Semi no koe

Recording of Manuel Rocha Iturbide's Semi no koe. This is a work for flute and tape and was conceived and almost entirely produced in Tokyo, Japan. The sounds in the piece were inspired by the birth of cicadas as well as the complexity of nature as a whole. This work was commissioned by flautist, Alejandro Escuer, and premiered at the "Festival Internacional de Arte Sonoro" in Mexico City. The composer structured this piece with the same formula as a Haiku, and discovered that many Haiku's and poems written in Japan reference the sounds of insects and other animals.

Contr'gris

Recording of Michel Karsky's Contr'gris. This work was created for the Autumn Music Festival in Moscow and includes spoken Japanese and French text. The word "grisaille" is repeated several times and this composition plays on the notion of "grisaille". The title was recommended to the composer by a Russian musicologist who emphasized the importance of an accent when speaking it.

Red Junction

Recording of René Uijlenhoet's Red Junction. This is a work for four or two audio tracks and was commissioned by the VPRO for the VPRO/NPS program Supplement. The composer created this work to show that the instrument, ARP, had been created long before the time of "mass production" in sound. With the ARP, the composer was able to create a naturally untamed and percussive sound world.

Pneumon

Recording of Ioannis Kalantzis' Pneumon. This is a work for tape that was made primarily with the sound of ship masts being shacked by the wind, recorded at the port of Lavrion out of Athens. The composers intention was to restore these sounds into something close to natural living voices and respiration to create a "natural, environmental lung". The title was derived from the Greek word "Pneumon" which means air.

Recording of Mario Verandi's Je ne suis pas d'ici, je suis de passage. This work was commissioned by Césaré Studio de Creation Reims and premiered at the Passage Subé, Reims, France. This piece consists of recordings of passerby's answering the question "où se trouve le passage subé?" and explores issues such as orientation and disorientation. The composer also wrote this to encourage the citizens of Reims to experience their own city from a different perspective.

LongGong

Recording of Hubert Howe's LongGong. This work is based on the sound preset of the same name on the Yamaha DX7-II synthesizer and all materials in this recording were created from this sound. The composer states it is a personal homage to this sound and includes no traditional scale or rhythmic values. This piece is based on a series of interlocking arrays that produce a cycle that exhausts all of the possible combinations in which a particular collection of tones can be generated.

Gems

Recording of Charles Norman Mason's Gems. This work consists of 7 movements: 1. Rhodochrosite, 2. Malachite, 3. Amber, 4. Diamond, 5. Coral, 6. Turquoise, 7. Tolbachite. The composer attempted to create a collection of movements that do not lead to one another, but instead relate to each other. He used the molecular structure of each gem as a guide when it came to the compositions and in that sense various movements share similar sounds while maintaining their individuality.

L'Itinéraire des Résonances
