He graduated from high school in 1941 and joined the US Navy 17 January 1942. Upon completion of boot camp he was sent to Aviation Machinist Mate School in Jacksonville, Florida where he received six months training on aircraft engines. He then volunteered for PT boats and underwent two months of training in Melville, Rhode Island. Crowley was then assigned to Torpedo Squadron 9 and went to Tobago for additional training. In March 1943 his unit arrived in Tulagi and he was assigned to the engine room aboard PT-156. He participated in the invasion of Munda and the Treasury Islands as well as doing patrols in the Kula Gulf. Crowley comments on the high morale among the crew members.

Oral History Interview with Richard Curts, April 24, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard Curts. Curts joined the Army in September, 1943 and trained in Oklahoma. Then he was assigned to the 252nd Engineer Combat Battalion. He landed in France in September, 1944. His unit built bridges and cleared mines from France to Belgium. He was on the front lines at the Battle of the Bulge. His unit was on its way to the Pacific when the war ended. Curts went home and was discharged in May, 1946.

Oral History Interview with Ruben Clayton Davis, November 13, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Ruben Davis. Davis was born in Texas on 5 July 1926. In 1944 he was inducted into the Navy and sent to San Diego for boot training. Upon completing eight weeks of boot training he was assigned to amphibious training at Coronado Island, California. During training, he covered boat handling, semaphore and Morse code. While in training he developed pneumonia and was hospitalized. Upon recovering, he was assigned to USS LSM-171 as a coxswain. He recalls the ship laying smokescreen during the invasion of Okinawa and being under attack by kamikaze aircraft. He also remembers the ship being in a typhoon in 1945. Following the surrender of Japan the ship went to various islands and picked up and disposed of Japanese weaponry. Davis returned to the United States aboard the USS Wakefield (AP-21) and was discharged in April 1946.

Oral History Interview with Billy Dennard, October 24, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Billy Dennard. Dennard was drafted into the Navy in September, 1944 and trained at San Diego before reporting aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13). He was aboard when a Japanese plane attacked the ship 50 miles off the coast of Japan in March, 1945. Dennard was rescued from below decks and stayed aboard the ship all the way back to New York. Dennard was discharged in June, 1946.

Oral History Interview with Richard Dirks, November 12, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard Dirks. Dirks was drafted into the Navy in February 1944 and trained at San Diego. From there he went to a weather school. Once he got to the Aleutian Islands, he was assigned to a weather station. Because he could type, he was made a yeoman in Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher's Northern Pacific Command headquarters on Adak. He spent the war there but for a brief interlude in Japan during the surrender and was discharged in May 1946. Dirks resumed his education and graduated in 1947.

Oral History Interview with Justo Dumlao, May 3, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Justo Dumlao. Dumlao was born in the Philippines in 1914. By the time the war broke out, he had already trained as a radio operator in the Philippine Scouts. He was stationed at Fort Stotsenburg when the Japanese invaded. Dumlao retreated to Bataan alongside American troops and ultimately surrendered. He made the brutal trek to Camp O’Donnell while suffering from malaria, dysentery, and beriberi. Upon release, his family nursed him back to health. He then rejoined the guerillas and was instrumental in the Raid at Cabanatuan. After the war, Dumlao enlisted in the United States Army and gained citizenship. At his 100th birthday celebration, he was presented with the Bronze Star for his participation in the Great Raid.

Oral History Interview with Charles Dunnam, October 17, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Charles Dunnam. Dunnam was drafted into the Army in July, 1944 and had basic training at Camp Wolters. Upon being sent overseas, Dunnam joined the 126th Infantry Regiment on Leyte. He traveled with them to Luzon in January just after the invasion got started. In May, he was wounded by rifle fire. He returned to his unit and recalls several hundred Japanese soldiers surrendering just after the war ended. He spent some time in Japan before returning to the US and being discharged in August, 1946.

Oral History Interview with Everett Dyer, December 10, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Everett Dyer. Dyer was born in Bristol, Vermont on 23 March 1918 into a family of six children. After receiving his diploma from high school he attended the University of Houston and graduated in 1941. Upon being drafted in 1941, he was sent to Camp Roberts, California for basic training. After completing infantry training he went to Fort Lewis, Washington to join the 41st Infantry Division Headquarters as an aide to General Horace Fuller. In April the division went aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth for a nineteen day voyage to Sydney, Australia. Upon his arrival he was assigned to the headquarters operations staff (G-3) responsible for preparing casualty reports. During January 1943 the division participated in the battle of Buna, Gona on New Guinea and Dyer comments on the high casualties suffered. He recalls making an amphibious landing at Hollandia by lifeboat in April 1944 and being strafed by Japanese planes while on the beach. He also witnessed attacks by Japanese kamikazes on ships in the bay. Dyer was a member of the retinue that greeted General McArthur as he came ashore. While on Biak, he developed typhus, resulting …

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Eddleman. Eddleman joined the Navy in January of 1942. He completed Bugle Master School. He served aboard the USS Texas (BB-35), and participated in the invasions of North Africa, Normandy, Cherbourg, Italy, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Eddleman witnessed numerous battles atop the navigation bridge. He returned to the US in late 1945.

Oral History Interview with Gilbert Esensee, March 25, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Gilbert Esensee. Esensee was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, on 6 August 1925, into a family of eight children. In 1944, he joined the Army and took basic training at Camp Roberts, California. He was then sent to La Havre, France, where he joined the 29th Infantry Division, 175th Infantry Regiment. Esensee was involved in combat action along the Roer River, where he was wounded. He also tells of German soldiers swimming the Elbe River, to avoid capture by Russian troops.
