Synthesis and Characterization of Cluster-Derived Supported Bimetallic Catalysts (open access)

Synthesis and Characterization of Cluster-Derived Supported Bimetallic Catalysts

New procedures have been developed for synthesizing di- and tri-metallic cluster complexes. The chemical properties of the new complexes have been investigated, particularly toward the activation of molecular hydrogen. These complexes were then converted into bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles on silica and alumina supports. These nanoparticles were characterized by electron microscopy and were then tested for their ability to produce catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons and for the preferential oxidation of CO in the presence of hydrogen. The bi- and tri-metallic nanoparticles exhibited far superior activity and selectivity as hydrogenation catalysts when compared to the individual metallic components. It was found that the addition of tin greatly improved the selectivity of the catalysts for the hydrogenation of polyolefins. The addition of iron improves the catalysts for the selective oxidation of CO by platinum in the presence of hydrogen. The observations should lead to the development of lower cost routes to molecules that can be used to produce polymers and plastics for use by the general public and for procedures to purify hydrogen for use as an alternative energy in the hydrogen economy of the future.

Osmose Experiment Representativity Studies. (open access)

Osmose Experiment Representativity Studies.

The OSMOSE program aims at improving the neutronic predictions of advanced nuclear fuels through measurements in the MINERVE facility at the CEA-Cadarache (France) on samples containing the following separated actinides: Th-232, U-233, U-234, U-235, U-236, U-238, Np-237, Pu-238, Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu-241, Pu-242, Am-241, Am-243, Cm-244 and Cm-245. The goal of the experimental measurements is to produce a database of reactivity-worth measurements in different neutron spectra for the separated heavy nuclides. This database can then be used as a benchmark for integral reactivity-worth measurements to verify and validate reactor analysis codes and integral cross-section values for the isotopes tested. In particular, the OSMOSE experimental program will produce very accurate sample reactivity-worth measurements for a series of actinides in various spectra, from very thermalized to very fast. The objective of the analytical program is to make use of the experimental data to establish deficiencies in the basic nuclear data libraries, identify their origins, and provide guidelines for nuclear data improvements in coordination with international programs. To achieve the proposed goals, seven different neutron spectra can be created in the MINERVE facility: UO2 dissolved in water (representative of over-moderated LWR systems), UO2 matrix in water (representative of LWRs), a mixed oxide fuel matrix, …

Impact of the implementation of MPI point-to-point communications on the performance of two general sparse solvers (open access)

Impact of the implementation of MPI point-to-point communications on the performance of two general sparse solvers

We examine the mechanics of the send and receive mechanism of MPI and in particular how we can implement message passing in a robust way so that our performance is not significantly affected by changes to the MPI system. This leads us to using the Isend/Irecv protocol which will entail sometimes significant algorithmic changes. We discuss this within the context of two different algorithms for sparse Gaussian elimination that we have parallelized. One is a multifrontal solver called MUMPS, the other is a supernodal solver called SuperLU. Both algorithms are difficult to parallelize on distributed memory machines. Our initial strategies were based on simple MPI point-to-point communication primitives. With such approaches, the parallel performance of both codes are very sensitive to the MPI implementation, the way MPI internal buffers are used in particular. We then modified our codes to use more sophisticated nonblocking versions of MPI communication. This significantly improved the performance robustness (independent of the MPI buffering mechanism) and scalability, but at the cost of increased code complexity.

Color transparency and pion valence quark distributions from di-jet events in Fermilab E791 (open access)

Color transparency and pion valence quark distributions from di-jet events in Fermilab E791

Diffractive, exclusive di-jet events produced by 500 GeV/c {pi}{sup {minus}} scattered off nuclei were used to measure their A-dependence, and to make the first direct measurement of the valence-quark momentum distribution in pions. Data on the latter are compared to two limiting predictions for the pion light-cone wave-function. The results show that the asymptotic wave-function of perturbative QCD describes the data well for Q{sup 2} of 10 GeV{sup 2} and above. The measured A-dependence is consistent with observation of point-like configurations in the pion and color-transparency calculations.

Neutrino masses at v3/2 (open access)

Neutrino masses at v3/2

Theories in which neutrino masses are generated by a conventional see-saw mechanism generically yield masses which are O(v{sup 2}) in units where M{sub Pl} = 1, which is naively too small to explain the results from SuperKamiokande. In supersymmetric theories with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking, the fundamental small parameter is not v/M{sub Pl}, but m{sub I}/M{sub Pl}, where m{sub I} is the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector. We note that m{sub I}{sup 3}/M{sub Pl}{sup 2} is only slightly too large to explain SuperKamiokande, and present two models that achieve neutrino masses at this order in m{sub I}, one of which has an additional suppression {lambda}{sub {tau}}{sup 2}, while the other has additional suppression arising from a loop factor. The latter model shares a great deal of phenomenology with a class of models previously explored, including the possibility of viable sneutrino dark matter.

Power Corrections in Charmless Nonleptonic B Decays: Annihilationis Factorizable and Real (open access)

Power Corrections in Charmless Nonleptonic B Decays: Annihilationis Factorizable and Real

We classify {Lambda}{sub QCD}/m{sub b} power corrections to nonleptonic B {yields} M{sub 1}M{sub 2} decays, where M{sub 1,2} are charmless non-isosinglet mesons. Using recent developments in soft-collinear effective theory, we prove that the leading contributions to annihilation amplitudes of order {alpha}{sub s}(m{sub b}) {Lambda}{sub QCD}/m{sub b} are real. The leading annihilation amplitudes depend on twist-2 and the twist-3 three parton distributions. A complex nonperturbative parameter from annihilation first appears at {Omega}[{alpha}{sub s}{sup 2}({radical}{Lambda}m{sub b}){Lambda}{sub QCD}/m{sub b}]. 'Chirally enhanced' contributions are also factorizable and real at lowest order. Thus, incalculable strong phases are suppressed in annihilation amplitudes, unless the {alpha}{sub s}({radical}{Lambda}m{sub b}) expansion breaks down. Modeling the distribution functions, we find that (11 {+-} 9)% and (15 {+-} 11)% of the absolute values of the measured {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} K{sup -}{pi}{sup +} and B{sup -} {yields} K{sup -}K{sup 0} penguin amplitudes come from annihilation. This is consistent with the expected size of power corrections.

SPIN DEPENDENCE IN ELASTIC SCATTERING IN THE CNI REGION. (open access)

SPIN DEPENDENCE IN ELASTIC SCATTERING IN THE CNI REGION.

The interference of the electromagnetic spin-flip amplitude with a hadronic spin-nonflip amplitude in the elastic scattering of hadrons leads to significant spin dependencies at very low 4-momentum transfer t (0.001 < |t| < 0.01 (GeV/c){sup 2}). This kinematical region is known as the Coulomb Nuclear Interference (CNI) region. First results on spin effects in polarized proton-proton elastic scattering in the CNI region at 100 GeV from the 2004 polarized proton run at RHIC are presented. Preliminary results on A{sub N} in the elastic scattering of polarized protons off a carbon target over a wide energy range from 4 GeV to 100 GeV from AGS and RHIC are presented as well. These results allow us to further investigate the spin dependence in elastic scattering and the mechanisms at work.
