The couple's careers (in the Air Force and as a corporate lawyer) forced them to stay closeted professionally; they discuss how they developed codes in order to express affection to each other without "outing" themselves.

The couple, who had been together for 19 years when this video was recorded, share stories from their relationship, including the story of how they met on a women's softball team, Between the Sheets. When Hess was diagnosed with breast cancer, the couple struggled to navigate the medical and legal systems because of their unmarried status, given that same-sex couples could not marry in Texas at that time (mid-1960s). The couple, who flew to San Francisco to marry in January 2014, express how much being married means to them.
