A Babylonian Reads Genesis in 900 B.C.E.
Lecture given Monday, June 27, 2005 at Abilene Christian University: "Enkidu, a Marduk-worshipping Babylonian, moves to Jerusalem in 900 b.C.E. His Hebrew neighbor gives him an evangelistic tract: "The Book of Genesis." Reading Genesis through Enkidu's eyes, what would have struck him as profoundly revolutionary? Today's readers cannot fully appreciate the nature of Genesis until they read it through ancient-Mesopotamian glasses."

Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Andy Birtwistle's Balloonarticularity 80. This work was inspired by Jules Verne and his novel, "Around the World In 80 Days". This piece plays with the possibility of that book being a futuristic novel, rather than a piece of 19th century literature. In this piece, a Victorian traveler journeys into the future of the present, listening for differences in an increasingly homogeneous world. Beginnings
Access:
Use of this item is restricted to the UNT Community
Recording of Ewan Stefani's Beginnings. The inspiration for this piece is the concept of denial and avoiding conclusions; rather than confronting, the focus here is upon description and observation. The voice guides the audience through a series of false beginnings that lead to another introduction, rather than a meaningful programmatic development. This piece was designed to represent discrete narrative or musical "voices" using speakers in the performance space. The pitched material is based on the first few passages of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas".
