Oral History Interview with Wayne Beery, July 24, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Wayne T. Beery. Beery joined the US Marine Corps in 1943. After completing boot camp at San Diego, he was assigned guard duty at Mare Island Navy Yard. In 1944 he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, 7th Marines on Guadalcanal. He tells of landing on Okinawa 1 April 1945 and comments on the stillness on the beach upon landing. Assigned the battalion headquarters company, he describes his responsibilities for the telephone communications. After the surrender of Japan, he was sent to China. He returned to the United States in 1946 and was discharged.

Incipient Spallation Fracture in Light Metals From 3D X-Ray Tomography, 2D Microscopy, and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The dynamic fracture of ductile metals is known to occur through the nucleation and growth of microscopic voids. As the voids grow, the surrounding metal is plastically deformed to accommodate the change in void volume. In order to gain better insight into void growth, gas gun recovery experiments were used to study incipient spallation fracture in light metals (Al, Cu, V). In addition to in-situ free surface velocity wave-profiles, the recovered samples were first analyzed using 3D X-ray tomography and then sectioned for 2D microscopy. The void size and spatial distribution were determined directly from the X-ray tomography. The single crystal samples show a bimodal distribution of small voids with large (50-100 micron) well separated voids. The plastically damaged region surrounding the large voids is quantified using optical and electron backscattering microscopy. Microhardness measurements indicate this region to be harder than the surrounding metal. Concurrently, a molecular dynamics model of void nucleation and growth at high strain-rate was developed. The model is consistent with experimental observations, e.g. voids nucleate at the weakest points in the metal such as inclusions and grain boundary junctions. Bounds and Estimates for Transport Coefficients of Random and Porous Media with High Contrasts

Bounds on transport coefficients of random polycrystals of laminates are presented, including the well-known Hashin-Shtrikman bounds and some newly formulated bounds involving two formation factors for a two-component porous medium. Some new types of self-consistent estimates are then formulated based on the observed analytical structure both of these bounds and also of earlier self-consistent estimates (of the CPA or coherent potential approximation type). A numerical study is made, assuming first that the internal structure (i.e., the laminated grain structure) is not known, and then that it is known. The purpose of this aspect of the study is to attempt to quantify the differences in the predictions of properties of a system being modeled when such organized internal structure is present in the medium but detailed spatial correlation information may or (more commonly) may not be available. Some methods of estimating formation factors from data are also presented and then applied to a high-contrast fluid-permeability data set. Hashin-Shtrikman bounds are found to be very accurate estimates for low contrast heterogeneous media. But formation factor lower bounds are superior estimates for high contrast situations. The new self-consistent estimators also tend to agree better with data than either the bounds or the CPA …

Seismic Waves in Finely Layered VTI Media: Poroelasticity, Thomsen Parameters, and Fluid Effects on Shear Waves

Layered earth models are well justified by experience, and provide a simple means of studying fairly general behavior of the elastic and poroelastic characteristics of seismic waves in the earth. Thomsen's anisotropy parameters for weak elastic and poroelastic anisotropy are now commonly used in exploration, and can be conveniently expressed in terms of the layer averages of Backus. Since our main interest is usually in the fluids underground, it would be helpful to have a set of general equations relating the Thomsen parameters as directly as possible to the fluid properties. This end can be achieved in a rather straightforward fashion for these layered earth models, and the present paper develops and then discusses these relations. Furthermore, it is found that, although there are five effective shear moduli for any layered VTI medium, one and only one effective shear modulus for the layered system contains all the dependence of pore fluids on the elastic or poroelastic constants that can be observed in vertically polarized shear waves in VTI media. The effects of the pore fluids on this effective shear modulus can be substantial - an increase of shear wave speed on the order of 10% is shown to be possible …

Measurement of Airflow in Residential Furnaces

In order to have a standard for furnaces that includes electricity consumption or for the efficiency of furnace blowers to be determined, it is necessary to determine the airflow of a furnace or furnace blower. This study focused on airflow testing, in order to determine if an existing test method for measuring blower airflow could be used to measure the airflow of a furnace, under conditions seen in actual installations and to collect data and insights into the operating characteristics of various types of furnace blowers, to use in the analysis of the electricity consumption of furnaces. Results of the measured airflow on furnaces with three types of blower and motor combinations are presented in the report. These included: (1) a forward-curved blower wheel with a typical permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor, (2) a forward-curved blower wheel with an electronically-commutated motor (ECM), and (3) a prototype blower, consisting of a backward-inclined blower wheel matched to an ECM motor prototype, which is being developed as an energy-saving alternative to conventional furnace blowers. The testing provided data on power consumption, static and total pressure, and blower speed.

We discuss commissioning work funded through LCLS WBS element 1.5: X-ray Transport Optics and Diagnostics (XTOD.) A short description of the XTOD commissioning diagnostics hardware is followed by a brief discussion of FEL induced damage considerations. The remainder discusses simulation work on the response of the Direct Imager camera to a mix of spontaneous and FEL radiation and a Monte Carlo Calculation of the reflections of the spontaneous radiation in the undulator vacuum tube.

Experimental investigation of high mach number 3D hydrodynamic jets at the National Ignition Facility

The first hydrodynamics experiments were performed on the National Ignition Facility. A supersonic jet was formed via the interaction of a laser driven shock ({approx}40 Mbars) with 2D and 3D density perturbations. The temporal evolution of the jet's spatial scales and ejected mass were measured with point projection x-ray radiography. Measurements of the large-scale features and mass are in good agreement with 2D and 3D numerical simulations. These experiments are the first quantitative measurements of the evolution of 3D supersonic jets and provide insight into their 3D behavior.

LATTICE QCD AT FINITE TEMPERATURE AND DENSITY.

With the operation of the RHIC heavy ion program, the theoretical understanding of QCD at finite temperature and density has become increasingly important. Though QCD at finite temperature has been extensively studied using lattice Monte-Carlo simulations over the past twenty years, most physical questions relevant for RHIC (and future) heavy ion experiments remain open. In lattice QCD at finite temperature and density there have been at least two major advances in recent years. First, for the first time calculations of real time quantities, like meson spectral functions have become available. Second, the lattice study of the QCD phase diagram and equation of state have been extended to finite baryon density by several groups. Both issues were extensively discussed in the course of the workshop. A real highlight was the study of the QCD phase diagram in (T, {mu})-plane by Z. Fodor and S. Katz and the determination of the critical end-point for the physical value of the pion mass. This was the first time such lattice calculations at, the physical pion mass have been performed. Deformation of Single Crystal Molybdenum at High Pressure

Single crystal samples of micron dimensions oriented in the [001] direction were shortened 10 to 40% in uniaxial compression with superposed hydrostatic pressure to begin investigation of how the onset of yielding evolves with pressure. A testing machine based on opposed anvil geometry with precision pneumatic control of the applied force and capability to measure sub micron displacements was developed to produce shape changing deformation at pressure. The experiments extend observations of pressure dependent deformation to {approx}5Gpa at shortening rates of {approx}2*10{sup -4}. Samples have been recovered for post run characterization and analysis to determine if deformation mechanisms are altered by pressure. Experiments under hydrostatic pressure provide insight into the nature of materials under extreme conditions, and also provide a means for altering deformation behavior in a controlled fashion. The approach has a long history demonstrating that pressure enhances ductility in general, and produces enhanced hardening relative to that expected from normal cold work in the BCC metals Mo, Ta and Nb{sup 2}. The pressure hardening is in excess of that predicted from the measured increase in shear modulus at pressure, and therefore is likely due to a dislocation mechanism, such as suppression of kink pair formation or the interaction …

Oral History Interview with Robert Bridge, August 24, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert Bridge. Bridge was inducted into the Army on 10 November 1943. During basic training he volunteered for paratrooper duty, but failed the physical and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne as a glider infantryman. He crossed the Atlantic on a troop carrier and arrived at a camp outside Leicester, England on 24 May 1944. His glider was a Waco CG 4A model. He describes his participation in Operation Market Garden during September 1944. Bridge participated in a glider landing near the city of Grave, Netherlands and secured a bridge over the Waal River. The 82nd Airborne Division retreated to a French army camp in Sissonne following the action in Holland. He describes being involved in the Battle of the Bulge but does not provide details. He recalls his unit made it to Cologne, Germany where they held the west bank of the Rhine River for more than a month. Bridge remembers entering Hamburg, Germany and fighting up the Elbe River where they met up with the Russians. He spent three months on occupation duty in Germany following the war and returned on the RMS Queen Mary arriving …
