Oral History Interview with Charles Allen, October 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Charles Allen. Mr Allen went into the Marine Corps in September 1942, took boot camp in San Diego, and then was stationed in Santa Anna at the lighter-than-air base as a guard. In September 1943, he was sent to Noumea, New Caledonia and from there to New Guinea where he was put in the First Marine Division, HQ Company, 1st Battalion. His first introduction to combat was when they landed on the southern tip of New Britain. Allen provides a good description of the fighting and the conditions on New Britain; they were wet and in the swamps. It took them about four months to go through New Britain. They had a brief respite on Johnson Islands before they landed on Peleliu. Allen talks about shooting their 75mm guns, point-blank at the steel and concrete doors the Japanese had built. He states that Peleliu was real rough. After going to a camp on Pavuvu, they went to Okinawa. He describes the day that Lt Gen Buckner was killed, by a sniper. Oral History Interview with Walter Buczek, August 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Walter Buczek. Buczek joined the Army in 1943 and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. He completed Automotive Transport School, repairing trucks. During his schooling he was assigned as a mechanical instructor. In June of 1945 he traveled to Hawaii, then landed on Ie Shima, Okinawa in July. Buczek served with the 1631st Engineer Construction Battalion. He worked with heavy equipment on road construction and building airfields through the spring of 1946. He returned to the US and was discharged in March of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Eli Escobar, March 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Eli Escobar. Escobar was drafted into the Army in May 1944. When Escobar arrived in France in November, 1944, he joined Company K, 242nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division. In January, 1945, Escobar got captured by German troops near Haguenau. He spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. He was liberated in late April and returned to the US. Escobar was discharged in November, 1945.

Oral History Interview with Louis Glist, October 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Louis Glist. Mr Glist enlisted in the military November 3, 1942; the War Department, Ordnance Section which became a part of the U. S. Army. He didn't really go to boot camp because the ordnance department had specific technical assignments. Glist's first duty assignment was in medium maintenance (through 37mm weapons). Then, they sent him to school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, he came back, took a test and ended up going to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP). He was shipped to Oregon State College where he spent ten months studying to be a mechanical engineer. After that he went back to Aberdeen where he went to OCS, graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant. From there he went to Wilmington, California where he went aboard the General Morton, a troop transport, which sailed on February 8, 1945; going over as a casualty replacement. They were on their way to Calcutta; it took them forty days and nights. He was assigned to the Chinese Combat Command. Use of phosphates to reduce slag penetration in Cr2O3-based refractories

A high-chromium refractory material that provides improved resistance to coal slag penetration is presented. The refractory mixture comprises a blend of chromium oxide, aluminum oxide and phosphates. The refractory mixture may be blended with an aggregate and cured. In addition a phosphorous oxide may be blended with chromium oxide and aluminum oxide and additionally an aggregate. The refractory mixture reduces the rate of coal slag penetration into the surface of the cured refractory.

Oral History Interview with Irving Newton, January 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Irving Newton. Newton joined the Army Air Forces in mid-1941. He completed school for weather forecasting. He served as the forecaster at Marshall Field, Fort Riley, Kansas. In 1943 he was transferred to Hickman Field in Hawaii, and later to Tarawa, Okinawa, the Philippines and Japan.

Oral History Interview with James Ramage, September 9, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with James Ramage. Ramage James D Ramage graduated from the Naval Academy in 1939. In 1943 he joined the USS Enterprise (CV-6), and became executive officer and later commanding officer of Bombing Squadron Ten (United States. Navy. Bombing Squadron 10 (VB-10)), flying the SBD Dauntless dive bomber. He saw his first combat in the Battle of Kwajalein in January 1944, and participated in the attack on Truk in February and landings at Hollandia in April. During the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, he led 29 aircraft from Enterprise in a maximum-range twilight attack against the Japanese fleet, and was personally credited with crippling a Japanese aircraft carrier. Ramage additionally participated in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was promoted to rear admiral in June of 1967, and retired in January of 1976.

DOD Travel Cards: Control Weaknesses Led to Millions in Fraud, Waste, and Improper Payments

Testimony issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "In November 2003, GAO testified on the significant level of improper premium class travel purchased with centrally billed accounts. These findings led to concerns over the Department of Defense's (DOD) overall management of the centrally billed account program. At the request of this Committee, Senator Grassley, and Representative Schakowsky, GAO performed work to determine whether DOD controls were adequate to protect the centrally billed accounts from fraud, waste, and abuse. This testimony focuses on whether DOD (1) paid for airline tickets that it did not use and did not process for refund, (2) improperly reimbursed travelers for the cost of airline tickets paid for with centrally billed accounts, and (3) adequately secured access to centrally billed accounts against improper and fraudulent use. This testimony also addresses the internal control breakdowns that led to instances of fraud, waste, and abuse and DOD's corrective actions. In two companion reports issued today, DOD concurred with the 31 recommendations GAO made-- including moving to a well- managed individually billed account program--to improve the management of unused tickets, recover the value of outstanding unused tickets, prevent and detect improper payments, reduce the risk …
