The United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR) comprise a human tissue research program studying the deposition, biokinetics and dosimetry of the actinide elements in humans with the primary goals of providing data fundamental to the verification, refinement, or future development of radiation protection standards for these and other radionuclides, and of determining possible bioeffects on both a macro and subcellular level attributable to exposure to the actinides. This report covers USTUR activities during the year from February 2000 through January 2001.

United States Wind Energy Growth and Policy Framework: Preprint

Wind is the fastest growing source for electricity in the United States. During 2001, U.S. wind power plant installations are expected to increase by 1,850 megawatts (MW), resulting in a total installed capacity of about 4,400 MW. The market expansion is supported by a variety of Federal and state incentives in the form of production tax credits, renewable energy production incentives, renewable energy portfolio standards, and others. New mechanisms include green power offerings, green tags, and government power purchases. Deregulation of the electric power industry is continuing. In some cases this is allowing higher electricity rates that may increase the rate of wind plant development. Power shortages, natural gas price increases, and enforcement of clean air laws are increasingly important wind market drivers in some regions. Continuing research and technology development has reduced wind energy costs dramatically to less than $0.04/kWh for large projects at sites with ave rage wind speeds higher than 7.0 m/s, making wind the least-cost option in some power markets. The recently published National Energy Policy contains recommendations to increase wind energy development and improve the power transmission system.

UTILIZATION OF LIGHTWEIGHT MATERIALS MADE FROM COAL GASIFICATION SLAGS

The objective of the project entitled ''Utilization of Lightweight Materials Made from Coal Gasification Slags'' was to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of manufacturing low-unit-weight products from coal gasification slags which can be used as substitutes for conventional lightweight and ultra-lightweight aggregates. In Phase I, the technology developed by Praxis to produce lightweight aggregates from slag (termed SLA) was applied to produce a large batch (10 tons) of expanded slag using pilot direct-fired rotary kilns and a fluidized bed calciner. The expanded products were characterized using basic characterization and application-oriented tests. Phase II involved the demonstration and evaluation of the use of expanded slag aggregates to produce a number of end-use applications including lightweight roof tiles, lightweight precast products (e.g., masonry blocks), structural concrete, insulating concrete, loose fill insulation, and as a substitute for expanded perlite and vermiculite in horticultural applications. Prototypes of these end-use applications were made and tested with the assistance of commercial manufacturers. Finally, the economics of expanded slag production was determined and compared with the alternative of slag disposal. Production of value-added products from SLA has a significant potential to enhance the overall gasification process economics, especially when the avoided costs of disposal are considered.

UTSI/CFFF MHD PROGRAM COMPLETION AND RELATED ACTIVITY (open access)

UTSI/CFFF MHD PROGRAM COMPLETION AND RELATED ACTIVITY

Maintenance work on the DOE CFFF facility and other related government property is no longer authorized under this contract in accordance with the DOE-UT Settlement Agreement. Environmental remediation preservation of the facility continued. Government property has been transferred to UTSI as owner which frees up many items for proper disposal. Actions are underway to dispose of other wastes, and control pests and water at the DOE CFFF.

Wind Farm Power Fluctuations, Ancillary Services, and System Operating Impact Analysis Activities in the United States: Preprint

With ever increasing penetration of wind capacity and growing interest in wind power by electric utilities and other power providers, questions about the impacts and costs associated with maintaining a stable grid is receiving lots of attention. These issues are important, both in competitive and regulated monopoly markets.To evaluate the range of ancillary service impact of wind power plants, wind power plant output fluctuations on the order of seconds to minutes must be known. However, the data required for a credible analysis has not been widely available. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), through its own efforts, and in conjunction with a wide group of stakeholders including other national labs, consultants, developers, utilities, and the non-profit Utility Wind Interest Group, has initiated measurement and analysis activities. The efforts are ongoing. While final system-cost results are not available, this paper will describe the progress to date and present typical results and statistical analysis. In addition, methods will be explained with the aim of soliciting feedback from others looking at similar issues worldwide.
