Oral History Interview with Leroy Raeber, April 16, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Leroy Raeber. Raeber joined the Navy in October of 1942. He served with the 62nd Naval Mobile Construction Battalion, and on Admiral Chester Nimitz’s maintenance staff. Raeber was stationed on Iwo Jima from 25 February through 1 May 1945, building a seawater conversion tank, filtering salt water to drinking water. He received a discharge in October of 1945.

Oral History Interview with Alton Frost, April 8, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Alton Frost. Frost joined the Navy in September 1942 after finishing high school. He went to flight school and switched to the Marine Corps so he could fly single engine planes. He then was assigned to fly dive bombers in Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 241 (VMSB-241). Frost joined the squadron in the Solomon Islands in time to go to the Philippines. He shares a few anecdotes of his combat flight experiences. When the war ended, Frost elected to serve in the Reserves but was not recalled for the Jorean War. He left the Reserves and resigned his commission.

Oral History Interview with Daniel Henshaw, April 22, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Daniel Henshaw. Henshaw joined the Army Air Forces in March of 1942. He served as a C-47 pilot with the 434th Troop Carrier Group, 19th Bomb Wing. Henshaw was stationed in England, and completed missions over France, including flying combat paratroopers on airborne assaults during the invasion of Normandy. He continued his service after the war ended, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, retiring as a colonel in 1974.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Kenneth Barclay. Barclay joined the Army in February of 1943. He served as a rifleman with the 27th Infantry Division, 165th Infantry Regiment. He deployed to Honolulu, Hawaii in May. Barclay participated in the Battle of Makin in November, the Battle of Saipan in mid-1944, the Battle of Okinawa in April of 1945. He received his discharge in November.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Felix Burrus. Burrus joined the Army Air Forces in August of 1944. He completed Airplane Mechanics School, and served as a B-29 mechanic with the 5th Bomb Group, 313th Bomb Wing. In early 1945, Burrus was assigned to Clark Field in the Philippines, where he worked through the end of the war. He received his discharge in November of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Miles. Miles made a deal with the local draft board in his area that he would join the Army right after his sister was married. When she married in 1945, he joined the Army, trained at Fort Lewis and went to Japan on occupation duty. He was assigned to an engineer unit and constructed facilities in occupied Japan. He returned, was discharged and went on to attend Georgia Tech.

Oral History Interview with P. A. Penley, April 4, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with P.A. Penley. Penley joined the Army in 1942. He studied mechanical engineering at several universities before becoming an infantryman. Penley joined the 66th Infantry Division and was sent to Europe. He mentions a submarine attack on the convoy during the voyage to France that resulted in the loss of over 700 of his fellow soldiers. Penley served as a jeep driver in a weapons company and describes the bitter cold he encountered. He details coming under attack by German artillery. Penley discusses the celebration that occurred when news of the German surrender spread. He participated in the Occupation and was discharged in March of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Paul Evans. Evans joined the Marchant Marine in the summer of 1944. He was assigned as a radio operator on the SS Charles M. Russel. Evans describes life aboard ship and details the ceremony when they crossed the equator. He discusses his role as a loader for a 20mm anti-aircraft gun and coming under attack during the landings on Leyte. Evans also describes receiving an SOS while on watch and how the senders were too far away to help. His next voyage was on the SS Fort Stevenson, which was a tanker. Evans describes a stopover on Tinian and an opportunity to explore the airfield and parked B-29 bombers. He returned to the US in September of 1945 and enlisted in the US Army for three years.

Oral History Interview with Louis Wolfort, April 21, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Louis Wolfort. Wolfort was drafted into the Army in January of 1941. He completed Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky in July of 1942. He was then sent to Camp Funston, Kansas to start the 9th Armored Division. He was a light tank instructor at Camp Funston, then went back to Fort Knox, and provides detail of the equipment he used in training. From there he was sent to the West Coast and shipped out as a replacement officer. He served overseas as a company commander at Headquarters, Southern Islands Area Command under General Robert L. Eichelberger, and provides some detail of that experience. He was discharged in March of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Edward Shackelford, April 27, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Edward Shackelford. Shackelford joined the Army Air Forces in March 1943. He completed basic training in Miami Beach, Florida. From there he went to Fort Collins, Colorado, and had weapons training and learned to be a clerk typist. He then went to Gunter Field, Alabama, and worked with budgets and accounting, before he volunteered to go overseas. He was with the 13th Air Force Headquarters on Palawan. In June 1944 he boarded a ship to New Caledonia where he worked in casual labor then relocated to Guadalcanal where he trained to be a radio operator. From there he went to Bougainville and worked in the DF station where they helped lost Marine aviators find their base. He then transferred to the Philippines to work in a radio station as a clerk typist and he ran the Airmen’s club. In December 1945 he came back to San Francisco and was discharged.
